Smyth Busters: Appendix Carry is Unsafe

Спорт

This debate has been raging on the World Wide Interwebs for a long time: "Appendix carry is unsafe, don't do it!" vs "Appendix carry is OK, don't worry." That's quite a difference! Which side is right? Is appendix carry safe or dangerous? Steve and Caleb are here to settle it for us. Appendix carry is positioning your daily carry gun on the right-hand side of your waist, over the appendix.
The reasoning of the "anti" appendix carry faction is this: When you sit down, the muzzle is pointing at some important bodily parts, including your femoral artery and, for the gentlemen, your "guy tackle." If the gun should go off accidentally, the bullet can do some serious damage. But.....
Appendix carry is safe, says Caleb, if you have a good-quality firearm with a properly functioning safety, in a good holster, and you've had sufficient TRAINING in safe gun handling. Caleb's Rule: If you can't trust a firearm not to shoot when you don't want it to, you probably can't trust it to shoot when you need it to.
A risk point with ANY kind of holster is re-holstering. Do it incorrectly, get the gun snagged in your cover garment, and an accidental discharge can happen. Pull the garment fully out of the way, keep that finger OFF the trigger, and even do a little hip thrust to get the muzzle angled away from your body. A good-quality Kydex® holster retains its shape so it's unlikely smoosh closed and snag on the gun as you reholster it. Many holsters also have belt clips that let you attach and remove the holster without taking the gun out of it. Do a LOT of unholstering / reholstering practice drills with the gun unloaded, so you program the safe holstering process into your muscle memory.
When Steve does appendix carry, he does it ONLY with a Glock® because the striker is not fully cocked, so if it did somehow accidentally release, it wouldn't have enough force to detonate the primer.
So the myth is BUSTED. Appendix carry is safe IF you do it correctly.

About the comment about people's weight: I am a fat guy. It isn't impolite to mention those sorts of things. In fact, it is really important. Everybody's body is different, and learning how to carry was really hard for me. I have a box of holsters that don't work for my body type. We all have different bodies and it is important to recognize that something you suggest for one body type might not work for somebody else. Thank you for being real about that.

One product I would recommend for anyone carrying a Glock in the appendix position is a striker control device.. It’s essentially a replacement back plate that gives you the added security that comes with carrying a DA/SA gun. The “Lucky Gunner” channel has a video all about it and is where I first heard of the device. I have one on my Glock 19 that I carry appendix and consider it an absolute MUST HAVE.

I have been conceal carrying for just over a year now. I used to prefer just behind the hip but always carry appendix now. It's easier to conceal, closer to your center, faster to draw, and the main things for me was constantly checking my shirt in case it came up from getting in and out of my car, and people being able to see or grab it while standing in line.

I had an accidental discharge with my Glock at my 4 o'clock position during a (complicated) training exercise while holstering the gun (trigger finger got caught). Entirely my fault. I felt like someone had really slapped my a$$, and for a moment I was afraid to look, expecting bloody rags. However, the 4 o'clock position had saved me, and everything was ok, except for my pride. Knowing my limitations by that experience, I would never consider appendix carry. Personal decision, of course.

This is why training is so, so important. You're always going to have a chance of messing up under stress if it's not trained into muscle memory. And one of the most basic things to train are the rules of firearms safety. Keep your finger OFF the trigger until you are ready to shoot, right? And you can't be ready to shoot until you can see your sights, your target, and are aware of what lies beyond the target, right? If you don't have that down to muscle memory, there's no safe way for you to carry, to be honest. It should be apart of your every interaction with your gun. Time for another 5000 rounds of dry fire, eh?

@@ancliuin2459 A negligent discharge indicates a failure to follow the 4 primary rules of firearms safety. A negligent discharge while reholstering, specifically that your finger was anywhere near the trigger during reholstering is a clear example of that too. If you are doing a self admitted complicated training exercise and had an ND, you missed the basics of firearms handling and failed to properly follow the 4 primary rules. I would be more concerned about trigger discipline than holster location first and foremost. Reholstering any firearm safely on any part of your body requires a clear and deliberate action to ensure an ND does not occur (IE - a shoulder holster with someone potentially behind you comes to mind). There isn't any reason in the world I could imagine having to reholster fast without deliberate positive control of all facets of gun safe handling. When I holster the firearm at the range (or anywhere else) I clearly have any and all of my fingers well away from being anywhere near the trigger, and I clear any garment or other potential obstruction with my support hand, and I slowly and smoothly return the firearm to the holster (or I remove the holster from my body, carefully and deliberately return the firearm to the holster and then put the holster back on my body). Please go back to step one of safe firearms handling, and re-read the 4 primary rules of safe firearms handling, and then repeatedly practice them in a safe location with a clear and safe firearm, without any live ammunition anywhere in the room.

100% agreement about a Glock for appendix carry since it is not fully cocked! Another common practice amongst the folks I shoot and train with is to never holster the gun on the body. We all use a holster similar to the Eclipse holster shown (alien gear and concealment express are examples), we always holster the gun off the body to absolutely prevent the possibility of getting a shirttail or key ring caught in the trigger guard, then put on the entire holstered gun. It's an extra step, especially while training (we train how we carry), but it's a lot safer! Great video! Important subject.

For every claim of a self firing holstered SIG, there's always an explanation for how the trigger got pressed. Of course, its rather embarrassing to admit you caused a ND if you're supposed to be a trained shooter, so you get these claims. But nobody can ever show the actual safety mechanisms having failed, which is the only way a SIG (or any other striker fired handgun) can shoot itself with no trigger depression. Even with the drop safety issue, it was still only occurring with a trigger press. However, it was inertia moving the trigger.

Nobody who has claimed their SIG shot itself has been able to show that the safeties failed. Even without a hammer fired gun, appendix carry is safe given safe action by the user. One big mistake that can get anyone using any gun is not minding basic gun safety. Literally, there are folks who move to holster with their finger on the trigger. Another, and related probably, is rushing to re-holster. If you're not mindful of where the gun is going, what might be in the way, or if anything might be inside of/obstructing the holster... things happen. I'm willing to bet that shirt tails tucked into trigger guards accidentally have led to a bunch of "my gun shot itself!" moments.

But, most of the time I am working and bending over and squatting a lot to pick up large objects and for me that’s where 3-4 o’clock really shines is for a more active lifestyle. Key thing is quality holster and good awareness and training. Also for those that have had inguinal hernias like myself or just have back issues, appendix can be a little cumbersome. Giving your body a break front loading all of that weight and transferring it to your hips does help after weeks of appendix. Just my two cents and personal experiences carrying firearms. 2 questions to help me understand better. 1) if the Glock's striker were released from the 95% at rest position, is it really true a cartridge would not fire? Perhaps the spring compression isn't linear but a 5% difference between success and failure seems well cutting it very close to bet your life on. 2) why deliberately break, even flaunt, very basic safety rules because, what, I'm special or I know more than anyone else so they don't apply to me. I'd offer, given the choice between the two, a professional should ALWAYS go for safety and NEVER promote a practice contrary to basic safety. Otherwise is to deminish your credibility. Thanks for reading. I would appreciate responses to both questions, they are honest questions.

I carry a Glock 19, both hip and appendix carry. Although it is not the most appropriate gun for the latter type of carry (the Glock 26 probably is) it isn’t that bad, either. I wear a Galco TUC226, which is not great in the reholstering department and I usually have to wiggle the pistol a little, in order for it to open the part of the holster that covers the triggerguard, that tends to collapse under belt or pants pressure. I agree with Steve that Glocks are possibly among the safest pistols to have “cocked” and pointed at your body, but I also think that the real safety comes from NEVER putting your finger in the triggerguard until your gun is pointed at your intended target. Thus, most guns will be safe enough for appendix carry, IMHO.

I've appendix carried for many years and the only thing that I disagree with is the comment about needing a short barrel. I personally prefer appendix carry with my full size 1911. The barrel helps hold the grip into my body to minimize protruding as it rests between my thigh and my man parts. An accidental discharged in this position will miss both the femoral artery and my man parts.

The vast majority of holsters nowadays are one clip kydex arrangements, and they pop off and on easily. So pop the holster off, reholster the firearm in a safe direction, and then put the holstered firearm back on your belt. There is no need to tactically reholster 3 seconds faster than the safe way.

I've been appendix carrying a compact size 1911 for years. Compact size because of size AND weight! 1911 because of two safeties! I've come to the conclusion over the years, if your carry gun is too big and/or too heavy AND you don't feel safe carrying it, you WON'T! I appendix carry primarily for access to your gun while driving! I had an old school shooting instructor advise me to always check the safety prior to holstering AND place my thumb over the hammer when holstering on appendix carry and I've been doing that ever since! Plus with a 1911, you can easily and inconspicuously put your hand under your shirt from time to time and do a safety check!

With training and testing each time with the current clothes it's okay. If I'd carry a Glock I'd want the striker control device back plate thingy, the one from Langdon Tactical, so the trigger can't be pulled when the thumb is pushing on the backplate. As most carry options, there are downsides in certain circumstances. The distance to it is the same when someone tries to grab it. Especially when one is on top of the other. The concealment is important, one handed draws need to work and as always situational awareness to not even get into a mess. I'm intrigued by those harness options that evade belts all together. You should get into that topic more especially with more winter clothing soon.

The folks who say things like "I don't carry plastic/tupperware guns/I don't carry anything that don't start with a '.4" type things. I'm not knocking guys who carry 1911s, that's your right. But if you're open-carrying a heavy-ass 1911 with a round chambered and your hammer cocked to the rear and you're cracking jokes about the carrying-habits of others (I've seen it, my local gun shows, indoor range, and mom & pop ammo shops...), then yeah I'm gonna make fun a bit. AIWB is plenty safe if you have a quality holster and a safe gun. That's all. And I don't even consider the notion of where on your anatomy you might shoot yourself in the event of a negligent discharge into my carrying decisions. If AIWB is dangerous because you'll shoot your d*ck off, then 3 o'clock carry is just as dangerous because you'll shoot yourself in the femoral artery. Caleb kinda mentioned that in this video. That's why I said buy a good holster and keep your finger out of the trigger well completely until you're pointed down range, then the hypotheticals about shooting yourself don't matter.

Having a gun in the back bothers me as somebody could see it when I lean forward or bend over something and then perhaps be tempted to approach me and take the gun from me. Also, if you carry appendix all you need to do is look down if you're concerned in any way about the state of your firearm. My choice would be Taurus 850 all-stainless-steel wheelgun with fully concealed hammer in a Stealth Gear Ventcore Appendix holster. The safest possible firearm to carry in arguably the most comfortable holster to carry it in. This combo serves me well on the range or when I carry it unloaded around my house. I've done both, and while I sometimes still do Appendix, I really think it fails when you have to get in your car. Isn't that when most of us want to concealed carry? When we're going somewhere? Pocket carry can accommodate everything from Sig 365 down to NAA .22 LR. Personally I think Ruger LCP .380, or Beretta .32 Tomcat, or S&W snubbie .38 works best. Bigger? Also it takes away a pocket I would otherwise be using for my other EDC stuff! 😀 I found that getting the right combo of gun belt, holster, concealment wing, and foam wedge has made appendix carrying a complete non issue for me. I can get in and out of the car, I can go on a road trip, I can run around, squat down, pick stuff up off the ground, all good. And best of all, I can completely conceal a gun with a 5 inch barrel, 17+1 capacity, a weapon light, and a spare mag all in the one holster.

One rule I think it a good one is to never reholster with the holster on. You take the holster off, holster the gun and then reinstall the holster on your person. Most accidents seem to happen while people are reholstering (when a cloth/something gets into the trigger guard unnoticed). If you take the holster off, your clothing Can't get into is... and you can SEE that there's nothing there to snag your trigger. I think most modern holsters make this more feasible, because they can be taken off and put back on in just a couple seconds. It's really not much difficult or time consuming than doing it the "old fashioned way". ...I started typing this before 7:37 of course... but I think definitely think he's right (obviously).
