Remember if you see someone unconscious in a slurry pit or area where there may be slurry do not enter the area even if you are trying to rescue them as you will likely become a victim as well. Instead immediately call 999 and if you can get someone who is properly trained or equipped to handle the situation and safely rescue the person. Then once the person is released from the dangerous environment and it is safe to do so then immediately preform cpr and keep doing so until the victim responds such as by breathing or opening their eyes or until the emergency responders arrive. There have been many slurry incidents like this one when a person was overcome by slurry and when someone witnessed them fall or saw them unconscious they immediately instinctively entered the area or the pit often without proper training and equipment to try to rescue them and tragically all to often they too are overcome by the slurry gas and die as a result. Remember in a emergency especially one with toxic fumes or a lack of oxygen or a confined space emergency before you enter always assess the scene for any hazards and if there are any indications of slurry or you have any doubts on if it is safe immediately leave the area and get someone who is properly trained and equipped to handle the situation. Remember the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I don’t understand how this even happens. Where is this toxic material stored and how is it possible to work with, without running such high risks?

Slurry can be stored in underground tanks that are under cattle sheds or open lagoons. The toxic gases are released when the agitation process starts which mixes the solids at the top with the liquid on the bottom and that’s how the gases are released
