    Thank you very much. I'm delighted to see I might be able to fix my fan myself. I do not have a meter to check current. Can I just assume the capacitor is the problem and try replacing it? Also, I wish you would have shown this "shorting out" process of the existing capacitor. I'm a bit nervous about doing it without seeing an example.

  • @HowToDoitright

    @HowToDoitright

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes you can assume it’s bad because that is the main cause of fan slow speed in 98% cases plus that’s a cheap assumption as capacitors are so cheap. Regarding shorting the old capacitor it’s just as simple as touching both terminal of the capacitor with a screwdriver or metal. You will be fine as long as you wearing gloves and safety glasses as a safety measure. If you scared to do it then I would recommend that turn off the fan and leave it off for about 8-10hours and the old capacitor will be discharged itself.

    I got a brand new Hunter indoor/outdoor fan that is mounted outside on my patio and it is not very fast on its highest speed. And the kicker is that on the specifications listed on the box, air movement rating, it was rated higher than all of the other fans in the $120+/- range. I really don’t know what is wrong with it. Hunter fans are supposed to be pretty good fans but this one I got is very sus!!!

    Thank you!! I had just installed some smart controllers that are paired with Alexa, and this fan was not going the fastest speed. So trying to troubleshoot if it could be the capacitor I realized that the controller can only give the motor as much power as the speed controller allows it. So if the smart controller tries to send the voltage for speed #3 and the fan speed is set to #1, you get speed #1. Pretty doh! moment, but at least something was learned there, and now if the fans die, I know how to check the capacitors too. Great stuff!

    I do not believe that you can check it with it hooked up. As far as I know the capacitor needs to be disconnected from power in order to get a proper reading.
