Smashing Pumpkins performed in Much Music parking lot in July 1998. I was watching from the street.

I was at this show. The full story should be mentioned here - we in the parking lot were out there waiting, being told the pumpkins may or may not be able to come out depending on whether the weather let up. These show usually ran about an hour live (there's an interview section not included here) - but this ran about 3 hours because the pumpkins basically refused to leave until they'd played for all of us waiting in the parking lot (we were standing there for several hours before the show, during the first set, and during the interview being told pretty much nothing by staff). It got to the point where they ran out of interview questions and just started running full SP music videos with minor commentary from the band in between. We didn't know what the hell was going on, but they came out and it was beautiful. On an interview that ran later, Billy said basically there was no way they were going to leave without playing for us outside. As a 14 year old budding musician at the time, that was such a revelation.
