To be fair, he didn’t specify what or which world cup. I’m sure we can invent some new sport and become reigning champions at it before the rest of the world catch up. Although, seriously, UK sport has got a bit better in recent years (England football the exception I’m led to believe)

Why is this the most patriotic speech ever given in Britain?

Since then we've had the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, when Britain came 3rd and 2nd respectively. We've had a British champion at Wimbledon twice. The England football team are even now getting ready for their first World Cup semi-final in 28 years. Whatever Smithy did, it was good work

I'd never heard of this guy until youtube runs of the late late show. Today I've watched the entire 3 series of Gavin and Stacey, then this. Brilliant.

Still gives me goosebumps 8 years on.

I had no idea who this fellow was when I stumbled onto the video a year or two ago (I was born in Britain but have lived overseas most of my adult life). He's inspirational; I know about him now and watch the video regularly. Smithy (Corden) is brilliant.
