Smoothing a Field with a Box Blade

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The last go around happens today in the fern field. If you've seen my other videos you know that I started off with an overgrown field of wild ferns and have since knocked them down and tore them out with my box blade and root rake. Today I'm continuing the job with the hopes of this being the last time I have to deal with those pesky ferns. I've got my 2012 Kioti DK40se HST, HLA 66" Root Rake and 78" MK Martin box blade on the job today as I attempt to smooth out the soil that got dug up pretty good while digging out roots using my root rake in previous episodes. With some basic setup, the box blade does a beautiful job at getting the grade of the soil back where it should be with the high spots knocked down and the low spots filled in. Come along today as I do a bit of axe swinging too trying to take out the only remaining tree stump in the field. The tractor wasn't quite up to this job so I got back to basics with an axe and went to it. In no time I"ll have some nice grass growing here and hopefully will never see a fern pop up through this soil again. But let's be honest, the fern fight isn't likely over but for not at least I'm going to call it a win for me. Thanks for watching folks!

You got that meadow cleared pretty well. Hope the grass fills in for you the way you'd like. As you mentioned, it will be a nice area for family Sunday picnic. Enjoyed a full-watch. Have a fine Friday and upcoming weekend. 👍🏽😄.

Get a paint pen and draw a line from nuts to the wheel rim, tractor frame and you can see at a glance if a nut has backed out as the line will be broken. Saves a good bid of faffing around with a torque wrench.

Just started watching your videos. You probably know this and probably already have one. A hydraulic top link works very well with your box blade. I also installed a hydraulic side link to tilt the box blade from side to side. Comes in very handy. Enjoy your videos.

Glad to have ya here Don! I was looking into them but the thing that has kept me from getting one is the thought of hooking up to implements and having to walk back and forth to the cab to get the position of the top link just right to connect to the implement

Put a “spinner” on your steering wheel. You’ll love it and wonder how you got by without it. Thanks for another great video, Sandy.

I actually took my last one off because of the kick back spin when working on rough ground without power steering (usually when backing up and turning fast). Sometimes the spinner would break loose and I'd get my arm cracked when the wheel went spinning wildly. That and it was catching my sleeves on my flannel shirts during the winter.

Nice spot for a feed plot for wildlife. I've got an area very similar. I still need to do what you have accomplished. I don't have a root rake but have tried using my pallet forks to get under the six Inches of plant material on the surface. It works but is a lot of work. The top layer will actually roll like sod but creates a roll too heavy to lift. A little bit at a time and I'll get there. Deer and moose Should be happier next season

Yep I’d do the same thing you’ve been doing if using the pallet forks. It’ll get the job done. I dont have many moose around the property but do get deer pretty regularly.

You did a super job there, that’s definitely going to make a nice area coming up, great demonstration of the box blade for this project. Also thanks for pointing out those maintenance items, especially the loader bolts, I’m going to mention that to my dad just to note on his CK30 just to have a check of them :). Also was wondering for the wheel nuts, would a set of those wheel nut indicators similar to what transports use, work in this case? they could give you a quick visual if any of the say started to loosen up? Just a thought :). Take care, cheers Sandy!

Hi Sandy, what do you use to remove rocks in the ground? Do you think the grapple is better for "digging" while driving forward, or the box blade with the hooks dragging behind you? Im thinking dragging the box blade might be easier on the tractor than pushing and digging. My soil conditions are such that mixed in with the roots, and scattered bowling ball size rocks. Did you fill the rear tires with beet juice or the calcium? Thanks for the great videos.

Hey Ken! I find the rear tines in the box blade are best for digging up rocks. I have beat juice in my rear tires

Just watched this older video, being an old hunter, my thoughts always goes back to animals and their food supply. Your cleared area would have been a great place to plant a food plot for deer.

I normally set the blades level at 1mm to ground then drive around, box blade will cut the highs and fill the lows all in 1 go. Still your method works and looks great another trick i can use. Looks amazing and good job. I watched you with that stump, i now have another way to get her done. I love how you used your tractor but did not over use it.

MArk the nuts and bolts with a paint pen. Then you can visually inspect if they have moved with you walk around it. Nail varnish works as well in a pinch
