Smart Cities: Singapore

Ғылым және технология

With little land, few natural resources and an ever-growing population, Singapore needs every assist it can get from smart city technologies. Computerworld toured the city-state to see how it's all coming together.

Im a 58 yo s'porean. When I was young lived in a kampong with bucket system toilet. Whole kampong floods whenever it rains. Mosquito infested and snake infested as well. Now S'pore is a great city to live in. Majulah Singapura! And may God continue to bless our Nation.

S'pore is clean, low in crime, that's why l love this city. Who cares its fake in some natures, at least they do something about pleasant it. Remember, S'pore is one of the smallest city in the world yet they doing good to prosper the nation and upgrade the environment. Look other third world countries still living in an nclean environment and lifestyles after decade and decade of years passed by still no improvement........

Love seeing things like this, people genuinely caring about their collective well-being and improving quality of life for everyone around including themselves. Our history has so much revolved about wars, dictators, people whose main concern is their own thirst for power, and it never ends well, wish we follow Singapore example in a global scale and improve as a whole.

"coding" is such an interesting way to view understanding mechanisms. Not many people will literally code in a few years with any likelyhood. The mechanisms built with languages like Java and Python can be constructed with many other tools and those architectures are what people should be thinking about, not coding as it exists.

been to Singapore two-three times and experienced the city life first hand. True it is an urban legend in terms of the growth and innovation it has sustained, and continuing to sustain. I personally know many experts in my field supporting my take on Singapore. As a city planner, didn't fell in love with the city. Felt there was something missing in the midst of all these well-planned, clean and high-tech urban spaces. You could almost read this in the faces of locals; most of them seemed not entirely happy; you can also feel a little bit of tension whenever you are in a public space. Didn't see much wildlife in the urban greens; it felt artificial. But for some reason, you cannot point out and say this is what they are missing; it looks all is perfect, but, definitely there is something missing!

    B. Kanishka Guluwita you expect wildlife and more nature ? Its a small country with very less resources instead of finding what they are missing we should improve our countries which are just stuck in corruption and ethnic or religious conflicts.

Durgesh Kinnerkar by wildlife i meant those mammals, birds etc that you usually see in an urban park. Did you know that some time ago, they had a campaign for culling crows? We certainly have a lot to learn from them, but, like you said it's a small country with a strongly controlled population. So, it may not have the same complexities experienced by the other countries in the region.

Squizzy Bollocks I currently live in Aus, and lived more than 25 years in Sri Lanka. So i know the two extremes. That's why i would rate aus cities above Singapore. They may have flaws, but the designed/planned spaces also support life like the birds, squirrels etc. and the natives. We humans are a part of nature, and have our own human imperfections that makes us living beings. If you try to make our cities 100% logical, rationale and orderly, you would end up removing the culture, the beauty, variety and the opportunity in urban environment, which i believe is what Singaporean cities are.

This is all on the surface BTW. The first thing I noticed about Singapore was the lack of emotion and communication in public. Everywhere you go, almost no strangers talk to one another. The younger generation also have less time with their parents, as the parents are usually both working full time jobs to support family with the high living cost. The child is taken to daycare, then perhaps given to grandparents to take care of. You can see this evidence by the almost utter lack of families outside in public just walking together.

You forgot to mention Hock Lee Amalgamated , Changi Bus, STC Trolleys, Katong Bedok and many others I cannot recall. I was based in Singapore 1956, my girl friend lived in Tiong Bahru later we married!, all the flats had running water and electricity. Yes the Kampongs were often poor but after having suffered under colonialism and the dreadful Japanese from 1942 to 45, Singapore and her people were lucky compared with many other countries in Asia. The Population of mainly Hokien/Cantonese, Malayu and Kling were all so wonderful despite the struggle they experienced, later I was back in Singapore 1967-70 then again 1973.76 and every two years I go to Singapore for holiday (Old and retired of course)Sadly, the population growth has expanded to almost exclude Singapore Born Peoples this is the fault of the government however, given the size of the island, it is the most intelligent of countries, and yes, financial struggles still exist and poeple work, work, work, but are generally better off materially than they ever were under British Colonialism and, looking at Indonesia and Malaysia, Singapore is STILL the winner.Look at Britain today, once ruler of the massive Colonial EMPIRE, destroyed by the Japanese in 3 years, yet Singapore people sprang from the ashes like a Pheonix.Be Proud, and look at the positive history.

I beieve I spotted MAXWELL MARKET, Best Chicken Rice in the world there, I eat everyday on my last trip to Singapore, I also recall Hill Street had Fatty Loh's Chicken Rice back in 1956/60 and again 1967-70. that and The Nasi Lemat and Daging Rendang are meals for a KING. NO where in the world can you find better food at realistic prices (I mean Proper Hawkers food, NOT the garish Fusion Rubbish for which the ''Wannabe Chefs' charge an arm and leg, ask one these clowns to cook Hainan Chicken rice and you'll see what I mean. james conor you seem to have zero idea about Singapore. It’s property values and returns from rentals have been some of the highest compared to any other city. A minimum 1.6% rental returns from real estate and living expenses has been the same since my birth. The country didn’t crash or anything... it’s the best economy to invest (through funds and bonds) for example DBS is one of the most promising banks today. With or without foreigners the economy remains untouched, it’s just the social repercussions faced by countries like Vietnam or Indonesia by these ‘(s)expats’ now has hit Singapore, this was unexpected

Most high paying employees are Chinese. Then of course there are those life savers who work in hospitals, ever notice how many Chinese people are there? Please don't be delusional!
