    This is a fantastic video and am amazed that a 2cyl class 5 loco could ascend this bank so easily and hauling 12 coaches, it speaks volumes for the staff who maintain these wonderful locos now, back in my day in the 1950s you would never have seen a sight like this, this length of train with a class 5 would have been double headed, even the Coronations class locos sometimes struggled up these banks also back in the 50s these and nearly all British Rail steam locos were poorly maintained so never fulfilled their potential, once again thanks for the great video.

    You know the nearer your destination, The more you're slip slidin' away...especially if there's a lovely steep slope between you and your destination.

    That must be like the john force of steam engines cause i just seen something that amazed me ...iv never seen something if that size in general moving at a speed fast enough that WHEEL SLIP WOULD HAVE BEEN THE LAST THING ON MY MIND.....but i just seen going right a long an then its like he dropped about 3 gears an she tried to smoke them steel off ....thats a great way to see raw power like that ..

    That’s the example of the drivers being too hard on the accelerator that’s why they’re engines can slip like this

  • @TheStephengthompson

    @TheStephengthompson

    Thanks Scott , actually most of the slips in the video are on points where there are flange lubricant points hence the slip plus the others are nothing to do with being driven overly hard just greasy rails in not ideal conditions.

    Shap is not steep compaed to the Devon Banks, and GWR locos climb them without slipping. So, is it the particular location in a cutting, as with the bank to Churston, or simply the superiority of GWR machines?

    Great Western locos conspicuous by their abscence. I am of a certain age that I can well remember them in service during the 1950s and rarely if ever saw them slip unlike most designs particularly most 4.6.2s, the Southern variaties which could slip going DOWNHILL.

    Thanks David, yes I must say I’ve not seen a GWR loco slip when filming them up North but not that many have been over Shap in my time filming mind you .I believe King Edward 6024 came to a stand on Shap in 1999 and also slipped badly after the restart near Scout Green. Regards Steve

    Apart from the dreaded Shap flange-greaser; one day BR are going to figure out why steamers always 'happen' to slip in front of a camera, and that will be the end of it.
