As a fan of tile-laying games, this looks like a winner. Reminds me very much of a great two-player game called Akrotiri (which is SUCH a great game) but being able to have more people play and a few neat mechanics I'm totally picking this one up. Thanks for a great review (as always!)

I just picked it up on sale for $9! Sale and a coupon. Half way through a solo play. I made some silly mistakes, but I'll be ready for Game Night.

Hey Zee, how does this game scale? I watched the whole review and don't remember hearing you talk about that. I'm wondering how it works with 2 players. Thanks.

Great question. I'm quite interested in this game though it reminds me not of just Carcassonne, but of a 2 player game I have called Akrotiri that is a fantastic two player game. If you haven't checked that one out, well, you should!

Akrotiri is really a good game. Small Islands works very well for two players, because there are 2 black ship. So More possibility to end the round. The feeling will be different of course at 2 to 4. (and 1 of course).@@northernbeadle

Thanks for the extra info. I have this game on my Christmas/Birthday list for whenever it is available in Canada!!! Love that it can not only be played with 3 or 4 players but also as a solo game!@@contactmushroomgames9736

Ok, why is Zee wearing a Bochum Ruhrpott Cappy? That's very specific and I am from a nearby town, but there is nothing so special about it to know it if you are a american other than that it is near Essen.

Here's a case in which some precise rules would really make a difference. What exactly do you do in the advanced variant? In end-of-round scoring, having players score every opportunity that they can sounds almost unfair, given that there are limited spaces for houses... Does it go according to turn order, which presumably moves each round? Does it start with the player who ended the round by landing a ship? (Would that be too big an advantage, both deciding when the round ends and scoring first? It would also make the neutral ship pretty valuable. So I'd have to guess it's not the round-ender who scores first... or is it. Players would only get to do it once per game without the neutral ship...) I think Zee should've specified the rules relevant to this.

Hello, The player landing a ship is the first in turn order to score. That's not a too big advantage because you have to wait an entire turn without playing a landscape tile before landing a ship. And when there is not enough place for everyone on an island it's because the island is very small and so it doesn't score very much. Also maybe it can be better to wait that the island get bigger to score it on a next round. It's a game where timing and decisions are very important.

@@contactmushroomgames9736 Your welcome :D It's a fun little game and we like the fact you determine when things get scored and you don't give away to much to your opponent. And while we haven't played the advanced variant i think it will lift the game even to an higher place.

Is this better than Okanagan as a “derivative of Carcassonne”?

Better I don't know. Because, it's very subjectif. But, Small Islands is a "true" Carcassonne like, but deeper than the base game.

Thematic ties seems wrongly rated positive here. From the video it is more than apparent that there is literally no theme to this game, or at least I see no thematic connections between any of the parts. The aesthetics however could indeed be rated positively. Just a small piece of feedback for future reviews. Thanks for making this video otherwise! :D

Discovering islands with ancient temples and valuable resources makes you a explorer people respect and admire. Which is the definition of prestige. Different people value different things. Idgag about old buildings irl. But useful resources I deem important. Many people are the opposite. Some value both history and economy. Everything ties perfectly into the theme.
