Small Car, Grown Up Package: 2019 Audi A1 Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Since its birth in 2010, the Audi A1 has been a popular car, as it enabled buyers to get their hands on a car with the famous four rings on the front without breaking the bank, and now there’s a new version. It’s meaner, more aggressive to look at, and more importantly, more spacious.
The model tested here is the S Line, meaning it has sportier looks and equally sportier suspension - I.E. it's rather firm... Powering this Turbo Blue supermini is a three cylinder 1.0 litre petrol engine, which offers 160hp and 200Nm of torque. This power is fed to the front wheels via a 7-speed S Tronic automatic gearbox, although a 6-speed manual can be chosen, if desired.

Great review as always my friend! Definitely looks like Audi have listened and improved the A1 a hell of a lot from the previous generation! 🙌🏼 ... I just hate the amount of options on it 👎🏼

I agree. It looks great and drives like it too for sure. I spect this car on the configurator and options are way too expensive and abundant. The buyers will have to show discipline when checking the options list. I think, in this case, less is more, as with this car the focus is on the drive and the exterior design.

Done nearly 2000 miles in my 35 TFSI A1. I love it. Glad I didn’t go for the Seat or Polo. Though I don’t like the S-Line, I specced down to a Sport so I could have the bigger engine within my budget. No regrets!

Sports suspension is supposed to be firm that's the whole point hence it's only fitted to the S line and above.

This is a great review Aaron, but while on paper this should be my sort of car, I was put off by reports of the hard ride. I fail to understand why manufacturers are obsessed with handing to the point where they ruin the ride -- and my God, all those optional extras ..... too much for a small hatchback. I never thought I'd say this, but I'd be more inclined to look at something like the Citroen C3 or C5 just because of the softer ride. In fairness I am getting on a bit, so this car is not aimed at me, I know.

Nodge X The mean thing is the harsh ride comes with the S-line package, if you opt for the advanced or epic trims, you get the normal 'good' ride comfort configuration. On the more expensive trims you need to select 'drive select' option only then can you switch between ride comfort or sporty modes.

Question for you Aaron. Can you switch the speedo dials on the digital/virtual cockpit from the normal visual dials to the jazzy brighter sporty dials on any of the models or is this only if you have the tech pack extra ? Much appreciated if you can let me know plz. Cheers.

@@CarObsession I've got the 1.5 Manual and that seems to stall very easily. The 'bite point' seems to be much higher (i.e. longer clutch pedal travel) than the previous model. There is also a well documented problem with the 1.5 engine stalling and 'flat spotting', which affects models across the VW / Audi range. Not sure if they've fixed that yet. Maybe a software update might fix it.

Hi there, thanks for watching. I've not driven the Polo, so it's a bit tricky to say. However...the Polo will be cheaper, it's got more space, and as a music fan, I would quite like to have the Beats sound system. Hmm, maybe that wasn't so tricky after all 😂

  • @lloydvehicleconsulting

It's a nice car, but I think I would probably stick with the mechanically similar (but much cheaper) Seat Ibiza if I were going for something like this, as the A1 is just too expensive, particularly if one specifies it like this.

@@CarObsession, no problem at all, I am not averse to Audis having done a Q3 review already on my channel and have another one lined up for this summer, but with so much choice within the Volkswagen Group, I prefer to shop at the cheaper end... Some people will love the new A1, though, and I can definitely see why!
