Smittybilt Pivot HD Tire Carrier Jeep JK Heavy Duty Hinge 2843 - Review and How to Install

This video shows the installation and review of a Smittybilt Pivot HD Tire Carrier, (Heavy duty model 2843 hinged), on my 2011 Jeep JK. I purchased this to reinforce the tailgate hinges for mounting a heavier spare tire. Installation is very easy. There was no cutting or drilling. Everything lines up in the original holes. It is definitely heavy duty and seems like it will hold whatever size tire you want to mount. In my case that will be some 34’s.

    Thanks for the video, you made everything easier up to the point where you said this is the tricky part, you will need some muscle to get those bolts thru the metal plate, I am talking about the 3 bolts that support the spare tire, unless you have a heavy duty press, they do provide the nuts that you will need to tighten all the way to get the bolts set. everything else was easy, your video was by far the most helpful thank you I also love my new tire carrier!

    I know it's not critical, but the 3rd break light wire should be put into the side of the mount prior to putting the mount on so that it's a neat install, otherwise your wire is just hanging out. May be necessary for a larger tire but it can easily run up to a 34...not sure about 35.

    The instructions say to torque the 4 bolts that go through the main plate, light bracket and wheel mount bracket to 80 ft lbs, how do you do that? The tightest I got them was around 60. It's just difficult holding the wrench on the other side of this heavy ass plate and not letting the torque wrench slip on the other.

    @tdavelli5 жыл бұрын

    Can't believe how bad these instructions are. As for the spacers and gaskets. Logically 2 go on the left (1 top 1 bottom) to compensate for swing arm on right. But where do the other 2 go? Also how did your height adjustment settings (up 1 hole) in video work out with your 34s. I have 34s coming too.

  • @RVHabit

    @RVHabit

    The instruction are really the worst. there should be two rubber type spacers and two thicker steel spacers. Both sets go on the left side. The rubber spacer goes on first that seals against the Jeep then the steel spacer goes on. Tire location is good but you probably could go a little lower if you need to.
