    Aof1's achievement with the creation of supers can be broken down to: the invention of meter; an idea of meter management (but different from what later games would do); the idea that supers have to be flashy and strong looking; the "Ranbu" super idea: the char charges foward, does a barrage of strikers and then finishes with a simple attack (probably 70% of all Kof supers must be this way); the distinction between "super" (strong move that costs a lot of meter) and "desperation move", i.e the low-hp only move, that is the standard for SS and the early FFs, and became gradually a big deal in the genre (though this might not be so flattering for hardcore fans) because they are in a way the first comeback mechanic (note: Kof distorted the "Dm" meaning so ignore this point); the idea of designing different types of supers: like "automatic" ones, and the "hit trigger" ones, which only happen if the first hit connect, which then will trigger a whole animation - this is a pretty big deal, because it was invented by this game, Capcom wasnt a fan of it and used little in the 90s, but nowadays that's the rule for almost all fg's, including SF, especially the 3d fg's. All this was given to the fg genre by the very first game with supers. This might be one of the important 90's fg's that aged the worst, but this package of contributions is definitely impressive. And that was only one topic: supers.

    Interesting to see the ideas of commands they came with, for this original concept. Especially Ryuko Ranbu. That was a year before Snk set their minds clearly with the use of complex commands like qcf,hcb. Another interesting detail is that their very first commands for supers revealed their thing for double button presses, specifically a punch and kick. A very Snk trait that lasted until the mid 90s in Kof, the late 90s in FF and forever in SS.

    Art of Fighting is known by many to be the first game to have to implement a true Super Special Move, as it was released before FATAL FURY 2. In fact, in your last SNK showcase, FATAL FURY SPECIAL, Ryo Sakazaki was shown as a secret character, which made that game, one of the very first crossover. It is older than Fighting Vipers, Super Smash Bros., SoulCalibur II, any of them. ...It's what I heard anyway.

So their moronic opinions and tastes matter a lot. I'm from a south american country and AOF has almost none of the bad image it has in the u.s. AOF chars are super popular and respected. And im talking about Ryo and Robert in particular - the generally least respected ones among the murican community because of the "SF clone" stigma. I'm pointing out this fact just to show what is a difference of perception between two gamer cultures. There are places with a huge appreciation for the "blonde Ryu clone that is mocked by Dan" outside of the u.s. (where there isnt even a Snk fg culture to begin with).

I can't seem to find that move being done anywhere, but I remember it very well from the arcade and my childhood. it was a very well-kept secret that only a few knew! if anyone knows what I'm talking about and can link to a video showing that move - please comment and link

  • @carlosaugusto9821
    @carlosaugusto98213 жыл бұрын

    The game was very raw and packed with too many innovations, that the devs didnt have a clear idea of how to manage and lead them. Typical of some kind of eccentric inventions. But i guess those devs were super creative but just without the "developer genius" of Nishitani, who made SF2. He also was filled with new ideas not made before, so without external references as well, but he got a lot of stuff right. The AOF devs invented supers in fg's - such a huge deal, which certainly didnt seem so when it was made - but apparently they had an original concept of "the hero's special power". So it's their specialty, as the main chars. Only in FF2 the company took the idea further and made it an universal mechanic. And the Snes port of Aof1 benefitted from that evolved concept, so the other chars all gained their supers. Kinda funny, that such limited game ended up with this important bonus lacking in the original.

    True, but AoF3 made a pretty big step in gameplay style and quality compared to 1. And that deserves some appreciation at least for being just the 3rd game of the series and taking only 3 years to evolve that way from the first game. That's the time span of the whole run of SF2 updates... Now how long and how many releases it took to deliver a sufficiently robust evolution of the SF system from SF1?

    AOF and FF were saved (either one in its own way) from irrelevance by Kof, in a similar sense that dead or just smaller Nintendo franchises are saved from irrelevance by SB. And of course the even older franchises like Athena, that was already less popular by the mid 90s, around the debut of Kof. AOF was short lived and died by the mid 90s, and FF died in the late 90s, but anyway both would be irrelevant in the 00s if it wasnt for Kof.

    To be totally fair, it really wasnt great, but that was the norm for Snes ports of arcade fg's (pretty much the only exceptions were some MK ports). Even Sf2 ports were very compressed, and Sf2 was a very basic fg technically compared to the early Snk fg's. So naturally those ports in the Snes would look much worse to the Neogeo originals. But i wouldnt say they were totally bad. There was a notable effort put in the AOF1 ost for example. And the addition of supers for all chars, not present in the original.
