Smith Machine Calf Raise

(Starting Position)
Before you begin, put a step platform in the center of a Smith machine, and position the bar at around neck height.
Grab the bar and step on the platform. Then, duck under the bar and place it on top of your traps.
Your toes should be at the edge of the platform and your heels should be off of it.
Then, raise your heels to lift the weights and unlock the machine.
Keep your back straight and your legs extended. This is the starting position.
(First Movement)
Inhale as you slowly lower the weights by lowering your heels until they are close to the floor.
(Second Movement)
Now, exhale as you use your calves to raise your heels so that the bar is lifted as high as possible.
(General Tips)
After completing your reps, relock the weights before leaving the machine.

    I had a step platform slide out from under me with hundreds of points over my shoulder while doing this workout. Feet launched in the air, falling towards my butt, with all that weight over shoulder falling very fast above me. It all happened in the blink of an eye, I accidentally twisted the bar at the last possible notch and I heard the loudest slam in my entire life. It locked into place and I fell on my butt bodyweight only with less than 1 cm to spare. If the bar didn't twist in place, the only thing stopping all that weight from slamming directly into the floor would've been my spine crushing like a soda can.

    You can get stoppers to put underneath so it stops before hitting ground

    @@corzawillo3649 yeah at the time I never ever used the Smith machine except for this one incident when my buddy came along and picked the workout i wasn't very aware of the safety features/lack of safety features I should have done my due diligence, given more thought, and looked into it, I still can't believe I could almost paralyze myself from something so stupid on such a whim. This smith machine was old and had detached safety pins which were missing, but this wasn't even something I thought about until after the incident. This happened 8 years ago I still genuinely lose sleep over it, there's many stories online of people paralyzing themselves on smith machine after uneventfully passing out and slowly crumbling to the floor with much less weight over their shoulders. It makes me shudder thinking what would've happened to me since I was literally falling to the floor with my legs in the air, falling as fast as gravity would allow. I probably would have died to be honest, all that weight just crushing my spine starting with the vertebrae on the back of my neck where the bar was touching. There's a part of me that hopes I was saved because of a well designed safety feature, maybe their was a built in fail safe mechanism that stops the weight from falling if free falls at a certain speed, it disturbs me to think I just got really really lucky

    This just happened to me today and I searched about it on yt lol. Was kinda embarrassing but atleast nothing bad happened. My gym's seated calf machine is weird so this was my only option:/ alas I'll have to see something else now.

    I'm too tall for this machine. The machine tops out even while I stand straight up, forget about raising my feet

    The step box can potentially move or flip under load, especially when your feet are in flexion at the bottom of the movement. I wouldn't risk it.

    The weights will fall down. If you have heavy weight on the smith machine and just dump it without locking, there is a good chance it will injure you on its way to the ground or else the machine itself will be damaged.

    Hugely bad idea. Don’t use step boxes for calf raises. These can easily flip under the weight, bringing you and the weighted bar down on you. Use a 2x4 flat on the ground, or a step specific for calf raises.
