Smartglass Can Fade From Translucent To Opaque In A Second

Ғылым және технология

This smartglass goes from invisible to opaque in seconds. ESG Switchable is electrified privacy glass and can become opaque when you flip a switch. This is also known as switch glass or electrochromic glass.
What's really happening when you switch the glass? The smartglass has a liquid crystal film between two panels and is transparent when the film is connected to electricity. When a switch is flipped, the connection breaks.
The disordered liquid crystals make the glass opaque and this fractures incoming lights. ESG Switchable is available in a variety of colors. Getting some privacy is no longer a pain in the glass.

This was installed in smaller trains called Light Rapid Transit (LRT) in Singapore since 1999. They were installed as trains sometimes will be close enough to apartment buildings that the glass on these trains will turn opaque to prevent people from peeping into those apartments.

Sure you could but I do like the idea of having something like this in a smarthouse (not that millennials buy houses, right?). Their website said that it takes about 10W to power a square metre. It's a bit more than what I would have expected but still not that much. I'm guessing that you probably don't have AC in your house and all lights are LED, right? Got 'em solar panels installed yet? Yeah, they aren't necessarily cheap... Such is life under capitalism. Yeehaw!

Even if it's 'old technology' it's not a mainstream interior choice for the public and has probably had technical advancements since. If its promoted and sold I bet people would love it. The sliding doors to the ICU room I'm in right now have this glass. The switch is somewhere in the tracks to the door I'm assuming (I have a *very* limited understanding of how electrical circuits work) because when the doors get slid almost all the way closed, they change from frosted to transparent so the medical staff can check up without being too disruptive. And even though this technology isn't new obviously, I've been watching these for the past two days in awe because it's my first time seeing them. But then again, it was alsoy sister in-law's first time seeing them, but she's not as amazed at how things work like I am. Just *that* they work as they're supposed to.

Finally, I had this idea when I first tingled with one of the first LCD screens for calculators...(in the eighties of last century) They had a little plastic film over it to see the crystals. when turning it 90 degrees on top of the LCD, it became black. Later, as I understood, this plastic film properties were incorporated in the LCD module. That's when it became obviously that they could make whole screens black just by a little electricity... Too bad I did not have the wish nor the funding nor the material and the proper knowledge at the time to go commercial on this. Glad someone else did. Hopefully we can enjoy sunscreens in the future.....

What’s the U-value for the glass used in those windows? What about transmittance? Those factors are also important. Videos like this are nice, but it would also be nice to include some relevant stats about the performance of the products on display. It makes for a more transparent showcase (pun not intended) and more likely that someone would buy the product- assuming the goal is to drive sales here.

@@user-tm3lr5lc8j U- value and transmittance are thermal performance factors. I’m not asking about how ‘blurry’ the glass makes things look on the other side, I’m asking about how much heat loss or heat gain they allow via radiant and conductive heat transfer. These are really important performance characteristics for glass used in windows, which is one of the proposed uses they show here. It matters much less, if at all, for interior applications.

I mean it’s a liquid trapped between two plates. If you put oil between two sheets, that’s not drying out anytime soon

in 2010, I saw this technology used by Elon Musk when he toured the SpaceX Office. That even had automatic sensors to become opaque when a person enters. Whats new about this now???

This glass is old! They have had glass like that for at least thirty years, that's how long they have had it in the Museum of science in Ottawa Canada!

The title is inaccurate. This video never indicates the glass will be translucent (not clear and not opaque). I was looking for this type of switchable glass, but to go from clear to translucent, but not opaque, and assumed this was going to demonstrate it but was misled by the title.
