Smashing Pumpkins - Live at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre, 1998.
Музыка
An Evening With The Smashing Pumpkins. Live at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre on May 31st 1998. Recorded from a television broadcast a week later. I believe this is the best quality copy to have surfaced to date - hopefully a full digital broadcast will surface one day. It should be noted that the full concert was never broadcast - but instead a TV edit. On the night they played 17 songs but the broadcast only included 9 (not including a couple of musical interludes).
Just before the concert there was an interview broadcast with Billy Corgan - I have uploaded that here: • Billy Corgan Interview...
Set List
1. To Sheila - 0:01
2. Ava Adore - 7:40
3. Tonight, Tonight - 12:53
4. Perfect - 17:17
5. Drumming Interlude - 20:46 this received the first standing ovation of the night. Broadcast has edited that out.
6. Bullet with Butterfly Wings - 24:58
7. The Tale of Dusty and Pistol Pete - 31:21
8. For Martha - 35:52
9. 1979 - 49:30
10. Summertime (George Gershwin) Piano Interlude - 54:04
11. Blank Page - 55:11

Reminds me of the story of when Jimmy first saw the Billy, James, and D'Arcy and they were with a drum machine. "It was awful, but the song writing was great."
I haven’t listened to these live versions I forever but Jimmy not being there is really noticeable sound-wise.

I feel like The Smashing Pumpkins in their prime would have been shortly before the Adore album came out, when they still had Jimmy on the drums. I always thought he brought something unique to the band that was lost when they replaced him with this Kenny Aronoff guy who was mainly a studio musician that filled in for different drummers. I always thought the Pumpkins were never quite as good as they were during the Mellon Collie era. Those first few albums were all really good and it seemed like they had just found their signature sound.

The producer carrys some co-responsibility here. He felt it was necessary to re-track because Billy outperformed James and D‘arcy by miles on the Instruments and they couldn‘t fulfill the requirements that were needed for the record. Different situation live of course.

I remember reception of Adore was very mixed with most people being disappointed that it wasn't "rocking" (which I imagine would also reflect in the live gigs, which I didn't attend). However, I quickly grew to appreciate this record, a wonderful testament to dealing with grief. The Tale of Dusty and Pistol Pete was a favourite I would listen to on repeat and had forgotten about. Fantastic.

I loved a lot of it. I didn’t get how people were like “meh!” Like Jimmy left. The sound was going to change with a new drummer. Matt did his best but he’s from Filter thats known to be pretty heavy. Hence the loud/sharp snare (I think). The jazz influence of Jimmy isn’t there. If you’ve followed them for decades you notice the difference. I was SUPER lucky to see them twice with D’arcy! Billy actually put me on a guest list. It was sold out at the 930 Club. I was obsessed with Billy. As a teenager I was troubled. Abusive home, death threats at school. I was a musician. I played violin, guitar, piano, flute, and can sing. I got lost in the music. It was a great escape. I don’t know why more people don’t appreciate Adore. It’s almost like a funeral, lol. They were super depressed I bet. At least I would be if my drummer left. Poor Pumpkins!

Recovering from a life ruined by drugs. Anxiety issues likely because of the psychological damage she took from drugs plus botched up huge lips that got ruined through face lifting (to be fair, she seemed to have stage anxiety all throughout her career). She had the opportunity to reunite with late Smashing Pumpkins but ruined that as well. The reason afaik is that she got butthurt when Corgan asked her to be part time first just to see how she performs. Considering her anxiety issues plus decades of not performing music that was a reasonable thing to ask. He didn't want to risk having to drop a tour in case she couldn't handle it. He even asked her to meet up and jam long before just to see beforehand how well she does but she never showed up. They then made the decision to get a different bass player instead. It's kinda sad. Wish i could go back to the nineties and save her from ruining her life.

I found this after watching a recent Kenny Aronoff interview this week about his time with the Pumpkins all these years later. He mentioned this gig and I’d forgotten I’d listened to it probably on Dave Fanning live and remembered seeing it on telly somewhere as well. Te amo mi gran billi corgan, fue una época increíblemente romántica para mi ese tiempo, todo se me dio en gran manera gracias.
Was 22 when Mellon Collie came out and purposefully ignored it at the time. Was a huge fan of Gish and Siamese dream, but living in that time, there was so much mainstream hype around bands like the Pumpkins and such overdone imagery in the MTV videos that I just got sick of any of the bands that seemed to be basking in all that glory. It's funny because after finding this video, I've actually have fallen in love with these songs and have watched/listened to this probably 20 times and have had Mellon Collie and Adore on constant repeat for several days. The audio recording on this vid is excellent and has a nice warm, vintage feel to it. Well done!

Nice one. I was at that gig. Was the first time I saw them. 4 times total. Last one a few weeks ago in Dublin. Never saw the full original band lineup. No Jimmy for this one and no D'arcy for the others since.
This is pure gold!
Drummers are tense and rushed. Part of the vibe is jimi's laid back, jazz approach to the kit. even when you watch him play you see him sot sway and move with the music. This dude is a machine gun that never brings it down to a lower gear. Makes some of these songs sound too overwhelming.

I was at this gig too - seated upstairs. I dont remember the bouncers hassling people for very long. It was annoying but my recollection is that by the middle of the third song people were getting to their feet upstairs and ignoring them anyway. I've seen the Pumpkins a number of times and I actually really enjoyed this gig. But I guess you had a very different experience. I can understand that. I've been to plenty of shows where I remembered it being crap, but my friends thought the opposite. I remember the audience giving the drumming by Kenny Aronoff and his team a standing ovation half way through and the same at the end for TSP. But like I said, we obviously experienced the gig very differently!

Kevin Hanrahan I love the pumkins I really do but I wouldn't have went to see them during this period, very self indulgent and terrible renditions of there classics, I saw them in 2000 wen they done the comeback tour at Glasgow secc, very slow to begin with but picked up halfway through then again in Glasgow O2 on zeitgiest tour alot better they were but still wouldn't say they were great, again alot of crazy jams and renditions of great songs like heavy metal machine, ruby and when they did play the classics it was just a quick run through

Hey David. I hear ya. I caught them that tour too - but in the Olympia again (2000). It was a bit of a mess you're right. There were some great moments but there was a lot of self indulgence. Still though, the pumpkins on their worst night beats most other bands on their best - in my opinion. Adore was my favourite SP album for years so to see it live was just such a treat. Could the 1998 gig have been better? Sure. I think if I'd gone along hoping for plenty of MCIS and bit of Siamese Dream I'd have been royally f**ked off! But I was already obsessing over Adore when they played this gig in Dublin. I worked in Virgin Megastore at the time and had my copy the day before launch - so I knew it inside and out and was just over the moon to see it.
I was just thinking the other night about which bands I would like to see live in concert if I could travel back in time. The top three were The Doors, Nirvana, and the Smashing Pumpkins. Then I hear about The Smashing Pumpkins reunion tour, well at least I will be able to see one band live. Can't wait!

D'arcy wasn't by herself with that. Everybody in SP has had issues with substance abuse and been through rehab, including Billy. Chamberlin has probably gone through it a half dozen times. As of 2017 it's been stated that everybody has cleaned up and is trying to stay that way (just to say something positive, ya heard).

I remember reading somewhere Billy was on a lot of downers, and something else during this era. Either it was that, or saw something funny.
