I had a thought... If you have a spare bedroom you could set it up like say, a small office so you could simulate that environment seeins' as many of us work and listen in that space.

Hey Z. Nice review, dude. I like the new piece. Seems their build quality is improving. I'm currently running the S-8 stack for my speakers and the M200/SP200 stack for headphones. Very happy with both. I was thinking about adding the SA-1 amp or going with a tube for a different headphone sound, but now this exists. What to do... Anyway, keep up the good work. I do like to see you up in the Mezz every once in a while. It's nice up there! I would Keep it to Headphone stuff, though. Cheers!

since you Zeos mentions echo a lot, i would recommend acoustic panels. just finished my first diy ones this week. lots of videos about on youtube on how to make your own, beuse big rooms can be expensive to treat unless you make them yourself. if you have any reservation of the isolation inside(Fiberglass or fabric and they stand on their own, if you use the thickest one at 8" or 200mm. witch i recommend since they can absorb bass, pretty sure they go below 100hz.

Your house sounds like a church. Do some acoustic treatment and make a new series out of it. that would be a blessing. Amen

I know what you mean for home use, but I personally love church acoustics if done correctly. I’m not really a churchgoer but it’s interesting to hear during weddings and funerals.

I love the mezzanine for reviews! only a little echo-ey. perfect setting for iems, amps, and hp's, maybe not so much for speakers since you would have to lug them up there. I think some rockwool acoustic panels the same color as the walls would do a world of good and it wouldn't look hideous. Wouldn't help for listening to speakers, but it would make it less echoey if you wanted to do more reviews there.

Some folks bias their amps so that up to 2 or 3 watts is class A, which may be what they did.

did you try bi-amping this with some larger speakers - (like to you did the rf7-iii with the tubes) A1 on highs, pro amp on lows?

…have you ever considered also reviewing the SMSL VMV P1, too? After all, you reviewed (and loved) the SMSL VMV D1 DAC, but not its companion amp.

Agreed. There is not one review for it.

if it is pure class a, the pot could be adjusting gain and not attenuating the input signal. If I am not mistaken, this would cause power draw to decrease with volume as you would essential be adjusting the power output of the amp.

also class A/B if biased to be like 80% class a, would still draw the same power from the wall up until it loses bias and goes class B. This amp apears to use a PGA2311 chip for volume control, not really sure whats up with this amp, but i don't think it can be class a with the way its power draw is tied to input level. someone smarter than I will probably chime in and tell me im wrong, but its freakin weird

You are correct. the Volume pot is adjusting gain. So basically turning it up is turning up the voltage and the transformer inside is converting voltage to current. A class ab with a relay stepped attenuator should cut the power its giving and after a certain point kick it up to the b part. if I'm not mistaken.

You can get those power cables for 1/3 of the price if you get them from aliexpress and not amazon

PS there IS a matching dac to this.. The new VMV D1se [ apos.audio/products/smsl-vmv-d1se-mqa-dac?sca_ref=36221.ouwJgZltO5 ] I guess you can't stack them if they both have spiked feet..

Speaking of matching DACs to amps… I have yet to see a single review of the SMSL VMV P1 amp, the intended matching companion to the VMV D1 DAC. Why not be the first? 😁 I am super curious not hear your opinion of them matched together vs. using your other amps.

@@dennism1919 Almost any DAC north of $300 will have MQA now days. It doesn't mean the DAC is shit, just that you're paying a bit extra for a useless feature.

How about a review with the SMSL Tabebuia speakers shown on the Apos website? They claim they're a good match...........nice desktop system!

I own several Loxjie and SMSL.and have the smsl da 9 and loxjie d30 and d50. I can almost guarantee it will better.

Can you do some higher end speaker amps? Like Luxman or Yamaha's Natural Sound line?

easily would power them. Any of the klipsch RP line is super efficient. I have the 500s and any amp I have used with it, the volume knob can hardly be adjusted and I usually have to turn down the dac that I use to -15 or -20dB just so I can have more range/adjustment via the main volume knob on the amp.

Perhaps "cleaning up your desktop" works for Z by having the SE headphone out on the back, however that breaks the deal for me. A days worth of getting a cable hung up over and over again equals instant buyers remorse.

Maybe I missed something, but I think he was focusing in on the fact that there are not many that are either class a or class a/b and have those features. If I'm wrong and he was speaking more generally, then you're spot on and there's quite a few out there. I have a Topping MX3 doing the trick right now, it's far from great but it gets the job done.

What DAC matches good with the VMV A1 ? I currently have the Aune X8 Magic dac with it with upgraded opamps SPARKOS LABS SS3602.

I found it pointless. Overpriced, doesn't perform HUNDREDS of dollars better than the other little class D amps out there. Has less power and starts distorting when the volume gets over 60 and at max volume 70 its completely unacceptable. I expected more of a sound signature being hybrid class A but for me it wasn't there. Going back and forth between this and my SMSL SA300, I no doubt prefer the SA300 with SMDB filter. More powerful and sounds better.... to me. This A1 was made to make some money off the Class A guys that won't touch all the Class D gear SMSL makes. Also weird SMSL is marketing so heavily specs on a Class A, typically Class A and Tube gear is completely subjective and specs don't matter. Because for these guys good specs doesn't necessarily mean good sound....

There's no color coding, because of course there wouldn't be. Colors are for poor people or something. LOL

What R2R dac matches well with the VMV A1? I have the A1 currently with the Aune X8 magic dac (with SPARKOS LABS SS3602 opamps).

wood is stupid expensive, you're right. absolutely no reason for it, just like the rising gas cost and the costs of appliances and ac units. real reason is new sleepy administration, nothing more. they are going to make all things expensive for three more years, hopefully not 7 years.

Is the Hifiman EF600 a better headphone amplifier than this A1? I have the A1 and interested in the EF500 or EF600.
