In my rental apartment, my kitchen is really small, but if you have ever fallen down the kitchen organization rabbit hole on Pinterest like me, you've dreamed of having an organized and aesthetically pleasing kitchen. That said, a lot of the products available to achieve this aesthetic can be quite pricey! I found out a super simple way to match the vibe that wouldn’t break the bank!

My favourite thing about Rachael's videos is that they're for rental homes! Kelsey and Becky's house content is awesome but not always relatable, so its nice having Rachael to balance that out on the channel!

@@CaliMel184 I would respectfully say that’s definitely an opinion and not a fact. Like they say… another man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Her channel, her style, I personally love her ideas and wouldn’t think all of her videos/decor is labeled something as dramatically labeled as “awful” but ok

For those that don’t want to DIY, soap holders from thrift stores make great sponge holders as well. I have a vintage one with ridges that helps keep it from sitting in a pool of water.

finally. a small kitchen that actually is a small kitchen! too often people call their kitchens small and to my NYC eyes, its the size of a bedroom! i also love all the zero waste tid bits that just happened to be stuck in there. i also try to live zero waste and it's so hard but you have to keep reminding yourself that it's not about being perfect and if everyone did it imperfectly, the world would be a better place. thanks for all the tips Rachel!

Big same- this kitchen is STILL huge to me lol, but it actually counts as small. It’s crazy how much the open concept sparse grey Studio McGee farmhouse McMansion has corrupted our idea of room size lol
I love that you thrifted your storage containers and filled them at the bulk food place! Excellent work all round. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Loved every single hack shown. I’m really enjoying the variety Rachel is bringing to the channel and genuinely look forward to her videos 😊

Thank you for featuring sustainable bulk grocery shopping. I hate that so many influencers with “aesthetic storage containers” just buy stuff in its regular packaging, then transfer it over to the containers, thus creating more waste!
Looks great! I do have one suggestion though --- since often nuts don't get used a lot (and can go rancid quickly in "inside" temperatures), I keep mine in the freezer. They stay fresh basically forever in there.
@tikusblue

I hate the taste of stale nuts so I do the same.
The CAT 😻 Whiskey should be like Danny and make regular appearances!! Also… Beautiful results and great hacks !!
one thing though if you store your food in glass jars make sure it's not light sensitive. lentils and nuts especially benefit from not being stored in light or in containers that don't let much light through. my grandparents have a walnut tree and we get lots of walnuts which we then crack and freeze so the omega 3 and other essentials don't get lost and the nuts don't go bad before we can use em all up :)
I love how the different styles makes every single one of their projects and homes unique. You can actually see their personalities through that.
Love form with function. As a Sustainability consultant, I also appreciate the "Do what you can" attitude. Thanks Rachel.

👏🏽Hooray for BULK shopping! I started shopping for my bulk goods like that (bringing my own glass containers) 30 years ago. You’re so fortunate to have an entire store dedicated to that sustainable option. Love you Canada; wish we were there. Your kitchen looks great, Rachel.
Think about load (force), the shelf risers should have been made with the topper on top versus the top load only being supported by 4 screws....does that make sense? Some dishes are heavy especially over a long span...it will dip over time (plus it would look better to not see the endgrain on the top ends.
My cat has that same look lol like “I’m done with the pets, but you’re enjoying it, so I’ll just lay here til you stop”😂😂
The editing and music are chef's kiss! I am so glad I found The Sorry Girls channel a few months ago. Now I have all this amazing content to watch back :)
Rachael fits in nicely with the OF sorry girls! Makes me so happy she’s so cute!
The shelves and jars with bulk goods look awesome, love the door knobs on your island too. I prefer the wood shelf lifters over the see-through plastic ones you see often! I was curious as to the total price of all these changes, it would have been cool to hear the amount spent but that's a small detail :) awesome job Rachael!
really love the small diys versus large unobtainable DIYS (even those are fun to watch too!) Love your videos Rachel
These DIY's are so great and easy to adapt to anyone's needs, thank you! I recently started making trips to bulk barn with my jars in tow and it's been a game changer!! So happy to see you pushing this option for affordability as well as sustainability. Your kitchen looks beautiful Rachael!!
You struck gold with all of those jars at the thrift store! Thank you for the tips!
I love the tip to bring out things you love like dishwater and put away unsightly things, it’ll make the space much more enjoyable. Hopefully it doesn’t get dusty lol!
I'm definitely going to make my own dish risers from now on - can't beat paying only $12 for a slab of wood and getting it cut for free at home depot versus paying $30 for cheaply made ones off amazon!

small changes but defs made a big difference!
Sunday is my bulk barn day! Love how they have that program!
Sometimes stuff at bulk barn is so much more expensive than buying at the grocery store. E.g. confectioners sugar. I was super disappointed because they have giant bins out around xmas time. Their snacks are the best for portion control though, you can just get a few goodies instead of having a giant bag of it.
@winnielou8206

I agree, sadly they can be ver, espensive. One idea is to see what gets sold packaged in paper (like sugars and flour) compared to plastics. Obviously no packaging is ideal, but if thst is not affordable, cutting down on plastic packaging is a good step.
The changes are fabulous and suit your needs 💯
I LOVE seeing how people interact with their pets, especially as a cat mum. If I see your cat letting you rub it's belly - instantly tells me all good things about you. A trustworthy, loving, kind person
always loves rachel diy's
One of the small things I recently did for my sustainability practice is get a compost bin! Now the only thing going into my trash is non-recyclable materials. I really appreciate the ideas here for tiny kitchens. Going to use some of these ideas for my own space

Pepper in the Clay!? Huh..... interesting! 😊👍 Never made anything from clay that needed to bake. A "smiley face" plaque when I was in grade school is one thing that I did for my parents. I still have it. 😊 (And I'm 56 now. So it's survived for literally Decades.)
Such a sweet upgrade!! Love content like this
I have such a small space to work in my kitchen so storage is such an issue. Todays video is perfect 😊 Thanks Rachael
i wish you cut out holes in the bottom of the sponge holder for drainage, but that’s just me - sometimes i don’t fully wring out my sponge
I've made shelf risers like this from old bed slats. There's always a bunch in the garbage around the end of the month near me. Especially in the summer.
Moving the pretty things outside the cabinets is SUCH a smart idea! Definitely stealing that trick for my next place.
I’m a homeowner, but this was still helpful for inspiration because it’s a ranch-style home from the late 70’s with a small kitchen, and we’re already planning on doing a big reno in like 10 years where we’ll extend the size of the whole room outwards into the backyard about 13 feet, but until then it would be pointless and a waste of money to do anything expensive or super labor-intensive when it’s just all gonna get ripped out eventually anyway. So, little non-permanent updates can improve the space and maximize our small amount of storage (house doesn’t have a pantry) until then. Thank you!
Wow, bulk barn concepts need to be spread more. ❤
quick tip from my years of b12 deficiency... nutritional yeast is light and heat sensitive so if you're buying for nutrition reasons its best to store it in opaque containers, in your cupboards, or buy prepackaged vs. in bulk :)
i'm in loveeeee
Love you guys!!!
Beautiful!
I am so happy that you are a part of TSG team Rachael! I love watching your videos!
love it!
I have the same exact "kitchen island". I corrale all my jars in 4 big baskets. 2 baskets on top and 2 on the bottom of the kitchen island. I wouldn't suggest having glassware open like that bc it gets filled with alot of dust. Great videos and ideas. It's nice to see someone else's take on things that are exactly like yours.
Rachael has a dreamy voice 😍
When I worked with sculpey a lot, I used to leave it in its plastic bag and sit on it for awhile to warm it up lol makes the kneading less work!
So nice.
only thing i would have added to the sponge holder is holes on the bottom
Looks Great! 😊👍
Luv the diys
Those shelf risers would be much stronger if the top piece of wood was placed on top of the side “legs” and screws went in from the top
The new drawer fronts and handles really made that so cute, i have to try that!!
I am so impressed with your creativity ... I am about to hang some shelves and I like the idea of the raised mini shelves on the shelf concept plus I just learned this week that Bulk Barn offers a 15% discount on Sunday when we bring our jars in so BRAVO to you... your videos are always an inspiration
PLEASE do a DIY with old glass globes for light fixtures!! There are always so many of the glass globes at thrift stores but I can't find a DIY on how to make them into a pendant or sconce or anything! Always love the light fixture DIYs yall do
I was literally decorating my open shelves and wanted play smth in the background when you uploaded this video ❤️
Wow you gained so much more storage!

Great ideas
So many great practical ideas! Especially the DIY shelf risers. I am so lucky that I have a zero-waste store right around the corner from my house (in Germany) and you can bring your own jars or use the free jars they provide and fill them with all your food items and cleaning and cosmetic products. I am trying not to buy anything in plastic if I can help it, though I don't always succeed either.
I did not know that about bulk barn so good looking out!!
Yay! Tips to help us do DIY and decrease not increase our environmental impact. More of these great ideas pretty please! Really keen to embrace zero waste
YESSSSSSS rental friendly stuff!
Excellent!!
The only thing that scares me about shopping secondhand for cooking/food related stuff is that the store labels typically aren't on the things anymore. I got a cannister for my bathroom from a store and it had a sticker marked "not safe for food storage." 😕 The old rainbow coffee cups that people love in secondhand groups aren't food safe, either. I wish there was a way to test everything.

What rainbow coffee cups do you mean and why aren’t they safe? I have a rainbow mug from a second hand shop and now I’m scared ha

@Frances Ha I think it's the F.T.D. mug from the 80s. It was part of a floral arrangement and the mug contains lead. It was never meant for food use (which is absolutely ridiculous).

I actually do go to my bulk section first, buy everything I possibly can in my own organic cotton bags (you can get these anywhere online), even flour and sugar. The only extra work is transferring to your own containers. I have very little plastic or food waste now. Sooo worth it, and I get compliments from people at check out about how cute the bags are. 😊
I love what you did. The dishes would be a possible problem for us shorter people, but you are obviously tall enough to get to them. I am now thinking about where I could do the same thing for my stem ware. Currently it is stored in boxes and only used when we have company because we have no space.
Good ideas.
I have really tall shelves in my pantry and how much space is wasted bothers me so much I CANNOT BELIEVE that I never thought to just...make risers. Frigg. THANK YOOOOU RACHAEL
