The Brave Wilderness hosts and crew are professionally trained but receive assistance from animal experts and safety personnel when in potentially life-threatening situations. Permissions were obtained by the crew to film in all locations associated with this series. No animals were injured, killed, or removed from their natural habitat in the filming of this program and instances where animals are brought to the scene are clearly acknowledged in the video. Professional advice should always be sought before entering any dangerous environment, or before encountering any species of animal. Every precaution is taken to handle animals with care and in the least stressful way possible; expert opinions are often solicited when handling animals that may potentially inflict harm to any cast and crew.

When I was 3 years old, me and my friend found a box turtle in the woods behind our houses. We decided to capture this thing, and bring it home. We managed to get it home, and were feeding it lettuce that it didn't seem to enjoy much, when my hand got too close to its mouth. That's when it bit me in the web of my hand between the thumb and forefinger, drawing blood and pain for the first time in my life that I can recall. My mother patched me up, then made us return the thing to its home. I'm 58 now, and still remember that pivotal moment between not understanding, and suddenly understanding real pain.

I saw these snapping turtles (along with Red Turtles and Painted Tortices) down in East Texas. Scary things--snapping turtles--almost prehistoric appearing. I've known fishermen who have lost fingers or even an entire thumb to these turtles. Great video of what they can do. I used to stop my vehicle and rescue turtles trying to cross highways. Pick them up and run them across the road and deposit them on the other side. Many Texans would simply try to run over them. I felt much sympathy for them and performed an "alien abduction". Arriving back at the pond, these turtles had both "missing time" and an "air flight" to tell the other reptiles about. Suffice it to say, their tales were probably not believed by the other turtles . . . chalking their experience up to "swamp gas."

So, what did he do, he stopped the car, jumped out and got the snapping turtle and put it in the back seat of the car, much to mom's consternation. He let it out about a mile later. My kids and grandkids love wild animals. Like me. Teach em right. Me and the 5 year old at the time G son was planting with me when a nice garter snake came out of the stone wall and began sunning. I had him look, 2 feet away. He looked, said "is it a bad snake",(we have Timbers here), said nope and picked it up from underneath and let it sit there along my arm. The snake realized he had company holding it and defecated on my arm. Didn't bite at all and calmed pretty quick. But the little guy to this day loves to laugh at the whole poop part. It's a defense mechanism and that musk takes days to wash off. All 7 grandkids love snakes. Feed them every 2 weeks for most. Not a lot of clean up, the Ball lived 28 years and grew to 3.5 feet. This grandson is 8, I'll start with local ringnecks and when he's ready a corn snake.

I grew up on a lake with snapping turtles in it. Plenty of them. Even caught one fishing using a worm unintentionally. I don't think I have to mention this, but do not pick one of these up. I've seen a snapping turtle 14 inches in diameter put marks in a broomstick that caused me to find a whole new level of respect for the power in their bite. If you grab one by the tail, It can still bite you. It's one of the few turtles that can actually reach that far back. The broomstick was so he had something to bite on so he didn't bite us. We got to hook out and let him go as humanely as possible. If you see one in the road or have to move one, do your fingers a favor and give its mouth something to stay busy with like a stick or something. They won't let go, especially if you try to pull away, but do so gently they're not as robust as they look. As long as there is some thing in their mouth, they can't really bite you unless it's thinner than what you make available to them.
