    Some folks have rightfully pointed out something important lacking from this video: *Israel should not have been allowed to participate this year.* It was a mistake for the Eurovision organization to include them and it frankly wasn't fair to pass the buck to the other performers in the contest - socially pressuring them to individually step down of their own accord, all for the blunder of the organization. I don't hold any personal ill-will towards any (all) of the performers who chose to stay in the competition. They had every right to be there, but the Eurovision organization failed them in upholding their previously established precedent (with Russia). As canucks and far from the cultural zeitgeist of Eurovision, my partner and I had no idea folks were boycotting it this year. In hindsight, I can completely understand that decision. 👍 I do feel however that this is somewhat throwing the baby out with the bathwater - plenty of countries (such as Ukraine or Spain) had important messages to be shared on the world stage. Boycotting the organization is boycotting all of the artists and performers too. It's a tricky situation without a single clear right answer. ☹ For our part, my partner and I disqualified Israel from being in our personal Top 10 on principle alone. That felt like the most fair way to do things; again, I don't believe it's the fault of the other performers that Israel was allowed to compete or that they remained in the competition with that knowledge. I didn't specifically say this in the video because I wanted to avoid shining a spotlight on Israel at all, but it might have been wise to be a bit more direct about our feelings on the matter. I apologize to anyone who I might have let down with a video like this.

    Yeah I mean when you're covering a topic that involves a country actively committing genocide amongst other horrors, you kind of CAN'T ignore it. Thank you for addressing it here but the privilege of just ignoring things "to not bring a spotlight to them" on your small youtube channel feels more like an excuse to protect your privilege of being able to look the other way. This isn't "the thing ppl are mad about at the minute", aside from being what it is, it is also very likely going to be the predecessor of something larger a la WW3. The days of "avoiding shedding a spotlight" are over with Tik Tok and the internet, so now in an age where everyone knows what's going on you aren't doing anything positive to benefit palestine by remaining quiet. You are only helping the genocide to continue by not using what platform you have to speak out and also to just make it known you don't condone those things especially when speaking on topics directly related to Isn't real and their controversies/crimes.

    I appreciate this video a lot. I've been watching Eurovision for years and I must say that this year has been the most chaotic and frankly most depressing edition I've ever witnessed. With all the stuff going on behind the scenes and the absolute incompetence of the EBU (the organisation behind the contest). I'm Dutch so you can call me biased, but I absolutely believe Joost should not have been disqualified. If the EBU did their job correctly, none of the mess of this edition would have happened.

    Regarding Rim Tim Tagi Dim being "inspired" by Cha Cha Cha, Baby Lasagna actually didn't write the song for Eurovision. It was meant as a filler song for his first album, so he wasn't actually inspired at all. It just happens to fill in the same needs as Cha Cha Cha did. After he finished the song, Baby Lasagna asked a friend to check it out on their Google Drive (same friend is also the one on stage who plays guitar and does backing vocals). And the friend was like "you should submit it to Dora (their national final song selection show) and then go to Eurovision with it". Funny how everything turned out!

I’m particularly happy to see you putting Estonia and Armenia so high, especially Estonia which didn’t deserve its actual final result imo. And slight correction: Ladaniva is the name of the duo with the guy with the trumpet too (Louis), not just the girl (Jaklin). Also fun fact for Switzerland: Nemo technically wasn’t the only performer as they had 2 performers who had to quickly jump on and adjust the Y-axis of the disc off-camera (while the X-axis was automatic), which is really cool to see in the crowd videos.

    Funny enough, Marko Purusič, aka Baby Lasagna was completely unaware of Eurovision and Rim Tim Tagi Dim was simply supposed to be a filler track on an upcoming album. His friends convinced him to take part in Croatia’s national final Dora, where he was out on the the reserve list. After someone dropped out and he was allowed to compete, he utterly landslided the competition, not only winning the jury vote, but getting more televote points than ALL other songs COMBINED. And to then finish 2nd in Eurovision, beating out all the disgusting multi-phone Israel voters to the televote win with 337 points is a true cinderella story. He came home in Croatia to a sea of people welcoming him back. He was the one that brought Croatia their best result EVER.

    Why the professional jury is so important: 1. Do you want Eurovision to have serious artists and innovative music? - In the late 1990ies the popular choice was introduced. Then countries started to send mainstream songs or even silly performances to please at be remembered. Eurovision slowly became that cheesy event no serious artist would go to. - More, nobody wants to be judged by people that have no clue of the job. We are all professionals in what we do, we all hate it. 2. The public voting isn't the "real" voting. - Voting costs. One person, or more exactly, one credit card, can vote up to 20 times. Each vote costs. There are people having multiple credit cards that bragged they voted 60 or 80 times. - Movements, political parties, even governments can buy votes. Either to pay their members to vote or by really cheating with voting farms or bots. It all happened. - Some countries have a large diaspora. People living abroad often vote for their country, not for the song they like best. So, some countries have a great advantage. - There is pity voting. Like the voting for Ukraine in 2022 or Israel this year. Or politics influence voting, like Brexit or the founding of the European Union (Italy, 1990). Yes, in the last two years, the jury vote decided the winner but in 2021 and 2022 it was the opposite. I do not want the system to change. There is a reason why Eurovision became larger and larger since 2016. I do not want to go back to the times when the event was ridiculed.

  • @SlugginAround

    @SlugginAround

    Ай бұрын

    I agree with your points here; it’s fun to come up with our own rulings, but the jury system is a good system and helps disincentivize “gimmick” songs. Joost Klein would not have won Eurovision this year even if he wasn’t disqualified - the jury would have sought to that. 👍

  • @DramaQueenMalena

    @DramaQueenMalena

    @SlugginAround There are 37 juries with 5 members each. I can't imagine that there is an agreement between 185 people speaking maybe 30 different languages, from different backgrounds, cultures and music styles. All with their own strategies, some even from countries that hate each others. And as the juries change every year it's over 1000 people. Every year a conspiracy is suggested - nobody ever leaked anything. That's not possible.

With that in mind, in a year where many people who normaly love Eurovision are purposefully boycotting it, I'm a little disappointed to see a video like this pop up. I really appreciate you weighing in on the matter! All the way over here in Canada, my partner and I are not in the loop about the Eurovision zeitgeist and truthfully had no idea people were boycotting it this year. 😅 Obviously, I understand the reason as to why in hindsight, but I can't help but feel it's somewhat throwing the baby out with the bath water; there are several performances this year (such as Spain or Ukraine) who had important messages to share on the world stage, and boycotting Eurovision is boycotting them too, all because of wrongdoing another country (Israel) is involved in. It's a tricky situation and I'm not sure there is a single right answer as to how to approach it. ☹ Needless to say, it was a mistake for the Eurovision organization to allow Israel to participate this year. Their poor judgement then put the performers from other countries in an unfair situation where it was then up to *them* to take responsibility and step down from the competition, when it was the organizations blunder in the first place. What I can say though is that my partner and I disqualified Israel out of hand this year from our personal Top 10 and I chose not to feature them at all in this video. I wish I had been a bit more explicit about this in the video itself, however. I apologize if I betrayed your trust here, as it certainly wasn't my intention!

That’s why an E isn’t pronounced the same way as an F. The dance break seems to be filler for the lack of another idea. It’s “Eurovision gimmick” nature is also a bit of a put off for me too. I still really liked it! But there were better, more consistent compositions/performances this year that took the higher spots on my list. 🙂

    Slugger, I dearly love your videos, I respect the passion you display and your levelheadedness, and for that last reason in particular I want to share with you that this video feels like it is in extremely poor taste. The inclusion of Israel in Eurovision this year is pointedly hand-waving the genocide that continues to take place every day in Palestine, and giving attention and coverage to the event without at least mentioning that context feels irresponsible. Otherwise I have been really enjoying the more off-the-cuff videos on this channel!! :)

    I appreciate your sentiments here, and honestly I share your same concerns about Eurovision this year. My partner and I did what the hosts of Eurovision didn't and disqualified Israel out of hand from our Top 10 list for exactly the reasons you listed. It puts the whole topic in a tough spot though; there are plenty of artists and messages (like those of Ukraine or Spain) at this year's Eurovision that don't deserve to be thrown out with the bath water because of Israel. Boycotting the organization boycotts them as well... it's just a tricky situation with no clear right answer. ☹ Shunning Israel from our list here seemed like the fairest way to go about things, but I apologize if I hurt your trust by not being more direct. It's something my partner and I definitely discussed behind the scenes.

    @@SlugginAround I appreciate your response! That’s what I had hoped was the case, and I agree with the difficulty in ignoring other countries through a total boycott. I am glad that this was something you guys had considered and also respect the decision to not draw attention to Israel by making a comment on their exclusion. And, great to see an appearance of the elusive Punished “Slimy” Slug… Even in death… We are Diamond Slugs. 💎

    I'm out of the loop on the Eurovision zeitgeist and had no idea it was such a hot topic this year! I never considered that I would need some sort of disclaimer before talking about a song contest, but I guess there are plenty of politics at play in Eurovision, whether I like it or not.

    Haha, I'm honestly shocked Ireland ranked so highly this year! Not that I didn't like the performance, but typically metal does not do well at Eurovision, (see Germany last year). And Finland was definitely worthy of an honourable mention this time around. The first time we saw the performance, my partner and I were in stitches! 😆 But every time we watched and rewatched the performances to help form our Top 10, Finland kept dropping lower and lower; it was kind of a gimmick song that while fun the first time, didn't have the staying power we were looking for.

    It's really a shame that this is the year you made a second channel for other content, because another year I would have been happy to hear about Eurovision. I can believe you just didn't hear the call to boycott it, but you use footage of people waving Israeli flags & never mention their inclusion. I don't come here for politics obviously, but the ongoing genocide in Palestine is something that cannot be ignored. It's incredibly disappointing to see you not only enjoy & make content about something that is supporting Israel, but then not mention that fact.

My partner and I did what the hosts of Eurovision didn't and disqualified Israel out of hand from our Top 10 list for exactly the reasons you listed. I'm realizing now that perhaps that's something I should have made more apparent in the video itself though. Israel's ability to participate in Eurovision was a mistake on the part of the organization and I should have done a better job making it clear that I felt that way. It is a tough balance though; there are plenty of artists and messages (like those of Ukraine or Spain) at this year's Eurovision that don't deserve to be thrown out with the bath water because of Israel. @@SlugginAround Thanks for responding; it's definitely something that should've been upfront, but what is done is done, & I'm glad to hear it was taken into consideration anyway. I don't doubt all artists were talented & most performances had merit this year, but I'm of the opinion that none of them are babies, & they CHOSE to be in the bath water knowing who else would be there. Several participants considered boycotting even during the final hour before the event, & every single one decided they didn't care enough to do so. There are many issues in the world, but the time & place isn't always right for all of them. This is a case where the time was right for the Palestinian people to be the central issue, & no matter how important any of the messages were in the individual songs, all of them were tone-deaf by not ceding the stage, literally & metaphorically, to Palestine.

    @@Clockehwork I think that's a completely fair perspective to have, and you make a good point about them having the option to decline the Eurovision invitation. I wonder how much influence each county's government had in the decision making? Ugh... world politics getting in the way of what is supposed to be a silly song contest. It's an ugly world out there sometimes. 😔

    I genuinely don't understand your comment here, I'm sorry. Are we talking about a music competition or not? I don't think Israel should have been allowed to participate this year because of the precedent set with Russia last year.
