The first time I saw images of HA Dashboard it was love at first sight. Took me a while to work up the courage to ask her out, but now she's mine forever.
The long description for this project is on the website (www.drzzs.com).
Here are some of the most important links/text you'll need:
AppDaemon Repo: github.com/hassio-addons/repo...
Install instructions for non-Hassio: appdaemon.readthedocs.io/en/la...
Dashboard Creation: appdaemon.readthedocs.io/en/la...
materialdesignicons.com/
And if you want to read ahead, a lot of what we'll do in Part 2 will be custom skins:
appdaemon.readthedocs.io/en/la...

    Duuuuude... you have a gift! Great videos. Learning something new with each one. Your fun to watch. A bit fast paced, but thanks to the gift of pause and rewind, we can still absorb the wealth of information you throw at us. I had to subscribe. As a neophyte to Home Assistant I have learned that nothing is what I would call stable as updates seem to change the appearance or where to find items and how these items work. But heck, its great when things work and ..... well..... i wont mention how it feels when they don't.... Got to find Part 2 now... Thanks again!

    hahaha, that's what I felt like when I stumbled on home assistant. I'm starting to get bags under my eyes from the lack of sleep. But I can now say that I understand most of what I'm reading in the forums now. And I only have to watch the instructional videos a few times now instead of 20. I'm having a lot of fun with automation rules and notifications through telegram when devices are on too long or doors left open. 🤓

    THANKS SO MUCH for your videos... lots of information and I like your stile a lot... As for this video I´m so looking forward to create a totally super dooper dashboard with a 3D floor plan of my house (of course the JPEG will be done ina 3D tool) and hopefully be able to add each HA entity on top of the image so I would have a graphical view of my house instead of a matrix button layout, although I can always use the matrix dashboard for a mobile device but for a desktop or a mid size tablet wouldbe amazing to have a 3D image of the house

    Thanks! I've seen the floor plan style. I want to do that too. If you do it before I get to it, let me know how it goes. With custom skins for HADashboard you could do it, but I think there's another program that is intended to do that, so it might be easier with that one. I'll look into it and get something out eventually!

    FYI, the whole "semicolon for styles" thing you mentioned in the video is because you are using CSS to change the look on the dashboard (i.e. the dashboard is in HTML). One-line style entries look a lot like YAML, but they aren't, and they need that semicolon. Great episode, looking forward to trying this stuff myself :)

    I'm a newbie, not a programer. I watched lots of "how to's " on HomeAssistant (on pi3 )and did not find any info (including yours) on how to setup the mqtt to work on a local network , I am using a nodemcu to turn on relays and sense temp,etc. It took several weeks of digging ,trial & many cryptic errors to get the info needed to get mqtt running and the nodemcu communicating with HA. I really think the naming of groups, topics, payload, client, clientid, subscribe, enitites, etc are a real pain to relate between arduino and HA. So if some one could make a series for newbies , HA could really take off. Thanks for your videos.

    a trick I used to help expedite the "copy and paste" was to highlight the entities on the HA web page (with ALL fields) and then copy and past them into an excel file, then deleted the 2 "info" columns to get me a nice list of them without manually copying each one...I then saved it as a .csv file and opened in N++ and added the space needed after the comma to get the right syntax for the .dash file...hope this helps someone! • @DrZzs

    @DrZzs

    6 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! 1 - yes, any tablet. All it needs to be able to do is view a website. Even the cheapest oldest tablets can at least do that! The tablet I used for the video is a Nexus7 from 3-4 years ago. 2 - By custom UI, you mean for Home Assistant? Like arranging groups, tabs, cards? Ben did a great video on that. I don't think I could do it better than he did: kzread.info/dash/bejne/d6d21tt_ZdfAgZc.html There is a way to customize the colors (themes) I might do something with that. Someone else mentioned the floor plan idea. Like a dashboard but with a floor plan of your house with button overlays. That's one I'd like to do for sure. So the answer to #2 is a very strong Maybe ;P

    Thanks! I've had some trouble with device tracking. I've tried the iOS app and OwnTracks. I'm still looking for the best and most reliable method to come along. I think HomeBridge and HomeKit might do it, but that would only be for iPhone users, so still not a perfect solution. The next video is going to be a device tracker of sorts. Putting a D1 mini in your car that can control your garage doors when you start the car and when you get home. Looks promising.

  • @DrZzs

    if you're comfortable with the linux command line and can install other packages, then hassbian might be better. But I believe many linux-savvy folks prefer installing HA with docker instead of hassbian even. The benefit of hassio is the ability to do pretty much anything without every using the command line. With all the available addons it's becoming less necessary to be familiar with linux. That's the main advantage of hassio. Not being super familiar with linux, hassio makes a lot of sense for me to use. I also gear my videos toward newer users, and I expect most of them will be using hassio. Hope that helps!

    Great video - it’s really helping me a lot :) One question if I may - I have a template sensor which displays an icon based on its state. E.g. if it’s state is “Home” it displays mid:home In the dashboard it only displays the value of the state (e.g. Home) and not the associated icon Do you know anyway to display the icon?

  • @DrZzs

    @DrZzs

    6 жыл бұрын

    Thanks!Ya, I don't know why it doesn't seem to be using the HA icons (it should be...) Anyway, you can set the icon if you set up a custom widget definition. I talk about how to do it in the second half of the video. If you have questions that aren't answered there let me know. Make sure you set the "entity" or it won't pull the state from HA.

    DrZzs I got there in the end I played about with customising widgets as per your video but I couldn’t find a widget class that did what I wanted so I ended up dusting off my html, JavaScript and css skills and created my own widget class which I got to work Whilst debugging this I noticed I was getting an error with the mdi css not loading so I had to switch to using fa icons It might have been this that was causing my initial problem but I can’t check as I can’t find the source for the original base widget TDLR - I hacked something together myself and it works ;)

Do you know of any way to display the Dashboard on a small 7" touchscreen?

    cool! Thanks! We were just talking about this last night on the live stream. There are no restrictions to using any of this open source stuff in your business. That's the quick answer. The only requirement is if you make any modifications that you also make your mod freely available to others. That's as simple as posting it on github. I'm no lawyer, but I'm 99% sure you can use Home Assistant and any of it's parts in your business without any legal problems.

  • @DrZzs

    hmmm, for mdi icons you shouldn't have to copy the file to your machine, it should go to the web and grab it. Could something be blocking it from getting to the website? Another option would be to not control the icon in the Appdeamon yaml, but use the Customization option in HA instead. I don't think you can set the on/off icons separately, but you can change it to the lightbulb icon you want, then it will change the color/outline based on the state.

    Hey I think you would like the `>` escape in yaml. It will let you use the next indented block as a multiple line spread of whatever you desire, removing the new lines (vs the `|` ;) E.g. - my really really really long line with, arguments, and, stuff Vs - > ...my really really long ...line with ...arguments, ...and, ...such These are identical to yaml (... is indentation)

    Good question. I still use it, but I'm not sure I would start with it at this point. Lovelace is already a pretty useful UI now and much more customizable than it was when I made this video. Plus, you're right, Home Panel is SO easy to setup and very noob friendly. So ya, I think this would probably fall to #3 on my list, unless you're already familiar with appdaemon.
