SNES Video Output Explained

Ойындар

The Super Nintendo (and Super Famicom) had many motherboard revisions, each outputting different video quality. This video aims to clear up many misconceptions about when that quality difference matters, as well as showcase some mods to make ALL revisions output perfect RGB video!

It's funny to see my mod on KZread. 😊 The glitches are outside the image area, so it is really easy to mask these out. Also it does not disable composite and S-video, it is just not activated here. I still hope someone will make an HDMI mod out of it.

It's cool that there's a new mod for the 2-chips, but I doubt it will be a long lasting solution. Those GPU's have such a high fail rate that it almost doesn't make sense to mod them anymore. I set my 2-chip aside after the red output started to fail, and bought a fixer upper SNES Jr. for playing.

@@rentoptional1524 I have to disagree. Though it is far from definite thing, it happens far more than folks think. I would not say that it's as bad as, "just a matter of time", but including myself I run into guys all the time that have had graphical issues with their SNES. I think it creates enough concern that people aught to think hard about modding something with obvious failure points.

@@Mampersand as far as I am aware all 3-chip model are susceptible to PPU 1 and 2 failing outright. PPU 1 I believe handles sprites and and backgrounds, while PPU 2 handles color encoding. Both are custom chips. So if failure occurs there are no off the shelf solutions. Sadly, salvaged chips are the ONLY solution, besides finding 1-chip units, which are limited to later models, and the redesigned Jr. models. Can't remember the serial number on those later models but maybe that's the one you were referring to. All 3-chip models use an identical chip set, which makes salvage easy enough, but that of course mean a salvage unit will be destroyed to save another. I know I using different reference terms, so I hope this wasn't confusing. By 3-chip I am referring to CPU, PPU1, and PPU2. When referring to 2-chip it is in reference to the same model as 3-chip, just that the 2 chips are in reference to PPU1, and PPU2. Also, I guess I also used the term GPU...sorry about that. I was referring to the PPUs.

I kind of want to get this installed for my old SNES even if I have a 1-Chip bypass installed. The video quality isn’t 100% equivalent to the modded 1-Chip, but the fact that some games have issues on a 1-Chip, this mod debatably makes for the best way to play SNES games on real hardware.

One really important thing for people to know: The 1CHIP revisions (including the SNS-101) have compatibility problems with some games. Usually it's just some visual artifacts but notably Super Turrican is totally unplayable, as the sound will be completely messed up, and will get gradually worse until the game just outright crashes.

  • @swungsolid

@@swungsolid Super Turrican came out in 1993, while the 1-CHIP model systems arrived somewhere in '95. Shipping a patched version of a 2 year old game, especially when Super Turrican 2 was already on its way, wasn't really worth it by then.

2:35 while this is the _clearest_ way to see the board revision, you can also always tell from the marking above the cart slot, which is nice because you can see that without having to remove as many screws. I have a short on my channel about this, but in brief: If it's missing it's an SHVC-CPU-01 (but the presence of the SHVC-SOUND module or its connector is an easier tell). If it says "SNSxx" it's a GPM-xx, otherwise it will say basically the same as the main revision marking (RGB01, 1CHIP03 etc). (I haven't seen _every_ board rev of the SNES so if I'm wrong and there are other exceptions here please let me know)

A note on "reverse low-pass filtering": I showed the OSSC example at the end of this video, but forgot to include RetroTINK 5x footage. I've added comparison shots to the main post: www.retrorgb.com/snes-video-output-explained.html I think this should clarify what to expect: A sharper output, but the noise gets highlighted even MORE ;/ That said, turning the feature all the way up and adding CRT emulation works really well! I'd still recommend the Voultar bypass, but if you already own a RT5x, the feature is already built in, so why not try?

@RetroRGB It's also a nice solution for the 1chip specific issues in some games too, because there also a setting to help fix those. Basically makes a stock 1chip nearly perfect as long as you don't mind using the SD2SNES/FXPAK for everything over original cartridges. I'm blessed that my first SNES I got back in the day was this 1chip one. My mom does real estate, and she found it in a house that was foreclosed on that she was helping clean out. It was super dirty, but I cleaned it up, and it's been a champ all these years. I swapped the shell to a PAL one not too long ago, and now it's my perfect SNES. 👌

I’ve been lucky enough to find a couple 1chips and jrs when collecting games was a much cheaper prospect. The Jr only really needed the Voultar bypass plus C11 fix to look great, though I find it has at least one more graphical glitch that the 1CHIP doesn’t. In Earthbound’s attract mode, little pixels flicker around the screen whenever the screen transitions to black. This doesn’t happen on my 1CHIPs, but it does happen on both my Jrs, modded and stock. I’ve found the 1CHIP needs a little more work in my experience. A 7805S helps reduce the vertical line, but in my experience it caused jailbars unless I also added the recommended 22uf capacitor. Basically, it’s an all or nothing proposition. I’m definitely interested in a 2 CHIP mod, but I will likely hold off a bit in case Voultar is able to refine it even more once he gets an even larger sample size via mod installs.

I guess if you absolutely need to retain encoded video signals, you could always get an external device like Axunworks' RGB2YC. It's very expensive, but does do an excellent job at encoding s-video from RGB (though not so much for composite). Might not be worth it for one system, but it is probably the best alternative for a 3BP Genesis or 2 Chip Bypassed SNES.

i personally dont understand why someone doesnt use the ext port and a cart attachment to make an attachment/ graphics card that has an hdmi and rgb component output. i have been thinking about it for a while. i know others have made linux based attachments before for the ext port on the snes. i know this wouldnt do anything for the snes junior but it would help with the 2 chip and 1 chip revisions. also give the ext port a use other than just in japan which isnt even of use anymore since stellview satellite services haven't been in use since the early 2000's

The problem with modding is finding someone to do it. The US might have tons of modders around but the UK does not and if you find one they are backed up till 2025. Also how common are the boards you install? Is it one of those that you have to pay $200 on ebay and always out of stock at online stores? I have 2 SFC's in my collection. I could use one as standard and have the other modded.

Cutting cost is why the nessecary components are not there on the Snes jr. Lets say that there are 1 million snes jr units sold and say it cost 10 cents for components for each board. 10 cents per board would add $100k to the cost of making those units. It makes complete sense to cut every non-essential component when making a revision to save on cost, especially when, at the time, almost nobody was using RGB in North America on the snes. On top of that, the Snes Jr was a budget option released after the N64 had already launched. Of course 10 cents isnt much for us individually, but for a manufacturing budget for each unit, it makes a difference.

This is word-for-word what I say when people ask why there's components in the RGB lines of the SNES SCART cable, instead of on the motherboard. But this was the late 90's and a LOT more people had S-Video TV's. Context is key here.

@RetroRGB well, the context of s video being common is maybe your perspective, but from someone who grew up in a low income household, I didn't even know what s video was because none of our tvs had it. I played on RF and didn't know any better. This console was made for people who couldn't afford the new consoles, and that usually meant they didn't have the newest TVs either.

They're created for people playing their old consoles through scalers on fancy modern TVs that expose all the smearing and noise (especially 4K TVs) and streamers who want an image that won't be too much more muddied by compression. And they're essential tools for people recording documentary or archival footage. If you're happy just playing it on a CRT, then it's probably not for you, no.

Not exactly accurate on the 1chip vs 2chip naming. 2chip strictly refers to PPUs whereas 1chip integrates both PPUs as well as the CPU into a single chip. "2chip" should really be called 3chip but good freaking luck getting anybody to change what they call things. TL;DR 1chip = PPUs and CPU in a single chip 2chip = 2 distinct PPU chips and a third CPU chip

Question: I see an extremely clean, nearly mint SNES for sale at a local store and it’s the DKC bundle - released on Christmas of 1994 or early ‘95 I guess. However, the barcode starts with the UN2 code and my other SNES are 1-chip for sure and they all have the code starting with UN3 instead… My question is: does anyone know if there was a jump in video/audio quality between the first batch of SNES - the ones that are heavier and used paint on the “eject” button to write the word - and the ones toward the middle of the lifespan yet right before the 1-chip batch? (I’m under the impression that the 1-Chip series started w/ the Killer Instinct bundle in late 1995, and the last version was the SNES Jr. in 1997. Those have received extensive coverage in the last couple of decades regarding upgraded video output. I wonder if there were differences between the 1990/1991 batch and the 1993/1994 batches…) PS: it’s my favorite console of all time too ‘til this day… and rightfully so! ❤
