Smiling Friends But it's Old Hanna Barbara

Фильм және анимация

Smiling Friends but it's a Hanna Barbara cartoon! Had a lot of fun recreating Charlie and Pim in that retro cel animation look!
The music is Sneaky by Kevin by Macleod, and if anyone's wondering, the audio is from the 1st episode of the second season.

Hannah Barbara cartoon characters always had something around their neck, such as a scarf, ascot, large neck collars, etc. This was to make head movement easier, as they didn't have to paint new cells for the body and head together. The neck pieces were markers for the animators so lining up the shot connecting the head and neck would be easier. EDIT: Shaggy built different guys, he doesn't count. XD

    >Zach Hadel (born 1943) and Michael Cusack (born 1940) became cartoonists at Hannah-Barbara in their ripe 20’s, together they created the hit show, Smiling Friends. A series that quickly became a trailblazer that was decades ahead of it’s time due to it’s snappy, semi-improvised dialogue and unorthodox sense of humor. >Smiling Friends ran for a whopping 14 Seasons, a record breaker among Hannah-Barbara’s extensive catalogue and the series would go down in history as an iconic piece of animation history held in regard as high as the likes of other timeless classic such as The Flinstones and Scooby Doo. Merchandise of the original series are now priceless collectors items, a plushie of Charlie once infamously sold for $600,000 on EBay in 2011.

    >Smiling Friends, as we all know, would even receive a reboot aimed at adults on Adult Swim that appears to also be on it’s way as a pop culture phenomenon. Zach Hadel even cameo’d in multiple episodes, such as playing the store owner in An Alan Adventure, who was also uncannily modeled after him >Michael Cusack would sadly pass away in 2002 when his then 25 year old wife murdered him by poisoning his food with arsenic over the course of six years to inherit his massive fortune given to him by his work on Smiling Friends and the other Hannah-Barbara classic of his creation, The Adventures of Koala Man. >Some other shows that Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack headed during their time at Hannah-Barbara included The Mr. Frog Show, Gwimbly The Whatzit and Daniel The Demon Slayer, all three of the titular stars of these shows having all began as characters on Smiling Friends, Mr. Frog of course being a fan-favorite who made countless appearances across the show’s 14 season run. Some say Zach and Michael were some of Hannah-Barbara’s most iconic, legacy animators, second only to the two fellows the company gained their namesake from.

Man now I want to see a Smiling Friends Halloween special completely done in this style. With the plot being they have to make a guy smile by solving the mystery of why their creepy giant mansion is haunted.

The slight shadows casting onto the background beneath them like actual old animation cels is a great touch

My favorite subtle part is the shading beneath the characters to replicate the way for animation celoids were used

I remember watching reruns of smiling friends on boomerang growing up, it's so great to see clips from the old show archived online.
