Small Downtowns: Port Austin Michigan Tour

Ойын-сауық

Today, I am continuing my "Small Downtowns" series with a tour of Port Austin, Michigan. Port Austin Michigan located in the very tip of Michigan's thumb area. It also happens to be right on the Great Lake Huron. Port Austin MI was a very small town that had some features I found very interesting.
First off, Port Austin is a very neat, clean, well kempt town. Not all small out of the ways towns are kept up quite as well as Port Austin. Like most tourist type towns, Port Austin has shops, restaurants, Ice cream stores, Fudge shops, and small cafes. However, there is also a few unique things offered in this small town. For instance, the Village Green Shops was collection of very small shed like buildings that have been converted into small shops surrounding a concrete patio. Lights have been strung across this central patio from shed to shed. Things like small gifts, wine, tea, and sweets were being sold in each shed. I had never seen this type of market set up before and I really loved it.
Also, located right downtown was a large restaurant called "The Bank". The old brick styled building looked like an old bank that had been renovated into a restaurant. I was not able to eat at the restaurant but the atmosphere inside was very appealing. There were also a couple of other unique things such as an icecream shop/arcade and an outdoor bar called "Pirate's Cove" that was decorated with skeletons and pirates. Located right at front of town was a very nice welcome center as well.
The town wasn't the only cool feature in Port Austin. The were was a beautiful boat launch area, pier/break wall, and beach also.

Thanks for sharing this! I spent all the summers of my life from age 1 to 17 in Port Austin in the family cottage...memories cherished!A lot has changed since then, '55-'71, but a lot has remained more or less as it was.

Been living here for the past 8 years, it’s been so cool. The experiences the town offers and good people the town holds are so kind and welcoming. It’s a wonderful place. The place right in between the landing tavern and the pirate cove was actually a restaurant. In fall of 2020 I believe, it actually burned down because some careless smoker threw his still lit cigarette towards some wood they were planning to use. Yes, the small shops are individually owned and are usually open when the farmers market is around. You missed out on the Garfield Inn though, it was a house turned restaurant. President James Garfield visited his friend and thus the namesake. I’m glad you enjoyed our small town, it holds a lot of history behind it, even though it’s small, it’s simplicity is beautiful. If you plan on visiting again, try getting in on a weekend, right before Saturday so you can see the farmers market and actually get in the shops.

It's a bummer most of the shops were closed when you was there. Escape rooms are getting more popular. We did one a while back. We almost escaped. Lol. Those ice cream cones is massive. Yum! I love small towns like this. There's always so many nice people in small towns.

We actually have done quite a few escape rooms, I really enjoy them. It is an industry that is actually very similar to the haunted house industry. We have been considering opening some up ourselves.

The outdoor seating area used to be a restaurant called The Stock Pot, which burned down. It was a great place that was open for breakfast and lunch.
