Small Town USA: Philippi West Virginia
Philippi West Virginia is the next town in my Small Town USA series. Philippi is a special town to me as I spent quite a bit of time there growing up. Dad went to the clinic there every couple weeks and I usually went along. The history and memories of the town made this a special day for me. It is the site of the first land battle of the Civil War. We also got a surprise tour of the courthouse. Thanks to Dave for tagging along.

My parents met at Alderson Broaddus in 1957 They loved it there. Very sad that West Virginia lost another educational Resource. I love West Virginia but can never find a job Now I'm in Florida. A wonderful state with many wonderful people.

That is so cool your parents met there. I have some family members who went to Alderson Broaddus and they loved it. I also hated to see it close. You’re right, it is a wonderful state and the people are great. I was blessed to get a teaching job in the state and now I teach West Virginia history. Thank you for sharing your story. I love to hear about connections to the places I visit.
I just recently had an Army unit reunion just outside of Phillipi a few days ago at the Warner Lodge, was in the area about 4 days. Me and the wife drove into town to check it out as we like exploring small towns. We ate at the diner, got some ice cream, went over the covered bridge, explored the college and drove around. Neither one of us could figure out what that big building on the hill was, learned in your video it was the clinic. The bones of a nice little downtown are there, but it needs a lot of work and TLC. Lots of empty and rundown/unkept buildings. Not really anything there to bring someone back. As we left the reunion we explored the town of Buckhannon. We didn't spend a whole lot of time there, but it was a really nice little downtown area and we would go back there to spend some time.

Thank you watching. Philippi has a special place in my heart. I spent quite a bit of time there growing up. I would love to see the buildings filled again. The college is closing in December. They do have a really cool museum in town which I also have a video of on my channel. It is a town that has a great history. The old clinic was a building that I was in many times. The town of Buckhannon is a great area. We hope to get there in the future to do a video on it.
My family lives up on Union. My cousin Henry helped rebuild the bridge. Jacob and William Daugherty came there in 1851. They both were a part of the Battle of Philippi. Jacob is my great grand dad. He fought for the union, William fought for the confederacy. William was captured and taken to Chillicothe Ohio POW camp. Jacob went and broke him out. Brother vs brother..lol.

Thanks for the great information. I love hearing the history. I tell my students that brothers fought for different sides but this is the first time someone told me about it through their family history. Thanks again for sharing.

Your welcome. Thank you for watching.
I used to live in Philippi during the 1970's. Used to shop G.C. Murphy's all the time. Nice sized store that also had a downstairs section as well. I'm kind of surprised no one went into that spot after they closed shop. Whenever that was. Sad to see the clinic gone. I also used to go there all the time as a kid. I certainly miss my old stomping grounds. Thanks for the video and the memories.

Your welcome. They did build a new clinic along the road going to Clarksburg but the old one had so many memories for me. Hopefully someone will eventually use the old G.C. Murphy building. I am happy that this video brought back memories to you.
My dad's family is from Philippi. I haven't been there in probably 40 years.

Lived in Philippi in the mid-seventies. Well, up the hill a little in Mansfield, next to the United Methodist Church. We'd go to church at St. Elizabeth's and eat lunch at Mellie's. Wow. Big day was going to the mall in Fairmont. I remember going to the Philippi Clinic.

Also remember the night that Old Main burned down. And bought models and my first record (Kiss Alive II) at Murphy's. Wow so many memories.

Great memories. Philippi was like another home when I would go with mom and dad. I think the mall at Fairmont was the first mall I ever went to. Murphys was one of my favorite memories. A promise to stop there usually was enough to get me to behave. I was also a Kiss fan.
👍🏻
That build was a hospital and yes clinic

Every time we went there I looked forward to going through the bridge.
Ed, Thanks for the memories. My grandparents lived in an apartment next door to what is now Molly's (Baughman's Appliance, and then Newstand)., and we "doctored" at the Myer's Clinic, as well. -KR

I did not get the fire department in this video. I admire the work and dedication of the firefighters and I will try to get the department in next time I do a Philippi video.
