We diagnose and repair a no start issue on a Bolens snowblower that is making a popping noise when pulled.
We go through the full diagnosis process and show a quick and easy way to repair this common issue.
The problem ends up being a stuck intake valve that is causing the unit not to run. These like to snap, crackle, backfire or pop badly when this is the case.
Always check the oil level before starting. Sometimes fuel can be mixed into the crankcase causing a similar issue and symptoms
This is an MTD powermore engine used on almost all MTD Pro units, Cub Cadet, Craftsman, Yard Machines, Bolens, White Outdoor, Troy Bilt, Yard Man and many different private label brands
They put these on 123cc, 179cc and 208cc models of these units

    Excellent and very well-done video, thank you!!! After checking spark and removing/inspecting the carb bowl, float, & jet, I suspected a stuck valve. Your video confirmed this and clearly showed the technique to diagnose and repair. My 2016 Cub Cadet 2X 26HP blower with a 243cc MTD 375-SU engine had a different design (seemed like an improved design) of the rocker arm and clearance adjustment , but the same basic idea. My exhaust valve was stuck. Also, you provided very good background info.

    @@IndRepair I have a question about a snow blower repair. I have a cub cadet 528 swe with a briggs and stratton 1350 snow series. The engine hydro locked, I wanted to know if that engine is worth rebuilding?. I have not disassembled the case to examine the extent of damage yet.

    Man, what a help this video was. I pulled the cover and on pushrod was popped out of the rocker arm seat. Didn't look bent, so I got it back in place and ran it for a few seconds with cover off, seems smooth, and everything seems fine now. Could a backfire when I shut it down the previous time have caused the pushrod to pop out of place? Thanks so much, keep up the good work!

    Many things can cause this but likely a little bit of rust on the valve guides or piece of debris kept the valve stuck for a moment then was able to pop back out. I would lube them up well and run it. Thanks for watching!

    The hose coming out of the valve cover, you just stuck it in toward the general direction of the carb. Mine has a plastic nipple on carb cover to accept that hose and the oil fumes go directly back into the carb. Thanks for the, how to, valve adjustments.

  • @IndRepair

    There is a tab there on the intake, it just slides right on. I did make sure it was on afterwards but this one slid on really easy almost like it didn't go on the nipple. Thanks for watching!

    Learning a lot from you videos. Question, how can you tell the exhaust valve from the intake? Size or location etc.

  • @IndRepair

    @IndRepair

    5 ай бұрын

    Many times on these small engines you will see the exhaust come into the head and the valve closest (right on top) to the exhaust is the exhaust valve. The same goes for looking at the tube going into the head, you can usually see the stem of the valve if looking straight in

    Hope mine is that easy a fix, 1 year old blower with maybe 2-3 hours on it and sat for a year. Sounds like pops throughthe intake. Of course a week before snow predicted it didnt want to start. Gotta get in habit of running machines for a bit during their off seasons.

I think what was especially good was the close up views of the rocker arm Assembly and how he loosened up the stuck valve. Thanks for a great video. If it's Popping and backfiring that means the keyway under the flywheel is brocken and the timing is off.

    Great video! Why are those valve stems seized up already? Exacting tolerances and specifications?

  • @IndRepair

    @IndRepair

    Жыл бұрын

    They are tight tolerances but snowblowers see a lot of moisture and this many times gathers in different places. It doesn't take much moisture to make a tiny spot of rust and keep the valve from moving. Thank you for watching!

  • @thewolfman61

    @thewolfman61

    I think also since they dont run air filter on snowblowers the intake vales sees more moisture than normal. Especially if mixed with salt. Hope thats the problem with my 1 year old cubcadet

    Great video, particularly detailed step by step diagnose. I have One of the Yard Machine snow blower shown in your video, model 31AS6BEE516. When I cleaned its carburetor, I damaged the O ring of the idle jet. As you mentioned in one of your videos, it causes surge. I wonder if you know where I can find replacements, or any suggestions other than replace the whole carburetor. TIA.

    Any suggestions - buy an aftermarket carburetor, an OEM one, or just leave it? Is there any potential issue if I run my snowblower without O ring on the idle jet? Btw. I watched your videos on the quality of aftermarket and oem parts.

    Replace the intake gaskets and carburetor with an aftermarket one and flush fuel tank in my opinion. You will not regret it! Shouldn't take more than 1-2 pulls...make sure you are not over priming

  • @IndRepair

    @IndRepair

    It sounds like you probably have an issue with the valves not seating properly or fuel mixed with the oil. Check the oil level first and make sure the cylinder is not full of fuel. If not then check/adjust the valves

    I have a craftsman that wont start, was sitting for years, drained gas, cleaned carb and wont start. If i spray carb cleaner in it it starts and dies withing seconds, think this could be a stuck valve?

  • @IndRepair

    @IndRepair

    Жыл бұрын

    Definitely not a valve issue on this one. Either the black plastic adapter behind carb is broken, gaskets between carb and adapter are bad, gaskets between adapter and block are bad, carburetor is not getting fuel or the fuel is not good. How dirty was the carburetor? Open drain bolt on bottom and make sure there is fuel in the carb is where I would start.
