I found the slime tubes quite good. I run over a piece of wire and had no choice but to pull it out of the tyre. I got the dreaded hissing noise of a tyre going down, but after spinning the wheel round the slime tube sealed it up.. As you say, the down sides are that the valves can get a little sticky and that there slightly heavier than standard tubes. All the very best and keep up the great KZread vlogs👍👍👍👍

Cheers John. I’m yet to see the benefits, but expect it this Autumn/Winter. If it means I can ride on and not get cold and dirty then all great. Cheers for the feedback😊👍

Great tip on keeping old cores for these. I've just gone down the Slime tube route - following a disaster with tubeless on my MTB. I managed to fit the wrong tyre to my back wheel and had to swap it. In the couple of days it had been on there, there was already slime in the valve. Good video.

Just got my first gravel bike and like the idea of the slime tyres so found your video very helpful..also like your mudguards on the Cannondale, I have no mounting points on my forks (Orbea Terra) so think they might work fo me ,what are they, they seem to have a robust fixing .?

I have the habit of turning tires inside out and inspecting them both inside and out carefully. That tiny cut in the tire may harbor your next flat. Dig with the tip of a presta valve. I carry a mini pump that can put a bit of shape into the tube. Once it's together it gets a bit more pressure and the wheel is spun to assure the tire is correctly seated. Next is full pressure with a real pump or Co2. If you're planning to patch your flats, no patch will stretch enough to compensate for that much discrepancy in size. Undersized tubes are much easier to work with though. Glueless patches though are hopeless with this combination unfortunately!

Always like a useful instructional video, cheers James! Have you ever successfully cleared a gummed-up valve? Or is the only solution to replace the core? ps. your commentary is good to listen to so I reckon you could scrub the background music whilst you're talking? could just play it over any non-talky bits? :)

You probably could clean the core out by leaving it to soak in some white spirits, I think, but just as easy to Chuck and replace😊 Cheers for the feedback.👍

could you get slime tubes that wide with presto valves if so where please? Those tubes are 28 - 32 but the tyres are much wider no? or are you risking it with thinner tubes?

  • @JamesSocialCycling

If you watch the video, I do explain the slime tubes on the gravel tyres are wider and I do change the tyres to a 700/32 Road tyres. If you look in Halfords they will offer a wider option. Hope this helps

@@JamesSocialCycling Thanks for this, sorry I missed that bit. I think I'll just try squirting some in to my tubes then. Slime do a 700 x 35-43 with shredder but not with Presta which is a bit of a shame. Very good videos by the way.

@@twobeatkick_swim my mate does that so would say it’s another way of getting what you want. That’s weird, my gravel inner tubes were 700/45’s I think as they’re 40 wide and priests. I’ve just had a look and as you say can only find Schrader. Thanks for the feedback and sorry I couldn’t help further. Take care😊👍

I can’t confirm nor deny that statement😅 But if you have it on good word go for it😁 Just do me a favour, keep some spare core valves if using Presta, as they can sometimes get clogged up and it can be a pain to pump up the tyre. You then can clean out the clogged valve cores. Thanks for comment and dropping by. Appreciated😊👍

Funny you commented, as just tried to pump up my 700/40 on my gravel bike as they didn’t want to play at all. Might look at going tubless on the gravel bike, as wider and bigger tyres. Again appreciate the comment and good luck with your tyres, hopefully with the weather change punctures will give you a rest for the spring summer. Take care😊👍

I'm a big fan of Slime tubes, got them in three of my bikes, and had nothing but good experiences with them, with the same exception that you mention - they can gum up the valve occasionally. The original tyres on my Giant were pierced three times while I had them fitted, and only on one occasion did I have to stop and put a little air in as some had escaped before the tube sealed itself. Since then I binned the original tyres in favour of Schwalbe Marathons, still with the Slime tubes, for some proper belt and braces puncture protection. Some folk have good experiences with tubeless, some seem to have nothing but trouble. For me, tubeless is just too much expense, faff and hassle for very little advantage, and I know what I'm doing with tubes, so Slime tubes are the definitely the way to go for me. The Topper is looking sexy as per usual I see ;-)

Cheers Mick. Appreciate your comment and hope you’re well. I had an absolute faff doing the tubeless, I mean it was painful, I even filmed it, nothing went right, so in the end stopped and deleted the video, that painful 😅 If these help me to keep riding and not get cold and dirty then win win. Cheers😊👍
