SMSL SP200 THX AAA Headphone Amp Review

Ғылым және технология

SMSL send me this amp to review, which was good timing as it was one of the most requested items for me to review. I put it up against the Schiit Audio Asgard 3 and Drop THX AAA 789.

    For someone upgrading from a Fulla, which of these pairings would you recommend for a Sundara? Modius + SMSL SP200, or SMSL M200 + SMSL SP200, or Modius + Magnius? Or something else? I weight soundstage and detail resolution as highest factors.

    Thank you for this great review. I would ask you if pair this device with Monolith Sony MDR XB700, Audio Technica MX40, M1060, Ollo S4X can be a good choice? I want a Amplifier that adds the minimum coloration as possible, also the price range is really good for my budget. The Dac I have is Focusrite Scarlet Solo 3rd Gen. Thank you in advance for any response. :)

    Great review. With my LCD-X I found I prefer my Jotunheim being fed by my Topping D50s bypassing the Schitt multibit. I really expected the SMSL to be awesome based on the measurements but the 50s/Jot pairing is just way better. As you say, however, the SP200 is very competitive and may pair better with other Dacs and/or headphones.

    I have had the unit for a month now and i have no complaints about it. People are afraid of the shape, but it is not as noticable, since it is usually way below the eye level. Music sounds very good from my chord dac. For competitive gaming i might get a second, a more analytical dac.

    Great detailed insights! I was looking at getting the SP200 to replace the headphone output of my Mackie audio mixer (1642 VLZ4) as am not happy with the quality & output. Having to go 3pm to drive my Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80 Ohms H/phones to hear mixes. Can you please advise as to whether this would be a good choice for this purpose. My Mackie is pretty much the hub for a lot of sources including condenser mics and hi-fi CD/Tape players. Thanks and this is a rare gem of a channel that I was so happy to encounter on here. Big hi from Sydney for your great talent and work.

  • @Currawong

    @Currawong

    4 жыл бұрын

    I reckon that going to 3pm isn't a problem, as long as you aren't hitting max volume, where you can get channel imbalance. That's just a gain issue. This amp should work fine though as you can use either the headphone output (6.5mm x1 to RCA) or XLR to it if you feel you need more volume and better headphone driving capability.

    @@Currawong Thanks .. by the way the specs of the headphone output on the Mackie is not clear .. on its smaller 804VLZ4 sibling it says 60 Ohms headphone output. However for my 1642VLZ4 model it just says .. "all other outputs = 120 Ohms". Not sure! I was reading that trying to drive a headphone which has a lower impedence than the source impedence is not good. Well both my headhpones are below 120 Ohms, one is 44 and the other is 80. I think the hphone amp is the way to go?

    @@Currawong thanks for the quick response. I assume that the quality of sound coming out of the 789 will largely depend on the quality of signal going into it. Is the type of signal coming from the headphone out of my btr5 the same as what would come out of a dedicated DAC? I'm assuming they're both line level? Also would you suggest that I turn the volume on my btr5 all the way up on High Gain to feed the 789? I just don't want to spend all that money on such a nice amp as the 789 if I'm not feeding it the proper signal. By the way I'm using a Samsung S7 using the uapp app streaming qobuz and internal Flac files on my phone. I'm using a pair of hd6xx and I plan on buying the he4xx also. The sound is pretty good from the btr5 but I think both headphones would benefit from a bigger amp with more head room. • @sc0or
    @sc0or2 жыл бұрын

    If we don't talk about a bridged amplifier, a balanced input ends at the very first amplification stage in almost any schematic. So, the only purpose is to eliminate an electromagnetic noise from a cable. Thus, there is no difference either we convert it to a single ended in a buffer stage or in an amplification one. And in case of a bridged power amplifier I see no sense to amplify that noise until it will be negated on a speaker coil. However, if we talk about a no-feedback amplifiers (which sometimes sound charming), it starts making some sense to reduce a difference between N-leg and P-leg. But I doubt no-NF amplifiers can be easily found on a market.

    Got to this video late. Still don't get drop and smsl, labeling the whole, "it's balanced but not." They admit it's not truly balanced. But guess I just didn't get it. Might been good time like schitt (in most of their units), too just show single ended can be great solely; but in truth, I guess they did anyhow (i.e., it not being actual balanced) 😉 I've heard you in the past, and agree; that balanced is overhyped. Single ended can be made powerful with as good of low noise floor, as balanced. Having said this; question: have you used any PS audio stuff? Just was curious. Good review. 👌🏻👍🏻 Do feel it's (sp200) a great solid buy, absolutely.

    This is the reason why: benchmarkmedia.com/blogs/application_notes/audio-myth-balanced-headphone-outputs-are-better Balanced differential amps don't do a damned thing for headphones other than double the internal components and thus double the potential sources of noise and distortion. The XLR inputs are there to reduce connection impedance. So it's not a matter of false advertising or "fake" balanced outputs. It's good engineering. The XLR connector CAN provide a balanced output in addition to lower connection impedance but the balanced differential output doesn't increase signal quality while the lower impedance does. So THX (and Benchmark) keep the connector and ditch the balanced differential amplification.

    Smsl sp200 owner - the volume imbalances are really bad at low volume. If I want to listen to quiet music, I have to lower the source (tidal) and then bring the smsl volume to about 10 o’clock before the imbalance clears up. Also - after a few months I started hearing ticks and pop noises. After lots of equipment switching and cable changes, it was narrowed down to that amp. Make sure the vendor you buy from has a good return policy before getting this amp.

    if it is as good as they say i would even cannibalize the guts and put in another box and replace the volume pot with a decent discrete attenuator ... that would provide you with a very high end amp. I am thinking about this very seriously. In my experience the volume pot has a very high impact on sound and discrete attenuator are pretty above normal pots. It is impressive the gain in transparency and soundstage reproduction. You can pin point instruments and players ... i think cheap volume pots cand add distortion ?

There's a good chance that someone in the group might know of an affordable solution. • @eva2k0

    Functionally the only real differences are the gain stages, build quality and a linear vs logarithmic potentiometer. The potentiometer is the biggest issue. The linear pot in the sp200 is part of why you can't use sensitive IEMs with it. If you want to power IEMs with a desktop amplifier, get the 789. If you don't care about that, the SMSL is a little less expensive and smaller. The differences between THX AAA 888 and 789 are inaudible. The distortion is already so low as to make no difference. The 789 also puts out a little more power, but the sp200 will likely power just about anything you throw at it. I use it with Modhouse Argons and it's great.

    The easy way to remove a lot of noise from the output of an amp is to increase the output impedance. Even just 2 Ohms, instead of the unnecessary aim for close to 0 Ohms (for the sake of chasing popularity on measurement sites) will lower the background noise considerably.

    Well, you are right saying it's slightly less Detailed, less separated and clarity lacking vs 789. But to me isn't that just 'slight', It's kinda more huge the difference. Ok, i may have a more sensitive hearing than average, finding differences in every cable and dac filters, but the difference was kinda marked, even jds atom is more detailed for lot less money (!) even if the sound of sp200 is more 'free', but kinda flat overall.. 789 even in SE kills it on SQ. I do wonder how asgard 3 compare to 789 for half the price! Maybe this has already been told?

  • @Currawong

    @Currawong

    What headphones were you using? I didn't want to bring out the $3k+ headphones and say "The difference is huge" because people don't usually buy those headphones and this kind of amp at the same time, so I used headphones closer to the price. Also, not everyone listens to the kind of music I do. But it is interesting that some people notice the differences very strongly, and some less so. I saw someone on Amazon review it and say that THX amps sound "compressed". As for the Asgard 3, I probably mentioned the 789 in my review of it. I can't remember for sure though!

    @@Currawong Unfortunately i couldn't compare THX aaa 789 directly with Sp200, but i compared Sp200with atom which to me was enough. Thx aaa 789 was in loan, before i owned Lcd-3, He1000se and He1000V2. Then after i sent back sp200 i had it back. Differences we're real.. I tried it with Audioquest NightOwl, Sundara, Audeze El8 Titanium, AKG K712, AKG K371, enough variety, well, my dac is kinda cheap, the Topping D50 with Optical glass connection, but it delivery nice detail even if pushed, i'll upgrade as soon with D90.. But yes, to me the difference with relatively cheap headphones we're defenately more than slightly. Yes it delivers huuge dynamic, but i felt they was filled too much with bass with lack of clarity dynamics. Clarity is not enough for such 300€ amp, to me at least. Maybe as you say would be the power supply, idk, i'm not an expert at all. But it's ok! I didn't tried yggdrasil and such top tier amplifications, i'm kinda new, so maybe it would be slight to sp200 to 789, but more huge 789 to 2000-3000€ amp :)
