Sloan Regal Flushometer | Diaphragm | Repair and Replace

In this episode of Repair and Replace, Vance shows how to replace a diaphragm in a Sloan Regal or Royal Manual Flush Valve. This applies to both commercial toilets (water closets) and urinals.
The bypass hole size is extremely important for proper metering of water. Continuous flushing can occur if the bypass hole is blocked. If the hole has been enlarged, it can cause short flushing.

    This was super helpful. I live in military housing with this toilet. Flushed one morning and it wouldn’t stop. I googled the issue, found this, and stopped wasting water. It was simply a degraded diaphragm assembly. These are easier to fix than a standard tank unit. Thank you, thank you!

    Thanks for the two replys about the bi-pass hole. I soaked every part of the flushometer in degreaser and water for three hours, after disassembling it. I disassembled the diaphragm completely, removing the two plastic rings, and did see two slits in it. After cleaning it and reassembling all parts and pieces the flushometer worked like new. Thanks.

    Very helpful video - nice explanation! One suggestion, if you redo this in the future, you might want to mention that when removing / restoring the cap, the pressure in unscrewing it can jiggle the tailpiece, which may then require replacing the O-ring on that tailpiece. It happened to me and I had to make 2 trips to Ferguson - one for the diaphragm and one for the O-ring.

  • @AmreSupply

    @AmreSupply

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you Todd! That is a great suggestion on the o-ring and its something that would have been good to mention more in these videos. When i flush my toilet, it all gets drained and then runs for about a minute before completely filling up and stopping. Does this mean my bypass hole is starting to get blocked? Or not really because it is not running and never stopping, just flushing for about a minute before filling and stopping which is longer than normal.

  • @AmreSupply

    @AmreSupply

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching. What is likely happening is that the bypass hole is likely clogged with mineral or corroded rubber from the diaphragm. It's likely not completely blocked but is taking longer than normal to fill the upper chamber, resulting in a long flush. If you try to clean the diaphragm and it doesn't help, then installing a new diaphram of the correct gpf should fix the problem.

    Thanks for watching. What you are noticing is condensation. Since there is cold water inside the pipes, its causing water vapor in the air to condense from a vapor into a liquid, which is collecting on the pipe. Generally if the flushometer valve is closed all the way there shouldn't be water running to it. If you have to constantly hold down the handle or the flush stops, it is probably an indicator that you'll need a new diaphragm. If the bypass hole in the diaphragm is enlarged, the valve will reset too quickly as water rushes into the upper chamber before the valve can completely flush. Did you replace the diaphragm?

    That was absolutely the problem. Honestly, I'm surprised you or someone else thought that changing the handle would do anything. The handles on Sloan valves do nothing more than bump the relief valve with a metal rod and the rest of the flushing action is all water pressure

  • @AmreSupply

    @AmreSupply

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@exoticcar5482 Even though the diaphragm is the most common solution, the handle is still a source of short flushing and is even mentioned the Sloan manual. Consider a handle that is sticking and doesn't push into the relief valve effectively. If it only partially opens the relief valve, you might see a small release of water leak from the valve without a full flush.

  • @exoticcar5482

    @exoticcar5482

    @@AmreSupply True, but that is a very rare situation considering the simple, reliable mechanics of Sloan handles. You can usually tell a good handle from bad by removing it from the flushometer, looking at the rod, and observing its response to the handle movement. The handle only needs replacement if a. The handle joints and parts inside are so stuck and/or corroded beyond repair or b. the metal rod isn't moving out long enough or with enough force to strike the relief valve. However, in general, these are unusual cases as the gaskets normally keep water out of the handle joint. A vast majority of the time, the issue lies in the more fragile rubber diaphragm. Not saying to not check the handle though, because that's the first thing to rule out. My point is that it is relatively easy to tell if your handle is the problem without spending money on a new handle that may end up being a waste of money if it turns out that the handle wasn't even the underlying issue in the first place. If the bathroom has another flushometer with a working diaphragm, it's even easier as you can temporarily mount the handle from the problematic flushometer to the working one and see if it functions properly. If so, you can instantly rule out the handle as the underlying issue and thus there's no need to get a new replacement handle
