Snow Dump Site on Middle of The Summer | Still Plenty of Snow Left!

We did an exploration trip to our local snow dump site on the hottest time of the year. Can you escape the heat to the glacier or is it just as hot there?

We hoped that there would be little bit colder on the snow dump to escape the heat and don't sweat while filming :D Here is latest weather forecast to Tampere and it looks like we are going to sweat quite a lot for a while :D www.foreca.fi/Finland/Tampere/10vrk

I presume all the sand is from them "gritting" the roads during winter? and as the snow melted the sand formed a layer over the top insulating the rest of the snow? Also Tampere is a lovely place, I should have moved there long ago.

Yeah! This summer has been really hot here in Sweden too (but I like it). I think the main reason it doesn't melt, is the thick layer of dirt and sand that forms on top of the huge pile of snow, as the first part of it melts away. That does a lot when it comes to insulate the snow from the hot air and sun light from above and makes it melt slower and slower.

At least one of the snow dumps in our city (at about 53 degrees N) still has a a deep mountain of grit covered snow. Sometimes it lasts until September.. The sand and rock chips do an annoying job of insulating the pile. :) At least we get to screen and re-use the girt, as the snow dump is on the same giant lot as the concrete and asphalt recycling yard, where they make aggregate for fixing the roads.

Herbert Susmann Yes you're mostly right though some northern parts of the country actually have permafrost soil. Finnish winters usually make damage to the roads as the frozen soil starts melting during spring. But yes, the soil isn't that thick and underneath the bedrock is rising a couple of centimeters or so each year as it recovers from the weight of the ice age glacier.

This is only 3 years late, but here in Wisconsin, by Lake Michigan we have just revived an old festival, Snowfest in Two Rivers. Quote: The origins of Snowfest begin when a group of workers in the city uncovered a four-by-ten-foot mound of snow, in the middle of summer, no less. Since then, the city has used this historic moment as a reason to celebrate. Thus, July 24, 1937, kicked off the very first Snowfest. In fact, back in the 40s, 50s, and 60s, the town would crown a Snow Queen. I remember during the parade city workers would throw snow out of the back of a dump truck. We had at the time wood working plants that would dump the saw dust over the snow piles to keep the snow until July's parade. Good times!

Here in Ottawa, Canada, we are at about the same latitude, so our weather is similar. It can be -30C to -40C in the winter, and 30C to 40C in the summer (which is much shorter than the winter). We also have snow dumps, and the snow stays there for the summer as well (I haven't been that close to it, but I have a good view from my office at work). This was really fun to watch, I've always wanted to dig in it in the summer.

Many years ago the City of Chicago had a problem with many heavy snow falls. They put snow everywhere. In Lake Michigan, the Chicago River, in parks and still there was too much. Then somebody had a great idea. They filled an empty coal train, these trains are big, like a hundred cars and sent it to Florida so the kids there could play in the snow!

If you get lots of rain and warm weather for the remainder of the summer the pile will get smaller but wont disappear. If you just get the heat, the layer of sand will insulate the snow and it will not get much smaller. The more snow that melts, the more sand is produced on the top which gives the show more insulation, keeping it colder below. Rain will penetrate the insulation and cause the snow below to melt.

Yes it's still insanely hot and dry. In Germany we again had 30°C around 20th of September and still no reasonable rainfall since july. And also no reasonable snow dump anywhere ! xD

You could start the time lapse now, then you will have a full year by next summer

That is awesome. We have the same things here in Canada in the cities, they have to remove the snow the same way because in the cities there is not enough room. But in my town we have ample room since I live in a farming community.

Since snowpile is taken from all local roads it is probably concentrating precious metals like platinum from catalytic converters very much and you could pan for them in the runoff like cody did with his street sweepings.

We had snow dump sites in Michigan where I grew up. It wouldn't melt completely during the summer so they would alternate sites every year. That way the snow had 2 summers to melt.

You should take a foundry up there and hear a big steel rod up really hot and put it on the snow and see how far down it melts

"You will not probably want to eat this snow, or, you know, swim in it." Good to know.

When I was a kid, the snow dump sites in spring were good places for finding empty cans and bottles, money and other stuff.

Try using a spade shovel or rounded shovel. It'll get a deeper hole and it'll be easier. Great video though!
