Smile (a cappella)

Музыка

Smile is one of my favorite songs of all time, and I’ve always wanted to arrange it. Today seemed like a particularly apt day to bring a little sunshine to everyone, so at the last minute I decided to get a little crew together to make it happen.
Much love to everyone!
"Smile" by Charlie Chaplin, John Turner, and Geoffrey Parsons
Soprano: Erin Bentlage
Alto: India Carney
Tenor: Kenton Chen
Bass and arrangement: Ben Bram

Last August, 2019, I became a widower after 53 years of marriage. As a chorus and quartet singer, I know what it takes to produce such beautifully balanced sound and yours is among the best I have ever heard. It reminds me that until my beloved wife and I meet again, one of the best ways to meet the challenges of living alone for the first time in my life is just to smile often and move on, one foot ahead of the other! I would love to hear more songs by your great group!

Ben Bram does love to arrange in 5 part harmony... (Pentatonix, etc.) As an arranger myself, I have to say I love it too. 5 part harmony is the best! There are chords you can do with 5 parts (including but not limited to 9th chords) that you just can't with a quartet! (Most of the song was in 4 parts though.) Truly a great arranger and a great arrangement. :) Loved the rich chords, and also the attention to guiding us through the challenging lyrics of the song, simultaneously sad and upbeat, with an appropriately serious, but also ringing and joyful arrangement. Thanks, Ben Bram.

I love this arrangement and performance. It seems to me that, unlike some other versions of this song, this one carries a quite serious empathy with the times of sadness - it is not just a blithe or superficial "be happy because everything is fine". So I give thanks, for this beautiful arrangement, and beautiful performance :-)

Great comment. The words were written by Geoffrey Parsons who was gay. It seems to me that maybe the story behind the lyrics was his own sadness of being unable show public affection for the love of his life. I also think it is just perfect for a funeral. It is just such a sublime interpretation.

@LurkinMarsupial, I agree on the importance of empathy for a song like this. I think the sweet, sad melody (Charlie Chaplin's, correct?) really helps there, as opposed to a different song like "When you're smiling...the whole world smiles with you."

Unable to get it out of my head, I've listened to over a dozen versions on KZread, and this just made my Top 3...ranking right up there with Judy Garland and Tony Bennett! By the way, that Add 9 chord at the end...(A) absolutely no better way to finish a song, and (B) y'all sounded like Take 6 (which ain't easy with only four). As I listen to it again...and again...I'm also struck by some of those large, _clean_ jumps in the bass line. Nicely executed!

The _music_ was written by Charles Chaplin in 1936. The lyrics weren't added until 1954...by a pair of industry songwriters. Nat King Cole actually recorded the first version with lyrics that year. When I found this out, I was initially disappointed to find out he hadn't written the lyrics, _but_ upon hearing the original, instrumental version, I was immediately even more impressed with Chaplin than before. In addition to being a great actor and comedian, it turns out he was an incredibly gifted musician and composer!

@@OmniphonProductions Yes, the melody alone of the music is already incredibly gorgeous even without the lyrics. So it's already very impressive by itself to have been compused by someone who wasn't even primarily a composer.
