This made me really miss my pet chicken. Her name was Mrs. Cluck Cluck and she really liked to sit on my horse’s back, or my shoulder, or the ladder. Anything tall really. Sometimes I would sneak her inside the house and she’d sit on my lap while we watched tv. She was a cool pet.

I feel you. I miss my EggNog, who was also a lap chicken. I miss her soft feathers, her calming effect, and her slightly mulchy smell. I used to be so socially uncomfortable I could barely leave my house. She was more gregarious. We were gifted a stroller. That was the start of a wonderful relationship. She has passed on, but I can leave the house alone now. I miss her, but I don't need her to function. I'm so happy she was there for me when I needed her!

I had a chicken named daisy, she would walk up to me and insist on letting me hold her in my arms, she didn't mind my presence, sometimes I'd take her outside of the coop and sit on a swinging bench with her and look at our nice backyard. But she later died of an owl scare, and I never got over her death, she want even egg laying age. It's been almost a year and I still miss her. I remember my friend once saying that she seemed more than a pet to me, she seemed like my best friend. I couldnt've agreed more.

I miss my EggNog! She loved learning tricks, and was very focused, but got tired of the trick once she had mastered it. The crowd favorite was "find the queen of hearts" where she would sort through a deck of cards. Once she could find it every time, she began to attack it. After her tearing up two queen of hearts I got the hint, and we went on to colored balls She seemed very happy with new stimulation, but was quickly bored, and let me know about it! She was learning to play scales on a little fisher price piano when she passed on. (Red Comet, they only live about five years) Next pampered chicken will be a heritage breed, bought for companionship and training rather than egg production. Eggnog was very matter of fact about eggs, she would simply jump into her stroller and pop one out, even with curious children watching. It was the first time many of the tourists had ever seen an egg laid! Beautiful birds, and inspirational video, I have a whole range of new things to teach my next bird!

Those are the same hens we cram into battery cages to produce eggs ... their brothers went straight after hatching down a conveyer belt into a meat grinder or trash cans ... alive. This is really important work, although it might seem silly at first to train chickens.

This i why I wonder if we should take Chicken off the meun. These birds clearly demonstrate some kind of higher intelligence. I know some might say they are just taught these things but I'm not sure why that matters because humans are the same way too. This I believe is true for most ground-dwelling birds since they have to avoid predators.

they have basic traits of intelligence, but lack others, for instance they can remember where the food is and find it after days, if you show them an object and the cover it with your hand, they know the object still exists even if they can´t see it, or my favorite, i usually buy their food in plastic bags, after the bag is empty and discarded, they still look for the bag and try to scratch it with their feet, because after all, that´s how they find food on the soil and the bag is where they see the food coming from, they relate the bag with the food... but they don´t recognize themselves in the mirror, they try to attack that evil twin...

+Len P Nope, thanks for asking. They are free range hens from a huge ranch in the States, cared for diligently on a daily basis. They come to the workshops and spend short periods of time right before training sessions in these holding pens, as otherwise we couldn't pick the same hen out to work with each time for the learning tasks. They are essentially like a dog crate, just so we can put our hens up for a break from learning. All hens have full crops at the end of learning sessions. Water is always there.

That would be extremely unethical as a scientific venture, to demonstrate so clearly the intellect of these creatures only to then turn them over to have their lives taken from them when they don’t want to die. Why else even test for their intellect but to realize an ethical value? Don’t they deserve to live?

Check the Circuit Actually this is a form of enrichment for the chickens! It’s really good for chickens to have some mental stimulation, it keeps them healthy and happy and the chickens like to do it! Clicker training is all positive and doesn’t use any type of punishment- nor do they ever deprive them of food. The treats are just extra tasty little healthy treats they can choose to work for or not. In fact, if the chicken seems stressed or doesn’t want to do the exercise, the trainers are quick to notice (they are trained to read their body language!) and change what they are doing to make them more comfortable or give them a break. These birds are well cared for and I’m sure that the trainers invest a lot of personal time and love into working with them 🤎 I can’t imagine they’d ever send them off to just get killed, don’t worry!
