Public service announcement: if you rely on such a complicated method, and an enemy force is looking for you, and you are trying to escape, or get to da choppa(LZ/exfil), I’ve just got one tip, forget about declination and just orient, set your bearing and run. I recommend joining an Orienteering Club. Keep it simple.

Suburban Preparedness idk about Americans but in Canada we preprogram our compasses with the reclamation so we just shoot bearing and run

Wait, you forgot Step One: find the conveniently-located, perfectly horizontal cut-off stump that is right underfoot where you can lay your map and orient it using your lensatic compass. There should be a coffee machine nearby somewhere also, and an ice-cold beer or two with bowls of peanuts. A really good military ICB+C (Ice Cold Beer and Coffee) compass will automatically orient you in that direction, but it may cost extra. ;-)

I always tore off a flat piece of cardboard from an MRE box and used that as my make shift “table” for a flat surface during land nav 😂

Obviously without electronics you can still get lost with a map & a compass. Like you’re walking your azimuth for some odd, checking you’re in the right direction, and now you’re in a shaded segment between your target azimuth & back azimuth. Even worse if full woodland with no landmark sightings. I would take a highlighter, or make a triangle symbol on the map and designate it a field waypoint letter with the time & azimuth bearing on a separate sheet of paper.

Just get a good base plate compass, set it for your location once, no need to ever orient the map.

While I know how to orient a map with a lensatic compass and have relied on it for years, I found this video speaking too technical for newbies. It need a bit more of detailed information for someone to understand it. If it was made for the military, it’s typical jargon bullsiht.

Extremely bad or vague wording: " rotate the map and compass in the direction of the declination diagram "...??.. the Dec. diagram is located at the lower border of the map, rotating the map will rotate the diagram also. How about.."..rotate the map and compass in the direction "INDICATED" in the Dec. diagram until the compass needle is in agreement with the value of the listed Declination diagram, amount in degrees, and direction (East or West) left or right of North Line on compass face.

No... set the declination on the compass, line up the grid and the ruler and orient the map to grid north, secure map, line up your position and where you want to be with the ruler on the compass, rotate bezel until the green marker lines up with the north arrow, finally head on your way. your first technique is not as simple and allows for error because its far easier to set declination with just the compass using the magnifying glass than it is to set declination when the map and compass are connected. the hell kinda over complicated too much possible error crap was coming out of your mouth with that second technique? yes it works but compared to the REAL way to use a protractor its a waste of time. if you want to see the map better, then use the protractor. take a inner strand from some 550 paracord. tie a knot or two at one end and put the untied end through the center hole. put the center hole over your position and with the protractor lined up with the grid take the string and rotate it around to your new destination. take the reading in degs or mils on the protractor indicated by the angle of the string. from there you just add or subtract the degs or mils based off of a positive (east, right of magnetic north) or negative (west, left of magnetic north) declination on your compass.

I think It's how the US military learn and work. There is an interesting field related military video from the sixties where the soldier puts down rifle and helmet to take a lensatic compass reading. Here there is a rifle next to the 'table'.
