"not that bad"?!! The groundbreaking techniques used in the video were a revelation when this played back in the 90s. There was nothing like it. Michel Gondry is a genius.

Back then it was one of the most touching pieces of music for me. I used to listen to it for at least hundreds of times. What a masterpiece of slowing down, emotions, mood, erotic, surrealism and pure beauty. There is hardly any music which makes me emotional even after so many years....

That language is brazilian portuguese with a bit of a carioca accent, Nina Miranda's voice is always a treat to our ears, she also sings a bit of french in a couple other songs IIRC. I can't really say anything about her french as I don't speak any french, but her voice always sounds great to me in whatever language she sings. If you like a bit of portuguese in songs, try listening to Sofi Tukker as well. They did a live performance on KEXP that you definitely should listen if you also liked Smoke City. For someone born in Germany and grown in Canada, Sophie speaks portuguese very well and the only slight giveaway I've noticed so far that portuguese isn't her first language is the way she says "jacaré"... but besides that, I could have thought she either was born or raised in Brazil, which is amazing, she clearly put a lot of effort learning portuguese just because she loved how it sounds in poetry and music.

O mais curioso é a semelhança de estilo na voz e o jeito de cantar que a vocalista do Sofi tukker com aquela música "Brazilian soul" é quase que praticamente igual com o estilo do smoke city de fazer música... estamos falando de uma janela de 20 anos de diferença, mostrando o quanto smoke City é atemporal. Já curtia no final dos anos 90, impossível não ouvir canção "Brazilian soul" e não se recordar do Smoke City.. 😄

Only English (sang with a somewhat french accent) and Brazilian Portuguese (with a strong southeastern Brazil accent). Nina Miranda (vocalist and lyricist) was born and raised in Brasília (Brazil's federal capital in the West of the country) but sings the Portuguese parts of "Underwater Love" with a strong Rio de Janeiro accent (and I don't know why of this). The English part is sung with this supposed French accent, but actually she talks perfectly, with a light Brazilian accent.

@@syntheticsilkwood2206 I was just watching another video talking about The Matrix and the vfx supervisor, John Gaeta, didn't claim he invented the technique, but that he was inspired by other works. I've seen Michel Gondry mentioned in another comment but I couldn't find anything linking him to this music video either, but on the trivia page on his profile on IMDB, it mentions similar effects being used in Björk's Army of Me (it's very early in the music video) and an 1971 short by the animator Bruce Bickford with a name that there's no hope you'd be able to find it, even if it is available online somewhere. I would love to find more about the history of similar effects being used before The Matrix, but I don't have much hope. Nothing useful can be found on Google or KZread anymore, their search results are getting progressively worse each year, to the point it looks even worse than the alternatives they displaced in the early days.
