Your sense of aesthetic mirrors my own. I like including much of the sky -- even though it might be cloudless -- to act as a deliberate empty space for many of my compositions.

Todd, thank you for making this thoughtfull and informative film about how you make your photographs. I wouldn't worry about other photographers photographing churches, your images are definitely worthy of a book. We all work differently, and I am keen to learn why you choose to shoot handheld for every shot? You talk about film photography slowing you down, which it does but wouldn't a tripod offer many benefits? There's no hurry after all.

Hi thanks for the note. I actually often do work with a tri-pod as well, I realized that I have not shown it that often in my KZread videos mainly because I am trying to get a lot filmed in a day for the video. I can only slow down do much. When you are trying to shoot and film yourself, a couple of tri-pods becomes a juggling act. ;-)
Beautiful results! While Ontario has its share of small out of the way communities, they are far closer together than those out in the West. At least in Southern Ontario. I aim to try and explore more of the backroads this year!

For sure. I love southern Ontario as well. I’ve worked there but have never spent time there for myself. Perhaps when this is all over!
Interesting project, great music choice! I think it would be interesting to go even deeper into the history of the prairie towns and discover and locate the descendants of those native peoples displaced by the immigrants (who themselves have now left in pursuit of something greater). A portrait series of those people and a sense of the stories they may have passed down.

Nice shots! So when metering you spot meter the snow, and then overexpose by 2 stops of that reading?
@toddkorolphoto
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, so if my spot meter reading it 1/125 @ F/22, then my Actual exposure is 1/125 @ F/11.
You should use the waist level finder, it'll save your back. Well made movie btw.
@toddkorolphoto

I have one, I use it. All depends on what I am shooting and how. 😉
Wonderful work, I love your aesthetic and subject matter. You are using that Hassy for what it was made for. Living in Florida makes me very ignorant about snow. My question is you open up two stops to capture the detail in the white snow? I would lean toward under exposing the snow. What am I missing?
@toddkorolphoto
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! If you take a meter reading off of snow and used that reading, the snow would turn out Grey. A meter reading averages out your exposure and the snow would trick the meter. So if the meter reading is 1/125 @ F/22 off the snow, the snow turns out great. If you change your exposure to 1/125 @ F/11, the snow would then turn out lighter and whiter. Thanks for watching.
Hi, when are you using the light meter in incident mode and when in reflected mode ?

Great photos and video. Thank you. Quick question. It looks like you are shooting with an original non T* C 80mm but it appears you also have a newer CF version. Do you pick one over the other or why shoot with the old one over the newer model? Also the A-12 back has what looks like an ISO dial on it but you are shooting a 500CM. I haven't seen an A-12 like that. What is the story with that? Thank you and thanks for making these really wonderful videos.
@toddkorolphoto
2 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for watching. Yes I have an old non T star lens, but it was getting pretty old and had a lot of focus play on it and just generally getting harder to use, although still super sharp. I came across a new CF version for a very good deal so I bought that, and that is my primary 80-mm lens now. The back is from the 200 series cameras, although they work just as well on the 500 series.
@mjgreeneaudio
2 жыл бұрын
@@toddkorolphoto Thank you. I didn't know that about the 200 series camera backs. I also have an old 80 C lens that has never been great since I bought it with my original Hasselblad. Had it rebuilt twice and operationally it is fine, but I think the glass has been tampered with or maybe dropped at some point. It just isn't as sharp as my 50 and 150mm lenses. I also bought an 80mm CF and it was a night and day difference. Thanks again, and I look forward to future photos and videos.

Beautiful interesting work you are creating. I'm doing old white/wooden churches in the southern US primarily, and other architectural structures I find fit the genre with my Linhof 4x5, Hasselblad 500 CM, and interspersed with some digital. They have to interest me, I don't record them for documentation purposes. The title of the video led me to expect portraits. But all the images are of buildings and deserted places. Do you photograph the people living here?

Why only 2 stops for snow? Why not 3 of maybe even 4? Is it because of the film you are using?
@toddkorolphoto
3 жыл бұрын
There is an interesting article on that I will have to find it, but essentially so I can hold the detail in the snow. If I go up to 4 stops, there would be no detail at all left in the highlights, and snow has texture, and even shadows, I am trying to capture that.

Opening your aperture by two stops seems like it would make your photos overexposed and too blown out.

That is because you are metering off the snow which is white. If you meter off the snow the snow and use that meter reading the snow will be grey. That's why you have to open the aperture up.

Firstly, I have watched 1 min 48 and notice you have a neck strap on your camera, why isn't it around your neck. Like that it's a liability as you can catch it on things and your camera can be torn from your hand. Apart from that it is useless hanging down and getting in the way. You bought it to keep your camera safe, so use it.
