That photo of Michael looking up was taken by me. We were in Sherman Oaks, CA at the time. I think it was 1992. May have been ‘91. I still have the original negative. I used a Mamiya C330 twin lens reflex camera.

Thanks Kent, that's fascinating - I chose this specific image for my mix because it's one of my favourite 'Smooth Criminal' portraits. So, if it was circa '92, I assume the shoot wasn't to promote the track Smooth Criminal (which was released in 1988)? Do you recall why it was commissioned? And would you care to share with us a bit more about the photoshoot and how it was to work with Michael?

I was painting a 10-story mural of Michael. He and I, along with the Hollywood Arts Council, had selected the north wall of the historic El Capitan Theatre on Hollywood Blvd across from the famous Mann's Theatre (formally Grauman's Chinese Theatre). I started the project in 1990 and did many photo sessions with Michael. I used his Smooth Criminal character because the building was an Historical Monument and I wanted to be true to Hollywood in the '30s. Michael agreed. I decided in '92 that I wanted better shots of his hands so we met in Sherman Oaks and after we did the shots I needed we just played around with some others. This is one of those extras. Your graphic design is excellent. Did you get this from the Michael Jackson Magazine?

That is all explained above. I had Michael dress in his Smooth Criminal clothing when he would pose for me because I was painting a giant mural of him. It had nothing to do with promoting that album. The outfit was consistent with Classic Hollywood in the 30s like Fred Astaire and Cary Grant and I was painting him on one of Hollywood's most historical buildings.

Thank you. I am an artist, though I can't take much credit for the image design - I was deliberately inspired by the original Smooth Criminal single cover, combined with your fantastic photo. I'm amazed that this photo was taken 5 years after I thought it was - I had no idea. I found the image on the internet, assumed it was taken circa '87/'88 during the making of the SC video (one of MJs best imo). You must be a very talented artist to be able to command Michael's time and permission for the mural. Hats off to you sir! It's a privilege to have you sharing your experience here. May I ask, was it easy to work with Michael during the shoot? Were you offering specific direction, or just asking him to provide a variety of his iconic poses?

Fun fact he once went to a night club and heard that they were playing a remix version of his song and since then he like remixes version that's one of the reasons he remix some of his songs on a album he released at the begin of the 20th centaury I think
