Small Amps with Big Cabs OR15 and Laney VC15 through 4x12.

Музыка

These days we are spoiled for choice when it comes to low powered amps, but that doesn't mean you have to use a small cab. There are practical issues with large cabs but we wanted to illustrate how big two small amps can sound.
Here we use the Orange OR15 and a Laney VC15, two great amps and both 15 watts.

Both cabs together sounded great, normally I prefer the Creamback to V30s but in this vid they really complemented each other.. The Strat with the Laney was lovely. The PRS with the Orange was immense and that low gain Orange sound was pretty cool too.

Thanks Patrick glad you liked it. I've said it a good few times before but that Strat is great. I really love the OR15, there are so many sounds that it can do and it is so simple to use.

Hey, Zilla Cabs! I managed to pick up a used ported cab that was made by yourselves. Holy Smokes, even with just a lunch box head it sounds *OMG AMAZING*!! If I had bought new I would have gone for a Creamback, and this video has me thinking that may be I need a ported cab with a Creamback in it too. :) Keep up the excellent work!!

Thanks for that, I'm glad you are liking your new cab. Those cabs can sound really big with small heads, it is surprising how good small rigs are these days.

Thanks for making this vid, guys, so that everyone can hear what a tone even the small amps can produce with the right cab and speakers! I preferred the Orange with V30s at low gain, but creambacks at higher gain. With the Laney and the strat I didn't have a clear preference. Both cabs seemed to complement each other well.

As always the underrated Laney sounding fantastic, like you say could be a 'Boutique' amp with a different badge

totally, you could stick a different badge on there and people would pay two grand. Hit ebay up and grab a bargain ;)

I’ve never thought to do this...small house...smaller imagination but a 2 x 12 might be possible. Always love mixing. It’s inevitably my favorite tone. Big thanks to Johan Segeborn for reminding me of all the great sounds.

Both sound great, the OR15 just about clinches it for me. I really like that M Creamback cab, the V30s are great but pretty industry standard at this point, it's nice to hear the different flavour the M Creambacks give.

I feel like alot of people don't give small amps any credit due to how much a 1x12 gives to a tone, put any good 15 watt amp through a 212 or 412 and it sounds much bigger, I discovered this early when I had a pro junior and bought a 212 for a head I was purchasing, before my amp came I used the 212 and man it was way better bigger, cleaner and sweeter. People want light and small and I get it but I wish more amp manufacturers would go vox route and but smaller amps in 212s. Great video btw, even your small cabs sound massive so I'd say any 15 watt amp though a zilla cab would be killer.

Another really good inexpensive low wattage amp is an Epiphone Valve Jr One EL84 but no EQ so you really get what the guitar and speaker's are putting out Easily push's a 4/12 and w an overdrive that has EQ does the trick Good stuff guy's 👍

the creamback sounds really nice all around and the vintage 30 just grapples those mids really hard and it sounds great, the creamback sounds better as an all-purpose though.

Definitely like the openess of the Cream back over the V30 but they do mix well I've always loved the idea of two different tones of speaker's mixed together Also I feel a lot of amps could use a speaker upgrade Like the Supro BK12 or other good budget class combo's And a lot of vintage combo's as well Can make an amp come alive Point in case of an old Ampeg Reverborocket that I pulled the old speaker out of Night and day Plus easy to put back to stock if not happy w the results

I enjoy driving big speakers/cabs with small amps. Even with 5 and 6 watt tube amps in class A (single ended EL84 or 6v6) and it still makes nicer sounds. Even into high power cabs. Just makes it sound so much big on lower volumes. 1x12 can never sound and feel big on lower volumes powered with small amp while 4x12 makes it sound decent. All that said I find the mix of two cabs sounding best in this one. Especially clean version. But If I am to be honest V30 fall out of my liking although I still keep at least one cab with V30's in it, for the reference. When I make the amp it has to sound good on V30 as well. If it does not well you are taking a huge risk while so many people own only V30 cabs. Once you get used to a really good driver you can't fall in love with V30 anymore. At least I think so. I do not like 16 Ohm China version. 8 Ohm China version is way better for me. UK version sounds more like 12 65 or classic lead 80 or anniversary H30 to me. Kinda classic rock speaker. Although I adore Creamback H I really think Creamback M is for me one of the worst sounding Celestion guitar speakers. Sure that sidewinder and few others sound way worse but this one is specially irritating me while it does not sound good to me and yet it promises so much. So this comparation was painful to me sorry :( Specially PRS Orange and those cabs solo sounded not so pleasing to me (to be politically correct). While I have to say all Zilla cabs I have hear alive where sounding great and all of the other videos here sound good. This has nothing to do with Zilla cabs has to do with me not liking speakers and not being able to hear them alive. I bet in the room they sound way better. BTW I am listening with a sound card with 192Khz 24 bit and studio monitors. Sure KZread is using compression and stuff but other videos with other drivers sound epic. So ti is not the listening it is just drivers I do not care for. It is very hard to record what you gain when you connect 4x12 to a small combo. Like world of difference. IF you have even 50 watt 1x12 combo you own it to your self to try it with good 4x12. It is addictive. Prepare to orde 4x12 from the Zilla cabs when you hear the difference :) Sure 2x12 is enough and more compact and can get stupid loud with proper amp and proper speakers in it but you never get a feeling of a 4x12 without 4x12 no matter what style of a music you like.

Am I wrong, most of the time drummers are behind plexiglass, and there are P/A systems. Who plays gigs that needs massive amps anymore?

It's more a headroom thing, I've tried using exactly he same setup as they have VC15 with a 4x12 and the sound is absolutely perfect nails what I want but as soon as you need to boost the volume for a solo you run out of steam. So live I use 30W or 50W and they have enough headroom for the solo passages :-)
