SMOKY CITY TOUR! Flying Around Edmonton in a Cessna 172

Having just completed my Private Pilot's License, I thought it was about time I took a passenger with me (and recorded it)!
In mid-September, smoke from all of the forest fires along the coast quickly brought the visibility down all across the province, but this particular day in Edmonton only brought it down to 8 miles.
That's still well within limits for VFR, and it ended up being quite a smooth day over Alberta's capital city!

Nothing like hearing yourself on LiveATC to make you feel self-conscious about your radio calls 🙃 I'll talk slower next time lol

Wait until you spend a bunch of time on LiveATC to see if you acknowledge a call then forgot or just missed it altogether. Flying humbles us in many ways.

Excellent video. I really enjoyed seeing your newly acquired flying skills as well as the views of such a beautiful city. We are so lucky in Alberta to have both Edmonton and Calgary. And of course all of the other towns and cities that make up our amazing province.

I used to fly out of YXD while getting my PPL at the Edmonton Flying Club. It’s a little sad to see the airport all tore up, but things change. I was flying a Diamond DA-20, what a beautiful aircraft. Thanks for the great video.

Nice! I was in Calgary just as the smoke was rolling in. By car: the weather in most of B.C. was impossible. I still stopped by Springbank (marginal VFR) where a couple of determined souls were doing circuits.

Even with the smoke I found the views of Edmonton enjoyable. I have at least one still photo of the city from a Fleet Canuck in about 1958. I got my PPL in 1957 with the Edmonton Flying Club and yes, there have been a few changes since that time. The dominant building then, the MacDonald Hotel, is hard to even find in the crowd of newer and much larger ones obscuring it. I flew into Calgary only a couple of times but lived there for around 10 years too so would enjoy seeing it from a scenic flight. At least the Calgary Tower would still be easily identified. Whereas you flew over the old airport to view it under destruction I made a similar flight over the new one to see it under construction. That would have been 1959. So I'd much enjoy more of this type of video.

Congratulations on your PPL. Why did you block out your face with the propeller blade in your Facebook photo? We see plenty of photos of your knees and feet in your trip reports. Would be nice to finally see what you look like! What's the current hourly rental cost for a Cessna 172 in Edmonton? Look forward to the video where you said you would explain why you did your training in Edmonton rather than Calgary. The commuting costs and time must have been significant!

Over a built-up area you must fly 1000 feet above the highest building in the vicinity. In Edmonton that's Stantec Tower, 3105 feet (see the Edmonton VTA). Add 1000 to 4105. Round up to 4500.

Very nice Alex, and congrats on the PPL. It it would be cool to see you do flight where you fly in a Cessna as PIC to an Airport then you get in a big jet and go fly somewhere as a passenger. Then come back and fly home. Just an idea a Cheers Dion YT: #dionm01
