Smiths Quavers animated advert (1988)

There's some great hand-drawn animation in this late-80s Quavers ad, plus a rather disturbing ending if you think about it for too long. (He's a dog, she's a cat...) I remember Colin popping up in a series of adverts, but that sort of thing can't happen nowadays thanks to laws banning junk food ads directly aimed at younger viewers. Or something.
Incidentally, this is when Quavers were made by Smiths; they're now manufactured under the Walkers brand banner.
(Please remember that this is an off-air VHS recording, so don't go expecting 1080p HD quality. I'm fairly certain that this video isn't commercially available, and I've uploaded it for its historic interest only. My dad used to work for Smiths Crisps (out of Peterlee in Co. Durham) as a delivery driver in the 80s, I ended up with a lot of merch from the promo materials from Quavers and other Smoths brands, including the best one of all, a Pack-a-mac, which was a raincoat built into a backpack, in yellow & green and adorned with the Quavers logo and this fella in various places on the mac part & the backpack... :D
They don't make animated commercials like this anymore...

It's a shame
It can't be a bad thing not to encourage junk food, but that's not the same thing as discouraging it! Either way, the ban on advertising to children also had an unforseen side-effect: it virtually wiped out kids' shows made by our main commercial channel (ITV) overnight, as they could no longer make enough money from ad time around them. Tells its own sad story...

Quavers are the best.
Well, British kids aren't getting any thinner these days, so the jury's out on just how much good such laws actually do!

I guess, and of course if that happened here at all, it would probably be the same way as well. You can argue til you're blue in the face how evil advertising can be, and I've heard that many times over. I suppose in the end, America has to set an example the rest of the world can follow accordingly if every child chose apple slices over snack chips.

He did Smiths Square Crisp ads too before this. So he was a regular for Smiths.
