I totally understand! I'd check some public forums, like vanlife groups on Facebook, to see if you can tag along with others coming down. There are people crossing all the time!

Be careful, as the state department recently added many cities in Mexico to the do not travel list due to cartel activity aimed at Americans. Please be safe. We recently went to Zihuatanejo and that is on the list.
