This was my save file. Cheers for taking it on even though it's not what you usually do, great video with some good tips. Small unit size is due to the fact that I am using a very basic machine (shocked the game even works on it at all) and anything higher would just cause it to 'explode'. Though I quite enjoy the smaller scale, reminds me of when I used to play Warhammer tabletop. Also, it was the Hellcannons that kept just squishing me, so interesting tactic to get them to use up their ammo, going to have to try that against the 4 remaining armies.

Changing unit scale is fine! I like seeing how you react to "abnormal" situations whether they are huge clusterfucks or not. Honestly I get a kick out of you fighting battles that are challenging and small as well - seeing what you do when it's 8 units vs. 15 instead of 1 stack vs 4 stacks.
it's fine occasionally, but few people play on SUS so less fascinating for them
Frankly I just care that you enjoy fixing each save you come across, but it would be interesting to see what shifts where in terms of strategy when going from unit scale to unit scale.
Honestly this kinda sold me on a small unit scale playthrough. While way different, I like how devastating some things are and would make a fun campaign.

Just make small unit scale videos if its terribly blessed and vastly different from what the fight would be on high unit scale. Wherever cursed or blessed, the only thing that matters is that the small unit scale vastly changes dynamics and the value of units. Keeps things a bit fresher

TY. It's a nice change of pace to have some variety in unit scale.
I think it's good enough to be casted from time to time, makes for a change of pace and content.
This all makes sense now. I went from TW:WI to TW:WII expecting the hellcannon to be just as good as before. The issue, though I didn't really realize at the time, was that the unit sizes were now about 4 times as large, and I couldn't just obliterate them with homing hell missiles. I uh... didn't do so hot in that campaign.
Use every unit scale. It helps us learn more
This does actually have me wondering: What unit scale did the Developers originally "develop" and balance it on. Because if it is normal scale then even giants become semi usable.

My current computer is so outdated that I'm limited to using small unit scales (saving up to buy newer hardware). It's definitely annoying to fill choke points or control walls with so few units, but I can still win legendary campaigns/battles. I absolutely hate hell cannons for the exact reason Legend mentions. Thanks for the explanation on the differences. I'll reference this video once I upgrade my hardware and can start expanding unit sizes.

What PC are you running?
i actually find that it's waaaaay easier to dodge hellfire cannon projectiles the closer you get, a bit counter intuitive but it feels like they have far less ability to actually track you, and the projectile is pretty slow so it doesn't have the same deadliness as a normal artillery missile would at close range
Cheers, well setting up opposite side of that ridge was smart close to reinforcements - like me some trees to hide and give some concealment otherwise to work on a flank but those crafty chaos types camped..makes for hard work for the cleaver girls
This was a fun mix up, actually

@@samurai8698 I am *pretty sure* that there is variation between those as well, it is just the easiest to see with the knights since they have different colors outright. Granted, there isn't necessarily A LOT of variation, but you could argue that's not too unrealistic.
A trick I've found works well with hellcannons is to keep your unit just behind the crest of the hill and move left-to-right as you're trying to dodge shots, which makes them more likely to miss because of the physics of hellcannon homing missiles - they can't curve quickly enough to overcome the curve of the terrain and often end up over-shooting. It's pure cheese but it works.
Very Much enjoyed this. I did enjoy the small unit scale. A little more realistic when a Giant\Stegadon runs roughshod over a unit of infantry.
It is nice to see these on small unit scale.
I'd love to see the occasion small unit scale thrown in, maybe a live stream with focus on a single entity force, like stegadon spam or the Von Carsteins Vampire spam, high Elf star dragon force. I think even LegendofTotalWar would find Skaven rediculasly hard to play on that scale.
Hey, difrent unir scale is difrent and keeps it fresh
I like to see the different unit scales every now and then - it changes the game, and I used to play a lot on small for years. Learned after a while that the scale has very little effect on actual graphics performance, so it becomes a choice of what kind of units should shine... I wonder what scale the game is balanced the best at? When are war wagons and giants balanced against infantry?
Small unit scale players are those whose computers can't run the other scales I remeber the days of Total War Warhmmer one when I had to do so
Now I'd love to see you deal with a lizardmen rite army with skaven on low unit scale.
Small unit scale live stream!
If Im honest seeing you a little flustered is the most fun, so take whatever battles make you most uncomfortable lol
I watch your videos because my potato pc takes so long for me to load the game I often don't have time to play. I'm sure a lot of your viewers are in the same boat, and probably have lower end pcs and are playing in similar situations! Hope you keep showing us some small and normal unit scales too!
Go for it, small unit scale seems like fun.
Hey legend, for serving the cheesy 'wasting-the-enemies-ammo-trying-to-hit-a-moving-target' dish, I've found the best way to avoid damage from the "heat seeking" variant (doom diver, hell cannon) is to run a dude 'just' inside their max distance, then immediately run the opposite direction. The projectiles loose all their altitude at that distance and just hit the ground short!
"small unit scale is extremely silly" *Camera pans to me, laughing maniacally because I play this game on a 5 year old laptop and just last night realized my laptop can run the game with large unit scale* All the pain. All the memories... they'll all be gone soon.
i play larg or ultra depending on the race but i do like the idear of small it kinda fits the cutscreens where u see the single entities ripping thru mobs like there paper
Imagine if you were given the order to just run back and forth in front of the enemy army while getting shot at
Terradon rider with 1 hp going alone vs the whole caos army must have said: I didnt hear no bell...
I enjoyed the small unit scale nice change of pace from the usual battles.
More things to consider about unit scale are the splash attacks of monsters and some units, and animations too. Not just the raw stats and models.
I had no idea there was a unit scale in this game until I watched this video. It feels so much better having an actual army
I like seeing small unit scale, it spices things up for sure
Like you said, it is a totally different game. It's nice to see that every once in a while. Certainly the big battles seem more epic as opposed to tiny skirmishes, but it's not so bad in small doses.
I genuinely think that the ubersreik 5 would decimate these chaos armies at this unit scale. Fucking peanuts...
I use small unit for one reason only, my computer old computer had trouble handling it on the larger scale. Unit scale, like everything else that affects video processing is pulled back to minimum. So I make do with small scale until I have a better computer.
getting real Dark Omen vibes from the small unit sizes.
It's nice to see some diversity on that matter, like I tried Small unit scale Scaven and the meta shifted quite a bit: Flayers are 10 times better than wheels, rating guns are a nightmare and never fight lizard men and empire with luminarc they one-shot every lord/monster on very hard/legendary difficulty. EDIT:And lore of Plague is better that Ruin, it's vortex spell got me 400 kills on a siege once(still small unit scale) Another Edit: As much as you're saying that infantry is trash, I got to tell you: A unit of Stormvermin got me more time so the artillery could shoot, than a warlock master that got oneshotted by a feral bastilodon
Never underestimate a solid tree between point A and point B. Hellcannons fire one big, sloppy projectile. You can often drain their ammo with very little risk by forcing them to fire through a forest while their rounds keep hitting trees. That forest on the right side at the start may have been pretty useful for that.
i think the best way to balance for small unit scales would be to keep all hp values the same and buff weapon strength inversely with unit size change; would probably not be perfect, but wuld get close; single entities would always be the exact same stat-wise, while multi-unit armies would have incrrased dmg and HP on every entity (think; 50% model count=200%HP and WS per model) things would not be exactly the same across unit sizes, but they'd be a hell of a lot more similar.
different unit scale means different dynamics and different dynamic means diversified content surely, could be fun to see more small scale unit battles just cause its different tactics involved
Suggested solution: - Units: Keep certain total stats of a unit in large scale, and divide it among the entities in smaller scales (except for leadership, speed, etc). Which also mean single entity units' stats are unchanged Example: Archer in large scale: *120* entities, *12000* HP (100 for each entity), *20* weapon strength (*2400* weapon strength in total). Now convert it in small scale: *30* entities, *12000* HP (400 each), 80 weapon strength (still 2400 in total) - Spells: Smaller casting area, with the same total damage. Direct casting spells unchanged. Example: Vortex in large scale: 30m wide, deals 12000 damage in total over the course of 10 seconds, which is 40 damage per second per 1m of its diameter. In small scale: 7,5m wide, still 12k damage and 10s, which is about 160 dps/m
Small unit scale is an interesting change of pace!
I dont mind watching small or normal unit scale at all. I find the variety somewhat refreshing
Small is fine, as long as the battle is an interesting one, particularly if its one where the unit scale difference has a significant impact on how you play the battle.
Normal unite scale single unite can be easy deal with if fallow Slayer guides Mostly is take a riffle or anti-large and focus them down Point of normal unite scale to make fights faster and make battles more strategy/power for a win besides using Lord sniping planning
Small scale is like the board game but in real time.
This should be renamed into TotalWar skirmish-hammer
Legend of total Smallfare!
I like the change of pace randomly doing a small because it's so different. But definitely not a common video to do, in my opinion.
The fun part of this series is finding novel ways to fight what should be an unwinnable battle, it's like watching a speedrun almost, where you use the mechanics of the game in silly ways to play. In small unit battles there'd be different tactics, and those tactics would be fun to watch, for example, in small unit scale it's almost 100% of the time worth your effort to manually aim some cannon shots, since it can take out 1/3rd hp of a hero or lord. It's a different game sure, but the game is still a fun one in a non traditional sense.
Small unit scale is actually quite fun, the pace is good and it's seems more realistic as most of the battles are actually was not that massive. It is believable that most of the conflicts were resolved in a series of small skirmishes and not in massive clashes
I don't think I would want to watch a campaign in small scale but I like the disaster battles. It's different and interesting.
