Smush Parker on Kobe Bryant Telling Him He Couldn't Talk to Him: I Felt Small, Disrespected (Part 2)

Ойын-сауық

Watch Full Interview: • Smush Parker on Feudin...
Part 3: • Smush Parker: I Wouldn...
Part 1: • Smush Parker on Being ...
--------
Former Los Angeles Laker Smush Parker opened up about his time playing alongside Kobe Bryant. Parker, initially signed to the Laker's practice squad, endured uncertainty regarding his position on the team as no one told him whether he'd made the final roster. Despite this, he turned up for training, bringing a "worker's mentality" to the court. He later discovered he'd be starting a game mere minutes before it began. Even as he started 162 consecutive games and averaged 11.5 points, the lack of a guaranteed contract kept him on edge. Playing alongside a legend like Bryant wasn't appreciated as much as it would be now, Parker revealed. His frustration over missed shots during the infamous game where Bryant scored 81 points was also shared, lamenting that he could have scored 20-22 points instead of 13. He also reflects on Kobe's statement towards him, where the late NBA great told him, "You can't talk to me. You need more accolades under your belt before you come talk to me."

Most people who are trailblazers or who are world famous or super rich are usually extremely arrogant and pompous... People forget what a monumental dick Kobe was in that 05-08 stretch. Dude was still in his 20s, had just become the unquestioned leader of the Lakers, and had a massive chip on his shoulder. The Colorado trial, being beaten up by the media, talk that he had run Shaq out of town, bad teammate, etc. So he had a villain mentality and was a huge ball hog, and there were some games (elimination games in playoffs) where he just outright quit on his teammates. But being humbled by all the above eventually made him grow up a bit and mature. I also think getting Pau as a teammate was very important for his personal development. They really seemed to have a brotherly relationship, I think it helped Kobe to have a really elite teammate that he actually got along with and were similar in age.

Honestly my reaction woulda been the very next practice I’m asking to play with the second team, and I’m cooking whoever is guarding me. AND I’m checking Kobe the whole practice. Prove to Kobe and everybody else you deserve what you got. Now I would never tell a grown man how to react, but I think it was a fight or flight situation (basketball only).
