Slot car excuses #1 - Was there a problem with the nut on the hand controller?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is the first of a series of videos looking at slot car controllers. In this video we start to look at some of the things you should do to maintain your controller and how to fix some of the common problems you may find along the way...

I think controllers are the most neglected item in most racers pit box. Even veteran racers tend to ignore their controller until there's a problem. I'm right-handed, and have found that I tend to put pressure on the outside (right side) of the controller trigger as I race. So ... I spend a little extra time making sure the pivot nut is tight and tweaking the wiper arm so that it has constant pressure against the wiper board across the entire swipe of the arm. And ... some controllers have a little adjustment in the full-power contact holder and the brake contact holder that will allow the racer to make the controller feel more or less responsive.

one cool trick i've seen that eliminates the wiper play issue is with A) a floating trigger pin (it makes sure it sits flat on the pcb) and B) have the wiper in 2 parts with a pivot point in the middle somewhere, with a spring to always keep it going towards the pcb that way the wiper pin sits flatter on the PCB and it always gets pressed on the PCB, without having to "overtighten" the wiper (and increase wear) on the wiper board and always has a same sort of pressure/contact no matter wether you ride left or right handed

Thanks for showing this. Common sense really, but with contollers, you can get a little bit maintenancelazy.

Yes. It is often overlooked even though they probably get hours of use without being looked at.

I clean the wiper board and then place a 10 cent piece worth of WD40 on a clean rag. I wipe the wiper board down with the rag. Very smooth and have never had any issues.

I have a schematic and parts list for the potentiometer pivoting transistorized controller design…much smoother and a lot easier to tune

Hi Charles. I do like the idea of using a potentiometer as the trigger pivot but in the limited number of controllers I have seen with this design, they have nearly all failed because the potentiometer is just not designed for so much quick movement.

@@CATech1138 It is amazing just how much movement there is in the trigger for just one lap of a slot car track. Maybe wing cars would not be so much movement but on a scale track the trigger needs to be moved many times in one lap. On one of my club tracks it will be moved more than 30 times a lap!

I hope you boil that toothbrush before you use it to brush your teeth again! Seriously, I need to get some of those circuit boards, I just rebuilt several parma Turbos and i won't be able to again when the resistors die because they're not available any more

I have some spares of a newer version (the one in my current controller) that takes surface mount resistors and has other features such as a relay switch, brake switches, brake pot and anti brakes. You obviously don’t have to wire them all in if you don’t want them. Send me an email and we can work something out if you are interested 👍🏻
