    I definitely want to hear more about the molecular chemistry of open cell vs closed cell foams (polyurethane). For example, how an Air Jordan 3 midsole from 2003 differs from one made in 2007 vs one made today. I’ve seen paint chipping from ones in 2007 that require restorers to repaint the midsoles but hardly see any cracking on the actual midsole itself. I’m sure this has to deal with the fact Nike is using more closed cell foams vs open cell ones.

    MJO23DAN Open cell allows for moisture which eventually crumbles the paint/midsole. Closed cell allows for minimal moisture and is less likely to crumble over time.

    I know It's been 4 years since this video and your comment on this video, but does anyone know if Nike (and all other companies) have moved to more closed cell foams so we won't experience crumbling on deadstock sneakers decades from now? If there was a move to these foams, does anyone know when? Also, have they moved on to even newer materials, EVEN ON RETROS, to where crumbling will be minimized in the future? Thanks!

    @@iandeleon8132 from my personal experience, I haven’t seen paint crack since the mid-2000s. It does seem as though Nike has slowed down the crumbling process by continuing to use closed cell foams. Whenever I see individuals posting restorations on Instagram, they’re mainly working on pairs from the early 2000s and older. Anything past 2008, they are mainly just regluing shoes.

    Offset is an interesting topic. I used to sell sneakers and when business women would come in and try on shoes they'd always say it feels like they were falling backwards. At first I thought it was strange, until I realized that they were wearing heels all day and going from heels to athletic shoes created a huge difference in offset. So ladies, switch to flats or your old running shoes before you shop for new ones.

    I have a question about midsoles. When a midsole is off-white, as it is often the case with "vintage" reissues, is it to simulate an aged shoe, or is that how midoles actually were made back in the day?

    Hi Tiffany. Since you worked at Nike, what's your favourite midsole cushioning system (or foam) and is there any type of foam that Nike hasn't used so much in the recent years that you feel like could've been used more? Also , aside from Boost and Bounce (which we all know), is there any other cushioning system or foam that you really like and may not be so popular?

    I noticed you didn’t mention drop in mid soles, I wear a lot of skateboard shoes and I’ve noticed that a lot have a vulcanized rubber outsole or cup outsole that covers the side as well and then the cushion pretty much all comes from a super thick insole midsole combo. Why would a company choose this style over a more traditional method?

    bin r Stack height & offset are lower (vs running shoes) as perf objective is board/deck feel. Rubber extends to sidewalls for durability & grip as for many tricks (& basic ollie) the lateral sidewall of your front foot is often scraping the board/deck. Love the series Tiffany, keep up the great work!

    I’m talking about super thick insoles that basically act as the midsole cushion, some people call them “drop in” midsoles, because you can take them in and out of the shoes. The insole acts as midsole of the shoe, so if you took it out the shoe it wouldn’t work properly. Sorry if I worded my first comment weird.

  • @Dibanator

    Similar to the Kobe AD NXT 360, where the insole is also the midsole cushion.

    bin r thx for clarifying. yes, got it. an example is vans ultracush. objective is to provide 'crash protection' w/ a thicker insole, but at the same time NOT sacrifice board/deck feel. both the insole + board/deck flex absorb impact when landing aerials. problem w/ TPU/eTPU/midsole foams is lack of ground/deck feel. that's why

    Hi Tiffany! Great video! Loving this series. I have had a question on my mind for a while. Do they take into account size/weight of the user when making a midsole? Or rather, how much does a person's size or weight affect the durability and functionality of the midsole? Example: Size 15 boost for a 200lb person vs size 15 boost for a 350lb person, vs a size 8 for a 120lb person? Do these things matter when developing a midsole? Or do they develop a foam for a specific sized person and apply it to all sizes? Is it a negligible difference? Thank you, Sneaker Friend!

  • @cheeseburgerplain

    @cheeseburgerplain

    5 жыл бұрын

    I think generally no. Brands develop their shoe based on a sample size, lets say US 8. and do most of performance testing in this size first. Later on, they may do testing on extreme sizes as well, but sole compounds would be the same. there might be slight difference on how the outsole/reinforcement bars/midsole are shaped to support the bigger size. However, on a sport or market where the average size are bigger like rugby or american football, the tests are done on a bigger sized shoes, like US 10 instead of 8.
