    I thought the same exact thing but I have seen multiple channels get very negative towards people providing (constructive) criticism and go as far as to turn off comments and do what they were going to do anyway. Oh well, live and learn.

    sometimes it is just difficult to separate the constructive criticism from "troll" criticism. Reading a comment calling you an idiot and kind of insulting you makes you kind of numb to all criticism. I don't know if this is Jake's experience just giving some perspective

    Just a heads up! U might already know this but I'll throw this out there! If you would of crossed your trailer chains, the chains would of caught your trailer hitch before hitting the ground! If your chains aren't long enough then lengthen them!!! It will save you from disaster! Imagine if your receiver broke at a higher speed let's say on the interstate!? In fact here in Pa, you can get a fine if chains are not crossed! Just a little heads up! Love the vids!

    I agree.. make it solid, be heavy but it won't bend as easy as that open box. When you can extend the trailer tongue, reinforce it by making triangles. Link it back to the frame. [__]►--○|[__]_)

  • @chdecoys
    @chdecoys6 жыл бұрын

    Jake, it looks like your spring shackles in the rear of the jeep are bottomed out on the frame and not hitting the bump stops.Not allowing the spring to flex out flat. Get Izzy to bounce up and down on the back and see if the spring is hitting the frame. If that’s the case longer shackles are needed. U need longer rear shackles ASAP. More broken parts are on the horizon especially with the added tongue weight of the trailer.

    Door Handle -- Take that one screw out and look behind. You will see two metal rods that connect the door latch + door lock. There are small plastic clips that break, which might be found at autozone? but on amazon for sure. Temp fix = Use the plastic clip from the lock to replace the broken clip and fix the door latch. been there done that.

    I kinda seen that setup not working for long because of it changing where the weight distribution would be. I believe if you adjust the trailer to be longer instead of the hitch being longer it'll work out much better. these are the thing that create the memories though! if you didn't break it then you wouldn't have a story to tell later.

    And the receiver is the thing that the ball hitch slides into. You broke the ball hitch or in your case "pintle hitch.. Not the receiver. I saw that coming also. I build trailers for a living. I didn't say anything because my comments go un-noticed most of the time anyhow. Glad you kept the old hitch with you.

  • @fataxe1

    It's because it induces a bending moment. If he put some riggers that mount to the bottom of the bumper it would triangulate it and work. Extending the trailer might make it handle weird.

    Hey Jake, Expedition Overland fixed this problem by splitting their swing out in half in the middle. They are able to open the swing out with their trailer on the hitch because the 2 swing outs are half as wide. Also that windshield is going to get you pulled over eventually.

    Just move the spare and the trasharoo to the trailer. You already have a spare mount on top of the trailer. If you loose the original lunette(correct name for the hitch ring) then you will loose the pivot ability of that setup unless you go to a hitch made specifically for off-roading.

    Hate to hop on the "told you so" crowd but I was just talking to a friend at work about how long that "extension" would last. I bet it would have been until at least the first use of it on a downward departure angle but didn't even last that long. The physics of the stress are done for you - unhitch the trailer to open the gate. This was a shock to no one really, just happy it didn't happen at fifty five and throw that loaded trailer into traffic. Good luck with some more thought out fixes - great channel and have followed you from the start.

    It's definitely a good idea to cross your chains from your trailer to your truck. Left chain to right hook, right chain to left hook. It will helps center the trailer and keep it from jerking left and right in the event that it comes loose. In some states this is required by law.

  • @jessetate6244

    Seen that breaking, put a lot of stress on the receiver, the tongue should have been lengthened instead...If you Can Jake, get to a welder/fabricator and reengineer that tongue making it longer (extend-able).... Duh, just watched to rest of video... Nevermind.. you got it handled.... open mouth, insert foot LOL

    Pushing the hitch so far out, it was bound to happen. Expected either the bumper mount bolts to shear from the torque or the hitch tubing itself. Guess we found the weakest link. Lot of leverage working against that setup, especially if the trailer was tongue heavy

    looks like the problem was running the safety chains to the d rings on the bumper. their too far out, when you were backing up one of them pulled tight putting stress on the hitch most likely the noise you heard.

    Man if you had come to the machine shop where I work, I could’ve made that extended hitch out of solid billet steel!! At least you had your back up!

  • @insaynbcr

    @insaynbcr

    6 жыл бұрын

    And that would have effectively changed nothing. Sure the extension itself could take more abuse, but the leverage on the bumper would be the same, and now with the added weight of solid steel, rather than tube steel. The area where the hitch attaches to the bumper would be the next area to fail, then the bumper or bumper mounts would be next. The correct way to fix this is to extend the trailer tongue, and use triangulation from box corners out towards the tongue tip.

    Hey Jake, I'm sure you've got pleanty of suggestions, but if you want to make it possible for you to open your rear door, you should extend the length of your trailer hitch. This will give you the support and strength you need. Theres too much stress on the receiver And the longer you make the receiver the more stress is added to the jeep. Thanks for the videos and good luck on your journey!

    So many “I knew it would break” comments. Quite frankly, you are lucky the tube broke before it twisted your hitch down. Now, if the attachment to the jeep is sturdy, and that’s not common in jeeps, you can get a thick wall reviver, or even a solid receiver, to prevent this from happening. A much better route is changing the spare tire/rear rack to allow a normal receiver and avoid the abnormal hitch setup. Good luck down the road.

    Sorry for your troubles Jake. I didn't realize they used such thin walled tubing to make that extension. May I suggest relocating the gear and spare from the back of Jade to the trailer?. That would allow for off road clearance and put the joint back where it needs to be. I know it means rethinking storage. But this could have been very catastrophic. You were very fortunate that this happened at the specific moment that it did.

    Honesty I saw that coming. Well made and all that but that's a lot less weight onto the frame and more onto the receiver. More than likely jackknifed a bit and put too much stress on the long hitch.

    2:41 look into that, Wednesday I bought a truck, Thursday I drove it home. Spokane to Portland it showed me 17mpg, I purchased a 2400# unladen flatbed trailer in Portland and headed south, 18mpg until I got to the hills, clearly trailers should improve your fuel economy. Perhaps your Flux capacitor is defunct?
