Slightly ridiculous sanding block
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This week I decided to make a tool less sanding block. this little project was a great weekend woodworking project. It’s made from maple, walnut and steel. Its a little ridiculous but i like it:)

There is nothing wrong with making it look cool and work well. You should be proud of it!
Brutal honesty on your self explained "overcomplicating of things", but still a beautiful looking tool.
I love this sanding block. Putting thought and creativity into shop built tools is a lost ambition. Well done!
For years I've just wrapped sandpaper around scrap wood. I was missing out. I am new to your channel but I'll tell you, you have inspired me to make a bad ass sanding block myself now.
I think it's awesome, both good looking and practical. Don't underestimate the value of working with good looking tools, it is motivating, especially considering how boring sanding is... Thumbs up!
Really like the mix of metal and wood, functional yet gives it an industrial look. Nice!
Another project on the list for the Holidays... 😀 Keep on your good work.
i think a craftsman puts effort into something that he or she will find rewarding. its complicated to provide simplicity to a task that you will do often. and every time you do that task, you'll be rewarded.
not over done. thats a grest little project that doesn't take a long time to make, builtvwith wcraps, and it'll come in handy all the time. i like it.
Very nice. Shop projects don't always have to be thrown together. You should take pride in what ever you build.

For a quite some time I thought that Aaron (Gough knives) had best design of sanding block. Not any more... Ryan, you nailed it with this one!
Slightly ridiculous, incredibly beautiful and enjoyable to watch! 😃

Love that you overkill build things. If you are going to spend the time building something may as build it well so it doesn't have to be rebuilt.

It may be an overkill build, but the end product is quick and easy to use, and that's what counts really. Best looking sand block ever!

Hey Ryan - GREAT sanding block. This is a project that if you need a sanding block in a hurry then you grab a piece of 2 X 4, wrap the sandpaper around it and you are done. BUT when you want to make a sanding block, this is a 10. It has cool looks and once you set the sandpaper, it holds the paper perfectly. This is on my rainy day project list. Good job!!
That is a beautiful and wonderful over-complication of a block of wood. It looks great, and does the job.

That is the most over engineered, difficult sanding block project I have ever seen, and I can't wait to try and duplicate it. AWESOME!!!

This was so satisfying to watch being built
Sweet and overbuilt, the "Shop Built" motto.
Complicated? Maybe... but the spring action totally makes it worth it. I love it, great work.

ridiculous yet really nice and very functional
It might be a bit harder to make but it is easy to use and simple and that is what makes the difference between a good idea and a bad idea. I will certainly be making some for myself providing it is ok by you
brilliant... and you will always enjoy using it... we need more of this.

Very cool the best looking sanding block I've seen. Besides if your going to build it you might as well go all the way
Great design!
I'm a huge fan of the sticky back sandpaper. They sell a metal stand/dispenser for it and you use it like a big roll of masking tape. Tear off as much or as little as you need. Stick it to a block, stick it around a dowel, or stick it to foam sanding blocks made for it (which have a sort of vinyl base for the sticky backing). You can also fold it and stick it to itself. It also has other uses, like sticking it places for anti-slip purposes.

And in case you're curious and can't find it, it's 3M "Stikit" rolls. 2 3/4" wide.

i'll have to look into that, does sound pretty sweet:)
If it pulls the paper nice-and-tight it's NOT over-complicated! Such a pain to get the paper tight with mine.
@Shopbuilt

thanks! it does do that well.
Nicely done.
I like the design, its a lot easier than the rubber blocks with the nails in a slot.

I can't ever get the sand paper to be taut in those rubber ones. It's always loose and ends up being less effective.
That's awesome!!
absolutely fantastic

yes, it looks kind of "over-complicated", but it's really in your style, and that's a nice thing, to have an own style! cool!
Nice design

Loved how much overkill it is, but that feeling when you imagine it and make it is alwys awsome !!!
Why CAN'T something like a sanding block be a piece of art? I think it looks great. Might make sanding a joy..... Might.

sweet build bro. go with polished brass for sides. chrome screws and maybe a little hard rubber on bottom. carpathaian elm burl for handle.
Great job indeed but...we need a lot of tools to make that "ridiculous sanding block"!!! :D
I personally just use a 25x75x150 mm block with beveled edges and 5mm thick stainless steel plate that i lapped flat on the bottom. I attach paper with the masking tape and superglue trick (Search greatest luthiers trick of all time). Perfectly flat sanding block i can replace the paper of in 30 seconds without tools that i don't have to lap flat ever because an inch of quartersawn walnut it not going to bend 5mm of stainless steel just through moisture expansion in a stable environment. I've been using the same block for years so it was worth the effort, it's still flat enough to level a fretboard, frets or lap other objects to perfect flatness. The beveled edges make it possible to get into the corners of work easily without damage, Sides are polished to avoid scratching work. I cut the paper to be exactly the same as the bottom of the block with a scalpel. I would make more sizes but i don't have any scrap steel laying around and usually that block works for the job.

when ever you see the camera shack, thats her rubbing her face against the tripod. so annoying.....
complicated, but I still want one.
Nice block and video man!
Nice!!
Classy!
amazing
Over engineered, over designed and that is only a couple of reasons I really like this block. I'm going to build one. I need a sanding block for sanding various radii and making additional shoes saves me from making individual blocks and having to buy self-stick sand paper; I can use standard sheets. Nice job! Awesome design!
Hi nicely made
