SMT: Devil Survivor Review | Don't Get Microwaved Challenge!

Ойындар

Over a year after uploading the Nocturne video people liked, I'm back to project new undiagnosed irregularities onto new JRPGs.
Optimally I wanted to be uploading an SMT4 video right now, but due to delays (I'm slow, and also I got sick, and also I 'm slow) I'm uploading an /this game/ video.
Kind of glad I dragged my feet for a few select bits though. The part at the beginning where I talk about spin offs felt kind of dated since pokemon: legends had just released and I think it had been a while since a non-persona SMT spin off had been made.
It'd be really goofy to say what I said when, if anything, pokemon was now the one doing more spin offs (one instead of none).
Then Soul Hackers 2 got announced and it looks neat and it's getting a steam release and I'm right again SMT does more spin offs, you can say the things I said without being wrong again.
Other key part that benefited from being slow was the section with SMTV music. Two of those clips I used did not exist until right before I looked for them. The funniest one being "footage of X character audibly praising the chao garden in a different outfit than the one they wear in separate footage that already exists of them praising the chao garden for a juxtaposition" Manifesting right as I need it.

Sorry to be that guy, but 6:21 isn't Hoodoo Sorcerer. It's actually Credits. Those two songs are just different mixes of one another, which is why they're easy to get confused over. It's also not helped by the actual game using the "Credits" mix of the song during one of the Hoodoo encounters. This soundtrack is over 8 hours long and there's a song from Edward Scissorhands in the game's files. I feel like the soundtrack is also confused about itself.

Right before she was revealed I released the only other Vtuber video on the channel, which has a clown on the thumbnail. Just now, like 40 minutes ago Hololive announced 3 new members of the Indonesia branch, one of them was designed/drawn by the devil survivor artist. I'm starting to think it might actually /ALL/ be real...

@@foulenergy Personally from my own experiences I believe that humans sometimes send themselves messages often through dreams, creative projects, or even just random thought. I think that's partially so much media has ties to supernatural and spiritual themes. Like with you just making all that shit up I found out all of this shit. Within Enoch 1 Nephilim are described as half angels/demons and with red hair and pale skin much like common depictions of clowns. What's more is that there are common reports of people seeing jesters and checkerboard patterns while on DMT trips. Checkerboard patterns are a staple of Freemason iconography. Shriners Hospitals for Children is a Freemason organization. They use clowns to entertain children. Clowns are extremely common in the modern media both as friendly and agonist characters such as Ronald McDonald. Black and white tribes similar to the checkerboard patterns are also common with characters like the Hamburgular and Beetlejuice. In many parts of the world such as Europe and the eastern US clowns and jesters wearing black and white stripes have been an important part of their culture for ages. Jesters have horns and horns and demons are constantly associated with horns. There are commonly reports of people having night terrors of a man with a black hat. Freddy Kruger is a character that attacks people in their dreams and wears black stripes. Black and white in occultism commonly references the concept of duality and balance. An example of that would be like Freemasonry that's responsible for the most heinous stuff known to man but they also run a lot of programs that still help people.

@@foulenergy I follow a guy on KZread called Rata, who posts video about the Yu-Gi-Oh! card game, often giving his opinions and crazy predictions in a mostly joke tone on what will be done in the future about the card game. Often times his predictions will end up being true, and more often than not, way too soon for it to be normal. Like when he did a video about Aliens, in which he went on a trippy rant about the column mechanic which Konami had tried to do something with a long time ago but was mostly left in the dump, only for Konami to announce the next evolution in the game will revolve entirely around the column mechanic *the day after his video released*. Or when he announced that a Fusion for Field Spell would never exist and then not soon after a new archetype was released that allowed for that option. As such, it has been said that he had the power to meme things into existence. Maybe you have that same kind of power. Maybe you can meme things into existence as well. I mean, you both have the same kind of humour, so maybe it comes with it.

Hey, it's here! Anyways, as promised, here’s my patented NEET Kitten Prima Guide to Devil Survivor. Like my Nocturne tips and tricks, this'll be aimed at newcomers who have never played the game before or haven’t delved too deep into the game’s mechanics. Alright, first off: How should you build your character? Like all SMT games, your main character can have their stats fully customized, but your allies have a set growth that they follow. They might gain stats in a different order, but they always end up at the same spot every time at level 99. This means that you don’t hafta worry about them at all and can focus entirely on the MC. The answer to this depends on which version of the game you're playing, and which ending you're going for. If you're playing the original, magic is the way to go nine times out of ten. A strength build is completely viable and sometimes even better than magic depending on the encounter you’re fighting and what route you’re taking, but you get a lot more magic to play with and the physical characters you get fill their niche really well. In Overclocked though, you have more skills at your disposal, so it's up to personal preference and what your team needs more in a given fight. Oh, and minor spoiler, but the boss of Day 3 is a gimmick fight. The gimmick being that only the main character can damage it. Since the gimmick attack replaces your normal attack, most people assume that the damage scales off of strength, but it's actually tied to your level. So don't feel like you need to build your character a certain way in order to clear it. You could put all of your points into vitality and still deal good damage to this thing, provided you're not fighting it at, like, level 15. I mentioned this because that boss is a newbie trap that makes you think that you HAVE to focus strength, and I wanted to clear up that misconception. Next, you want to make sure that your teams are diverse. Don't put your eggs all in one basket. If you have a physical party member, give him magic demons to cover him, and vice versa. If you've made one of your leaders a healer, give them demons that hit hard to make up for their lack of damage output. Later in the game, you fight enemy teams with varied weaknesses, and a lot of them cover for each other. You should do the same: Give your party good coverage and never have 2 demons that are weak to the same thing on one team unless you want to get pounded into the dirt by a big angry fireball, or the enemies primarily use one type of attack that they both resist. You get EXP and money bonuses for wiping an enemy party in one round of combat, and those bonuses are small individually, but they add up fast once you stack them with the other bonuses you can get from things like not taking damage or hitting weaknesses. What this means is that you want to make your demon slaughtering as efficient as possible in order to maximize rewards, and you can't do that if one of your teams is struggling to end a fight quickly because the enemy resists their primary method of damage. Experiment with different team compositions. In this game, demons have what are called "racial skills" and they give effects either passively or when you activate them. These effects can make or break battles, so you should get as familiar with them as possible. You can make some frankly broken strategies if you learn how to synergize your party. To give an example, having a Beast and a Kishin on the same team lets you move to an enemy, attack, move again, then attack again. Or using a Wilder and a Vile turns you into a highly mobile glorified demonic artillery strike. There's a lot of possible combinations and strategies to make all of them viable, so try out everything you can. Use and abuse Free Battles whenever you can. These are, as the name implies, battles that have nothing to do with the story and only exist for the purposes of grinding. Now grinding isn't usually necessary in SMT games, as the thing kicking your ass is usually just a hole in your strategy. But here, a few extra levels can be the difference between a powerful new ally or a new skill and getting your limbs torn off by a pissed off snake thing. It doesn't matter how good your strategy is if the enemy completely overpowers you. Now, you don't have to match the level of whatever boss/enemy you're fighting, and in fact you can usually get by being a few levels lower than them. But as a general rule of thumb, you'll be at a comfy spot for the next major encounter after you've gotten every available skill from the free battle. Use the "search" function when fusing demons. On top of being convenient, it's a good way to learn which combinations of races make which other races. For the simplest example, fusing two demons of the same race will always make an Element, and fusing two Elements will always make a Mitama. The roster of demons will change from game to game, but the formulas are usually pretty consistent throughout the entire franchise. This game lays out everything for you plainly, so it's the easiest one to figure this stuff out in. It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the different combinations to help yourself out if you try out another game. Bidding in the Devil Auction is always cheaper than buying the demons outright. Every other bidder in the auction has a threshold that they won't bid over, and that threshold is dependent on the price of the demon. That said, I haven't experimented enough to figure out each bidder's exact limit, but passing it will always result in a cheaper price than the "buy now" option. The trick to the Devil Auction is bidding really high and forcing someone to give up. Once one person gives up, the others won't be far behind, and there's no penalty for rapid-fire spamming bids, so just keep jumping up the price in smaller amounts after one guy drops out and you'll get the demon every time. Generally you can hike up the price by 50-70% in the first bid and someone will drop out. Then spamming 5-10% increases from there will get rid of the other two in just 2 or 3 bids and save you roughly 15-30% of the "buy now" price. These numbers aren't guaranteed, but the strategy is. Also, fun Easter egg: A lot of the bidders are named after characters from the Devil Summoner series. This knowledge doesn’t help you win the Devil Auction, but I thought it was a neat little tidbit. And here’s where I talk about the game’s optional superboss. This probably doesn’t belong in the “newbie’s guide” since you can’t even fight him until New Game+, but I’ve seen even series veterans struggle against him so I’ll throw in a couple of tips to help out. First, make sure everyone in your party has an agility stat of 27 or higher because you NEED to outspeed him. Next, make sure that every team has a healer and a Tyrant. Why a Tyrant? Their racial skill pushes the turn of whatever they fought back on the turn order. Basically, you never want to give him a turn if you can help it. He hits like a truck, has infinite range, and he has one attack that’s incredibly bullshit, so you want to give him as few openings to use it as possible. You CAN’T fight this guy fairly. Don’t even try, you’ll get your ass beat before you can say “wait did that say “-dyne”?!” You’ll also want Pierce for your physical guys and as much almighty magic as you can get your hands on for the magic users. In particular, Drain is gonna save your ass because of how long the fight can drag on and how many resources you’ll be spending. Oh, and for your Tyrants, having Race O/D on them is not necessary, but very helpful. What these skills do is increase the damage dealt to and reduce the damage taken from demons of the same race. Since the boss is a Tyrant, you can expect these skills to come in very handy. That said, they’re not an absolute must, you can make do without them. It’s like a difference of 3 or 4 skirmishes in the end, so don’t worry too much about putting Race O/D on every Tyrant you have just for that little bit of saved time. Now, this part is important for phase 3 specifically: Have electricity resistance, but DON’T use Elec Repel. Drain, Null, and Resist are what you want to bring in because he uses electricity and heals when hit by it. I don’t need to tell you why healing the superboss is a bad idea. Though if you DO want to reflect damage back at him, Phys Repel is the way to go. Have at least one party member that has it in order to give yourself a little bit more breathing room. Lastly, make sure everyone you take into the fight is at max level. It’s a bit of a slog to get to that point, admittedly, but it’s not as bad as you might think. See, the boss summons demon minions during the fight, and the game treats this as a free battle, meaning that you can retreat from it. The demons are between level 59 and 62 and they give good exp if you can wipe the entire group in one skirmish. Use this to your advantage and grind levels on his minions, then retreat once you feel like you’re in danger. Is this cheap? Yes. But so is giving the hardest enemy in the game a true damage nuke that gets 50% stronger every time it’s used. If the game wants to cheat, then cheat it right back. Hope this helps you enjoy the game. Good luck and enjoy your new life as a demon tamer! HaAaaAAAVvE a NiCe DaAy Also, great video! Loved your take on Devil Survivor!

Also the story for this game is great, but what I like the most relative to other SMT games is the passing, it's way less grindy and has more short events to liven things aside from just the battles

12:14 someone has probably pointed this out already, but the reason for not getting an extra turn in this instance is because of toubyou's racial trait chaos wave/ evil wave. One of it's drawbacks is the entire squad can't score extra turns.

Really well done! I think you're hitting most of the main strengh and weaknesses of the game on the head. Though I'd disagree about Devil Summoner being "hard". It's tame compared to some of the other mainline SMT games (looking at you SMT 1 and 2). I think Devil Survivor 2 is also harder. Though Devil Survivor 1 is mostly a stepping stone for 2. I found 2 much more complete than 1. Hope you're gonna look at it next! Keep up the great work man!

I greatly appreciate the use of Dilbert in this video. As for the game itself, what you said is accurate. The auction is a nice break from negotiations, and the menu system detracts from the game's setting. Good stuff.

Nothing can beat the fact that Atlus has MT (original) SMT (spin off) then SMT IF (the game that made Persona) then Persona (spin off,) then Persona 3 (side universe to P1-2,) then spin offs to Persona 3-5. AND SMT has spin offs from their branch too! Spinoff cenption.

Megami Tensei is the starter, Shin Megami Tensei is the permanent reboot establishing itself as mainline, and all other series that don't identify as Shin Megami Tensei by default are spin-off series (SMT I, II, if…, NINE, III Nocturne, Strange Journey, Imagine, Liberation Dx2, IV (Apocalypse), & V = Mainline SMT; all else is either spin-off series or one-off) Well SMT if… didn't “make” Persona per se, all that was lifted was the high school setting and demons acting as personal enhancers All Persona games share a timeline, they just stopped making direct connections to other games in the mainline starting with 3 (1 & 2 Innocent Sin are one timeline that went to sh*t, and 2 Eternal Punishment is a new universe where Innocent Sin didn't “happen” while P1’s were retained but duplicated, then all Personos from then on go from Eternal Punishment) Sorry for my sudden 🤓ing out

The game (and Devil Survivor 2) are easy IF you know what you are doing. There are a lot of easily cheeseable strategies and builds one can go for even in the early game, but they aren't all that obvious for newcomers to the game/franchise/genre. The 3DS games are slightly easier on top of that (as far as I remember) so it's perfectly doable to go through a Deathless New Game run. Of course, that is part of the appeal of the games: Figuring out strategies and builds yourself, cracking open the mechanics and then running over opponents that you struggled with before feels incredibly satisfying.

Odd, I never noticed DS1 to be that much more difficult than most games. I'll replay it in the future, I just remember the MC being overpowered if you focused him on Magic and gave him AoE spells for regular fights and those "Dance" skills for bosses, so maybe I lucked out into a good build that trivialized the game.
