    What you said at 10:40, about letting go of the mind and thinking… my art teacher from long ago always told me: “Draw what you see, not what you THINK you see.” She told me that at age 5, and I still remember that to this day. Art is like music: you just have to let go and let your artistic energy flow out of you!

    This actually is the corner stone of my work, without connecting to just being in the heart I could not draw a thing. I find the work just happens to draw itself the more I keep the mind out of the way. Thank you so much for watching... all the very best. 🙏

    Dave I'm a commissioned artist myself. Have been for 5 years now. But this description has FINALLY answered a problem I've suffered with since I began my art. I've never found a video or tutorial like yours that actually explains the differences. You've solved a massive problem for me. Thankyou

    I love my mono erasers, I've bought 5 and have them scattered through my different supplies so it's always at hand. I can't conceive of drawing a portrait without it. I'm working my way through your pastel and graphite videos, such a wealth of information! Never too old to learn, thankfully.😆 I'm ordering this smooth paper today, I've used and loved the Bristol vellum for many years for my graphite portraits, excited to try the smooth.

    This is the first video I've watched of yours Dave, what a lovely way of explaining everything to the viewers. Clear, concise, and spoken softly that resonates with the viewer. I found this highly informative, and I certainly learned a thing or two here. I'll be watching a lot more of your content in the next few days. I really liked how you also suggested letting your heart take over and less thinking, this is something many artists struggle with and they feel like they are battling the drawing, instead of letting their creative side flow freely. Thank you.

I have always been interest with how the mind plays tricks on us, looking for reassurance and finds food from negative or positive situations. There is a place within us all that is awareness. aware of being aware is bliss... love in action. I open up to this way of being and draw from this place. 😊 You are welcome... appreciate your kind words, all the very best. 🙏

    Thanks for this it was the best explanation of the different papers and their advantages and disadvantages I've found. As a complete newbie to drawing the astounding range of papers available at the local art shop bewildered me they all said they good for pencil so how would I know which one would be best for me? I left empty handed. This really cleared things up for me and helped me decide. My style is semi-realistic more towards the cartoonist side so skin texture or dynamics isn't really much of an issue for me. I also own a lot of expensive bush pens for calligraphy which really do require smooth paper so my choice is easy. Thanks this was exactly what I needed.

    Depends on the texture of the skin. If the pic has more texture then vellum paper is needed. Some pics have few texture. In that case smooth paper should be used. One should realize the pattern of texture of face & choose paper in that way.

    I don't really think it matters. It's all preference. I myself have been a hyoerrealism artist for 18 years. I only use bristol smooth. I create all the texture the reference photo has with my pencil and erasers. I would say use the Velum if you are new to graphite drawing and once you progress switch to the bristol smooth. The only paper i would use that's not Bristol smooth as a hyperrealistic artist would be Hahnemuhle nostalge paper

    The best paper for Polychromos, is the Fabriano Artistico Hot Press Extra White. If you can't findit for some reason, then go for the Legion Stonehenge Hot press water colour. The Fabriano, is the hardest paper and the Polychromos are the hardest pencils...Another reason, that makes the Fabriano the most ideal, is the fact that their hot press version, has an ideal tooth, for any kind of job. You can use that paper, with most mediums and have geat results with any of them! The Legion Stonehenge, isn't as hard, but it still is one of the choices, for most Artists who use coloured pencils for drawing. A third suggestion, would be the Arches Aquarelle Hot Press, which is one of the most popular quality papers out there. I would suggest that, only if you want extra vibrant colours, like when sketching cartoons! Other great brands of paper, are the Winsor & Newton and the Hahnemühle, both these companies, make top quality paper too! If you want professional results, go for any brand, but choose always their water colour/aquarelle with Hot Press tooth and Extra white. Both Polychromos and the Caran Dash, have rustic colours rather than vibrant cartoonish colours you see on cheaper pencils like Prismacolour. Hope I helped!

    @@greekveteran2715 thanks for this in depth reply. I have picked up fabriano artistico paper and I currently use it as my go to paper. I find it very difficult to keep this paper clean from the residue left on the paper from coloured pencil. Maybe it's just me being in experienced but the white on the page seems to get very dirty . Have you ran into this issue?? Also have you tried the derwent lightfast paper? If so would you recommend?

  • @greekveteran2715

    @greekveteran2715

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@David-I0 Fabriano gets dirty easily, because of 3 reasons. It's because of it's sizing I guess (the substance that covers the surface) but that's also our fault, when we are not very careful. Try not to touch the paper with your finger tips, also try to keep it as clean as you can, to avoid those dirt spots that appear on it! Don't forget, that these kind of papers, are ideal for professionals thus very experienced people and are built for water colours, not for pencils that we use on them! The last reason, is the fact it's quality varies from place to place. Next time you buy anything, don't choose the cheapest place because quality, has gone down on all products these days. When you find a place, that sells the good stuff, stick to it and don't experiment, buying from other places next time! I haven't tried the Derwent Lightfast, but I know it's great for coloured pencils! That's a paper I didn't recommend, because I've never tried it. That being said, the only way, to find what paper suits you most, is to get some of them and try out yourself! That's the only way we can find out and that's what most people will recommend you to do!
