Slimming World Exposed: Does The Diet Really Work for Weight Loss?

Slimming World is one of the most popular weight loss diets in the UK, but does it really work? In this video, I take a close look at the Slimming World diet, including its pros and cons, to help you decide if it's right for you.
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐭?
Slimming World is a flexible eating plan that focuses on healthy foods, occasional indulgences, and support through online or in-person meetings. The diet is based on a system of "Free Foods," "Healthy Extras," and "Syns." Free Foods are low in calories and can be eaten in unlimited quantities. Healthy Extras are foods that are high in nutrients and can be enjoyed in limited amounts each day. Syns are foods that are higher in calories and should be limited.

I have had only positive experiences with Slimming World. People put pressure on themselves to have a bigger loss, for example - fasting whole day before weigh-in and over-exercising of their own accord, not because they are advised to do so. All of the issues with self-hatred, self-sabotage, starve and binge are a result of deep seated psychological issues that cannot be expected to be resolved by a weekly slimming group and a healthy eating plan. In my group people have small losses, big losses, maintains and gains, and no-one is shamed or told they must improve their losses. They are encouraged to stay positive and not give up. Fluctuations are normal, as are life circumstances that cause us to sometimes have a gain, we are encouraged to not see it as a big problem. The diet itself is a very moderate healthy eating plan encouraging all healthy foods and no food is bad or off limits, the syn system is merely a way to limit high calorie foods, which obviously we must do to lose weight. All the psychological issues you talk about are not a result of slimming world, and not every overweight person suffers from self-hate, self-sabotage, binge eating, low self-esteem, etc. etc. Some people do. Some have simply not paid much attention to what they eat and have put on weight over time. It is not all about what we look like, it is sensible to adjust the diet for health reasons, and the adjustment is to include mainly healthy foods. As for "intuitive eating" which is the new "diet", the reality is that our intuition does not really inform us of the truth all of the time, if it did, we would not make any choices that lead us to damaging behaviour, eating or otherwise. Not everyone needs a diet, but some people benefit from one and what is the problem with getting a little help from a healthy eating plan and a supportive group. As for the issue of putting all the weight back on, duh. Yes, if someone starts overeating again, they will start putting on weight again. It is not rocket science. If people have eating disorders, whether it be over-restricting or binging, or if they suffer from depression, low self-esteem, stressful life circumstances, then they need to address these issues, it is outside the realm of what an eating plan can help you with. Many of us are simply overweight.

I left today slimming world as I was obessive over every single bite of food I eat. I love the idea of eating healthy portion sizes. But no I agree it's damaging to me personally. 😢It's been hard, I left 8 pounds but I was so miserable, it made me very anxious over food. I don't want to emotionally eat, overeat. It's something I need to work on with Jesus he helps, but also acknowledging I need some sort of accountability. Some it can work, I support anyone who does it. Jess typing ❤

The slimming World mentality STILL effects me to today! And I haven't followed it for 6 years now! I'm trying to lose weight through normal healthy eating and exercise but the weight is not shifting, no matter how hard I'm trying, and I still get the same guilt on the scale and I keep thinking......why can't I lose weight myself? Maybe I should go back to slimming world cus it was working at the time......but I have to keep reminding myself of the crazy behaviours I was having, like starving myself and actually reducing workouts as I was worried about water retention for weigh ins and stuff.....I have to remind myself, even though it feels soo much harder to do without a boxed in plan, it is much healthier mentally, and physically as I can workout more and get fitter.... I remember a guy in class run a marathon and gained 6 pounds that week, and the leader was giving him grief over it.....its honestly soo messed up! And I can't believe it still effects me after all this time 😬

If you've read my previous comments Harry, what would you advise me to do now I've reached my goal weight? I'm currently studying a level 3 Diploma in nutrition and I'm absolutely loving it. Should I just take what I've learned and trust myself to just take away the stabilisers of calorie counting and macro monitoring? Xx

That's a very hard question to answer. That's why I coach people through it from their starting point. The big thing is understanding how the Unconscious part of your mind works and also getting rid of the black and white approach to dieting - so no precise counting where if you go over you feel like you've failed. I've got loads of videos about these topics but if you have any specific questions feel free to ask.

Good on you for exposing SW lies. Their whole thing around "syns" is stupid - 15 syns for an avocado, 25 syns for a tuna and sweetcorn sandwich (if you grab something while out), don't use unadulterated oils, use this chemical spray stuff instead as it's free. Plus the pushing of really unhealthy snacks - eat two of our own brand chocolate bars as your healthy extra! I hated the whole thing about group, it's like a cult with all the clapping like sea lions every week. Also there wasn't a balanced view on exercise - a hour's walk round the shops was essentially seen as the same as an hour's strength training. I did it twice, put all the weight back on that I lost. I found both consultants at two seperate groups awful and had clear favourites within the group. Strength training three/four times a week, plus MFP to track macros and calories has helped a lot more than SW ever did.

Fab video Harry. I've successfully lost 4 stone 3lbs using Nutracheck. I did join SW online just because I was intrigued. I lost the last stone, but not following their plan religiously because I was intrigued to see how many calories I was consuming whilst being under their 15 syn a day rule and bloody hell....some days I was eating way over my cals and yet had about 10 syns to spare!! I quit SW and I'm maintaining, just logging on NC for now until I get used to being able to eat a bit more. Then I'm hoping to take what I've learned and maintain, just tracking my protein. Xx

The diet really works but I think this is a diet very suited for Americans, especially because we need to switch off the junk and fast food button and the food is plentiful and appetizing. I’m one that suffers from emotional eating. I’m retired, life is calmer and the hectic situations have stopped. I’m a retired ICU nurse. I started on January 1st. Lost 12.6 lbs effortlessly. This second week, another 1.2 lbs. Nearly a stone and yes, definitely a TypeA personality. I know it will slow down, fluctuate but eventually, I should hit Target. Last time I tried, lost 5 stones, 70 lbs in 13 months. I know where I went wrong but I will say this, it is my fault,100% whether I succeed or not. On the other hand, I know that getting to Target will extend my life plus I will love its benefits. My 65th Birthday is on 1/22. Nice to celebrate with weight losses. No, I am not eating cake nor cheating. More important to give 2024 a chance to change my life.

@@emotionaleatingcoach I guess but they still offer it. I watched your video from start to finish and at the end I was left with a few thoughts . Many of the people on any weight loss journey will have a multitude of reasons why they are overweight. If people feel guilty because they have not followed any plan that’s an intrinsic challenge for them not the fault of any programme .i do t know of any weight loss tool that focuses on self worth before losing weight. Building self worth and learning to love yourself is a wholly different avenue to weight management. Yes they maybe linked but people are overweight for so many reasons . I think referring to type A and B personalities is flawed, given that the origins of this research were actually related to heart disease and was widely criticised. Personality types are much more varied than you suggest.

@@emotionaleatingcoach The fact remains, your video is full of GROSS inaccuracies about the slimming world process, their guidance, and plan. It looks like you have chosen to base this video on hearsay rather than doing actual research yourself. Where is the balance? All your quotes are from people that failed, probably because they did not follow the plan fully. In our group we have an 82-year-old woman who reversed her diabetes, I personally have had several pretty major health issues vanish. We have MANY target members in our group that have maintained their weight loss for years because they keep following the very simple plan and have plenty of support on an ongoing basis, a plan which is far from the restrictive diet you suggest in fact it opens a whole new world of healthier and very tasty food. NOTHING else in the past worked for me, my wife, my mother, and her partner Slimming World did. Again, if you believe your methods can truly help people, there is no need to de-edify others or what is working for them. If I had stumbled on your video I may not have proceeded with the only thing that worked for me and by now would have had serious health issues. If this video stops just one person like me beating their weight and health issues, that would be a truly awful. Did you consider that?
