I have had some great fishing on San Diego Bay. I prefer the back bay from the Coronado Bridge back. Chartreuse 3/4 oz Strike King spinnerbait with willow blades on a slow steady retrieve is deadly. A 4" Berkley Gulp Shrimp on a 1/2 oz red leadhead fished in the deep channels on 10lb test line and a heavy action rod will put some big fish on the boat. Cast out and drift with the tide letting the baitdrag across the bottom. If you fee like you got hung up swing for the fence because it is a fish on. Fishing the eel grass flats with the spinnerbait on 10lb line or grubs on a 1/4-3/8 oz leadhead can be productive. Dropshotting the deep channels by the bridge on 6lb line and a 2" Gulp Shrimp about 18-24" up from a 1oz torpedo sinker can sometimes catch more spotted bay bass than you can count. You never know what you will catch in San Diego Bay. One year in January in a friend's boat we were trolling blue and silver jointed Rebel Spoonbill plugs around the Coronads bridge and ran into the motherload of legal log size barracuda. We caught and released so many fish we left them biting. I came back every day that week In my kayak trolling those jointed Rebel plugs and scored a bunch more of those cuda's. Your video brought back a bunch of great memories. Thanks for that!

That's part of it. The thing that sucks about San Diego Bay is when the day goes on and the wind picks up, so does the boat traffic, especially those f×@#ing sailboats! It is insane being out there in a kayak or a small boat and having scores of them bearing down on you tacking back and forth. It's dangerous. I found a place where you don't have to worry about that. Launch out of Pepper Park in Chula Vista and head straight out the channel to the flats where the no wake zone signs are. Drift that area casting spinnerbait and 4" Gulp Shrimp on a 1/2oz leadhead working it slowly across the bottom as you drift. I have caught everything from orangemouth corvina to bonefish, to huge halibut there. Biggest halibut was 34". Of course lots of spotted bay bass too. Best of all, no sailboats ruining everything. They do take off out of J Street Marina, but they all head North to join the cluster F*$k with the other boats and this area you will have all to yourself. If the tide conditions are right this place is money in the bank!

I'm a SD resident and fish the bay from my Pro Angler often. The key to killing it in the bay is to start EARLY. Especially on a slow tide with little movement. If you can start at grey light, then that is ideal. These are my recommendations...... If you want a day FULL of having your rod bendo, then launch from Tidelands Park under the Coronado Bridge. Work the pilings, especially between 15 and 19. There are 2 shelves that have been dredged that you will encounter as you run perpendicular to the pilings. One between 15 and 16, and the other between 18 and 19 (which is where the main channel is dredged). Use your Mirage drive and steering rudder to your advantage. I recommend a drop shot configuration. I sometimes use 2 hooks at once on my drop shot. You don't even see baitfish traveling alone. So 2 seems more realistic a presentation to me. Slowly do circles around the pilings. If you're facing the tide, pump your Mirage drive VERY SLOWLY to create forward momentum. Keep it a less than 1 MPH. If you're going with the tide, let the tide do the work. Push in close and toss at the edge of the pilings. The concrete skirt only goes down about 8-10' underwater. Then it's hollow with huge concrete pilings inside the skirt below that point. It's LOADED with QUALITY spotties. If you want attractant to stick to your bait, then straighten out a paperclip and heat up the point with a lighter. It doesn't need to be red hot. Just hot enough to melt cured plastisol. Slowly poke the heated paperclip all over the bait to create tiny, shallow pockets for attractant to embed inside of. Heat the paperclip as necessary. Make a bunch of them all over the bait. They will have ZERO effect on the action. Then rub the bait down with your favorite attractant. The attractant will fill up the little holes and stay in place for a good while before another application is necessary. Those are some of my personal tips. I've had many 50+ fish days by doing this. I've caught multiple species doing this as well. Spotties, Sandbass, Sculpin, Halibut, Barracuda, Bonita, YF Croaker, etc....
