Thanks, nice no-nonsense review of the practical pros and cons of each. I have also struggled with this and kind of resisted the traditional vest thing. Maybe one day I will also go for a vest. Right now I have a simple chest pack I have modified from a military tactical pack to suit my needs. Just as good and a fraction of the cost of custom-designed fishing gear. And then I have a sling bag if I am wanting to take my lunch and other stuff with me. This works for me now, but as I say I liked your review and will likely one day also go the vest route. Cheers

I am conscious that there is a chest pack option that I have not tried - a simpler chest pack - I really like the look of the Fishpond Thunderhead Submersible Fly Fishing Check Pack (quite a mouthful) - but, it’s expensive, and I fear that I will just swing back to my vest due to the improved organisational nature of the vest - as a small kid at school I always forced my mom to buy me the pencil cases with lots of compartments and hidden drawers - deep down, I suspect that I have a bit of OCD that the vest caters naturally for - thanks as always for your comments @michaelhaggensen3100 - I appreciate you

To each his or her own i guess. Great review but that flathead sling by fishpond is one of my absolute favorites! Very few slings on the market can even compare. One thing to note is you have to fully understand all the features and options it offers. It is abidextreous and i'm a lefty so that was huge for me. Another thing a really like was the one handed shoulder strap operation. That feature is awesome(some didn't know its there)! But the main thing i liked is how much it can hold and how easy everything is to access. Its very well thought out. Their are comparts for every fly fishing component. Great organization. I can fit 3 bugger barns and 4 MFC fly boxes, 10 tippet spools, leaders, indicators, all my weights, two waterbottle pockets and still have room to spare. But to be fair it seems more designed for Great lakes tributary fishing. So if your just fishing a small stream for trout its not going to be the best option. But i personally don't mind swinging it in front grabbing out what i need and swinging it to my back. I can see that may bother some but it is one handed operation to do so. Its way better than any lumbar packs and chest packs ive tried. But i havent tried many vests either so i really can't speak to that comparison. But yes i highly recommend the fishpond flathead sling! Fish on!!
